INTRODUCTION
Twelve point Times New Roman font should be used throughout the main text of your
paper. Double spaced, 1/2 indent. Chapter style used with appropriate header gives a 2 drop for
section first pages (i.e., the word INTRODUCTION appears two inches below the top of the
page). The text should be either left-justified with a ragged right edge, or justified throughout
(i.e., the text gets automatically evened out on both the left and the right margins).
1st Level Subheading (if necessary)
Some of your sections might require subsectionsfor example, if youre talking about
the life of Augustine in one section, you might want subsections for Early Life, The
Manichean Searcher, From Manichean to NeoPlatonist, and Conversion and Christian
Ministry or something like that. The space between the last line of the paragraph of the prior to
the subsection and the title of the subsection should be an additional line beyond the doublespacing. You can add or remove space using the Format / Paragraph option from the menu bar.

2nd Level Subheading (if necessary)

In rare cases you might need subsubsections. But probably not for papers of this length.1
Specific Examples of Form in Use
By the way, a paragraph should be longer than one sentence.

Footnotes should be formatted so they are single-spaced within each note, but with an extra space between
footnotes (see examples on the next page). Also, use 10 point font for footnotes, as opposed to the 12 point font you
use elsewhere in the paper.

If Your Heading is More Than 48

Characters Long, Split It Into Two Lines
Block Quotations
Quotations that are five or more lines in length should be set apart from the rest of the
text as a block quotation. The format of block quotations should be single space with the
entirety of the quotation indented four spaces (0.5") from the left margin. There should be
no quotation marks at the beginning or end of the citation. It is best to refrain from using
such a large amount of quoted material unless it is necessary to your paper. Quotations
less than eight lines may be formatted in this manner if it is desirable for emphasis of the
quotation.2
Footnotes
The format of footnotes should consist of the following information in the order given:
(1) authors name, (2) title and subtitle (if any), (3) name of editor, compiler or translator, if any,
(4) number or name of edition, if other than the first, (5) name of the series in which the book
appears, if any, with volume or number in the series, (6) facts of publication including place of
publication, publishing agency, date of publication, and (7) page number(s) of the specific
citation.3 If you have an odd resource that does not fit the criteria listed above, look up examples
online.
Margins
Margins for research papers should be one inch on all sides.4

Ibid., 146. [You may use Ibid., when you are citing the same source several times in a row.]

Turabian, A Manual, 245. This is an example of a short citation: since you have already cited this work,
you need not repeat all of the bibliographic information every time you cite ityou need only mention the authors
last name, A Short Form of the Title, followed by a page number.

Pagination
All pages of the main body of the paper must be numbered (i.e., all pages except for the
title page and the Works Cited page). Page numbers should be centered at the bottom of each
page.

[note the above formatting: hanging indent, single-spaced but with an extra space between
entries. You can format your paragraphs from the menu bar: Format / Paragraph. Also,
note that the citation format differs from footnotesfor example, here in the works cited
section, you list resources alphabetically by authors last name, the authors name is
written out in a different order, and the punctuation between parts of the citation is
different].
