Living and Non-Living Things Lesson Plan

Grade Level: Grade 3 KPS Curriculum:


1. LIFE SCIENCE SC.03.7 Students will compare and contrast the characteristics of living things. State Standards (5.3.1a, 5.3.1b) Students will understand the characteristics of living things Students will identify the characteristics of nonliving things. Students will classify living and nonliving things. Students will list the basic needs of a living organism.

Core Subject Correlation: Science

Objective(s): Student will learn and review the characteristics of living and non-living things. Then they will apply this information to help identify what objects are living and non-living things. Students will be able to list some characteristics that all living things have in common. Students will then be challanged to use their knowledge and provide new objects of living and non-living. Lesson Sequence: 1. The teacher will begin the lesson by letting students give examples of living and non-

living thing.
2. 3. 4. 5. Enter lecture by reviewing why things are considered living and non-living. Video trivia game. Jigsaw puzzle.

Visual flaschcards of living and non-living things will be given to the students for more independent practice. Students will sort visuals into living and non-living categories so they have a better understanding in what category each items belongs too. 6. As a class we will create a t-chart and discuss the reason why each visual belongs in either the living or non-living category. 7. Then the class will split-up in two teams and each student will have a chance to write a correct living and non-living thing on the cholkboard.
Alternative Accommodations: Student will have as much time as they need. Teacher will roam the room and help students as needed. Struggling learners will share thoughts and work with a partner to sort out the visual cards. With help from the teacher these students will create a list of living and non living things that they can use in order to write on the chalkboard during the team game challenge.
