AGITATOR INSPECTION DECISION TREE

Test 1: External Visual Query-Was the agitator exposed to damaging heat? Determine maximum temperature and location.

Activity- Inspect mounting brackets, hardware, nozzles and piping for signs of discoloration, cracking, corrosion and dimensional distortion.

Test 2: Instruments & Electrical Query- Was wiring and electronics exposed to damaging heat? Was there enough heat to damage

Activity- Inspect local gages, electronic transmitters, control valves and wiring within 3 meters of the equipment for signs of corrosion, burns and melting.

Any damage?

No

Yes

Test 3: Motor Checks Query-Was the motor exposed to damaging heat?

Activity- Perform Motor Inspection

Test 4: Shaft Rotation Query-Was the shaft distorted? Are the bearings and / or seals damaged, preventing the rotor from turning freely?

Activity-Does the rotor resist turning freely with a reasonable amount of effort?

Test 5: Bracket Hardness Query-Have the chemical or physical properties of the main support bracket been altered by excessive heat?

Activity- Perform hardness test on the bracket. Take a replication for possible metallurgical analysis.

Test 6: Lube System QueryIf the agitator has a lubrication system, were components damaged or destroyed?

Activity- Inspect oil pumps, resevoirs, tubing and other components for signs of corrosion, burns and melting.

Test 7: Coupling Query-Was the coupling damaged by heat? Are spacers and flexible members damaged by heat?

Activity- Inspect coupling, guards and bolting for discoloration and distortion?

Test 8: Bearings QueryWere bearings damaged by heat?

Activity- Inspect bearings and oil slingers for signs of distortion and / or discoloration. Check o-rings and gaskets.

Test 9: Shaft Seals Query-Were seals damaged by heat?

Activity- Inspect seals and glands for signs of distortion and / or discoloration. Check o-rings and gaskets.

Any Damage?

No

Test 10: Seal System Query-If the agitator has a seal system, were components damaged or destroyed?

Yes
Activity- Inspect seal pots, tubing and other components for signs of corrosion, burns and melting.

No Any Damage?

Test 11: Internal Query- Has the agitator been damaged internally? Is the shaft bent? Which parts are salvagable?

Yes
Activity- Repair or replace auxiliary system components as required.

NOTECommence no repairs until repair scope of work has been identified and documented.

Activity- Remove rotating assembly from the reactor , vessel or tank. Inspect rotating element, baffles, associated internals and bolts for signs of discoloration, warping, rubbing or cracking. Check the hardness of rotating elements. Inspect the glass lining for cracks, and the metal parts for corrosion.

Activity- Repair or replace any damaged parts
