1.05 DEFINITIONS A. adjustable: Accessible without major re-construction of the unit skylight to bring the parts of to a true or more effective relative position. air leakage: The flow of air which passes through closed and locked fenestration products. cellulosic composite: A composite whose ingredients include cellulosic elements in the form of, but are not limited to, distinct fibers, fiber bundles, particles, wafers, flakes, strands and veneers. These elements are often bonded together with naturally occurring or synthetic polymers. Also, additives such as wax or preservatives are often added to enhance performance. condensation: The deposition of moisture (liquid water or frost) on the surface of an object caused by warm moist air coming into contact with a colder object. deflection: Displacement due to flexure of a member under an applied load. design pressure (DP): The equivalent wind load pressure a product is rated to withstand to comply with design wind load. design wind load: The wind load pressure a product is required by the specifier to withstand in its end use application.

fenestration: Openings in the building envelope, such as windows, doors and unit skylights, designed to permit the passage of air, light, or people. frame: The enclosing structure of a unit skylight which fits into the wall or roof opening and receives either glass, sash or vents. negative pressure: Pressure acting in the outward direction. positive pressure: Pressure acting in the inward direction. reinforcement: Material added to individual sash, leaf, panel, or frame members to increase strength and/or stiffness. roof window: A roof window is a sloped application of a fenestration product that provides for in-reach operation. Roof windows used for emergency escape and rescue typically have a balanced sash or rotation of the sash to facilitate cleaning of the exterior surfaces from the interior of the building. This application often allows for rescue situations. rough opening: The opening in a roof into which a unit skylight, or rough buck is to be installed. sash: The portion of a unit skylight which includes the glass and framing sections which are directly attached to the glass. Normally, the moving segments of a window, although sash are sometimes fixed. screen: A product used with a unit skylight, consisting of a mesh of wire or plastic material used to keep out insects. For purposes of this Specification, screens are not for the purpose of providing security or to provide for the retention of objects or persons from the interior. skylight: See unit skylight. sloped glazing (other than unit skylights): A glass and framing assembly that is sloped more than 150 from the vertical and which forms essentially the entire roof of the structure. Generally this is a single slope construction. span: The clear distance measured parallel to the length of a mullion or divider between support points. structural test pressure (STP): The pressure differential applied to unit skylight. In this Specification, the STP shall be 150% of design pressure for windows and doors and 200% of design pressure for unit skylights. system: The parts, components, hardware and/or accessories that yield a complete, fully functional assembly. thermal barrier: An element made of material with relatively low thermal conductivity, which is inserted between two members having high thermal conductivity, in order to reduce the heat transfer. thermal expansion/contraction: Change in dimension of a material as a result of temperature change.

unit skylight: A complete factory assembled glass or plastic glazed fenestration unit consisting of no more than one panel of glass or plastic, installed in a sloped or horizontal orientation, in an out-of-reach application, which allows for natural daylighting. Unit skylights are either fixed (non-operable) or venting (operating). Unlike roof windows, unit skylights need not provide provisions for cleaning of exterior surfaces from the interior of the building. water penetration: Penetration of water beyond the vertical plane intersecting the innermost projection of the test specimen, not including interior trim and hardware, under the specified conditions of air pressure difference across the specimen. weatherstrip: A flexible component used to reduce air leakage or water penetration, or both, between sash, leaf, or panel and/or frame. weephole (weep): An opening that allows water to drain. wind load resistance: The ability of a window, door or unit skylight to resist the structural effects of differential pressure. Resistance is usually determined relative to a design pressure derived from the building codes. This Specification requires the wind load resistance to be measured at design pressure and also requires that the specimen be tested a second time at the uniform load structural test pressure.
