What if something will be different, what if something will be new?" Rabbi Edwin Friedman
A Challenging Time
It is a challenging time for many in our community, seniors, teens and especially young families: Nearly 70% of the children at nearby Crownhill Elementary School are on free or reduced lunch Both parents working leaves little time left over for help with homework The family meal is disappearing from the demands of work, school, clubs and outside activities In a technology age many older adults are feeling increasingly isolated even as online communities abound Real conversations about Faith and God are trumped by the daily headlines and the constant pull of our media
A Time to Love
"The one who blesses others is abundantly blessed...."Proverbs 11:25
We seek to embody the inclusive love of God in Christ through worship, intentional faith development, community, radical hospitality, outreach/mission and extravagant giving. BUMC is poised to grow in service to its community, neighborhood children and their families and partnering organizations. We want to: Mentor youth to meet their educational and spiritual needs Support families with outreach programs and congregational opportunities for spiritual growth Meet the needs of the hungry and hurting around us Have challenging conversations about life and society from a position of faith Be a community that is an inclusive place for all to worship Give extravagantly of our time, resources and talents to serve God and our world
"For I am convinced that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor rulers, nor things present, nor things to come, nor powers, nor height, nor depth, nor anything else in all creation will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord. Romans 8: 38-39
Three people in this past year have joined the church after attending a Celebration of Life service for a loved one. They expressed feeling welcomed, nurtured and loved in worship like they've never felt before. Being in our worship space, and in the presence of the holy that was presented to them by the music and by the pastor's words were the personal touches that honored their loved ones life. They wanted that feeling to continue.
A special needs man of about 40 years-old was so excited to be asked to serve communion one Sunday. He shared with his mentor from Kitsap Applied Technologies, that his church and his work for Boeing, are his life supports that get him through each and every day.
A 4th grader from tutoring class noticed the baptismal candles in the office and asked what they were for. After a brief explanation she replied "I would like to know that mysterious God."
A Time to Grow
An entrance to a building says, "This is the way to enter into God's house." This is where you find hospitality and community.
We vision a time to grow a space that will gather people in community, expand our capacity to serve neighborhood children and their families, connect people to each other and God. We vision to create a space for larger community engagement through the arts and partnership with other social service non-profits. This structural renovation will allow: * * * * * * A place to serve all of Bremerton as a beacon for conversations of social justice and compassion for the homeless and marginalized A new welcoming reception center where people can gather in community before entering worship Greater connection with people through facilities for larger community gatherings, arts programs and services for children Connection with community members of all abilities through improved parking access, slope grading, modern, accessible bathrooms and safer walkways and spaces for children and older adults Better service to community children and the needy with a modern and efficient kitchen with updated safety features Improved audio-visual and communications systems for the sanctuary

Each summer the Music and Arts summer choir goes to the Willows and to Canterbury Older Adult Living Centers. This choir had 24 youth this last year! While warming up the choir at the Willows a long time church member sitting was at a table in the back with his two daughters. They shared that their mother, their fathers dear wife, died that morning. Having lunch together they were so excited to hear the choir sing. One of the songs during the performance was a solo by Hailee Thompson, from the school musical, Music Man. She played the part of Marion the Librarian and sang, "Good Night my Someone Goodnight." This family was so moved by her song, they wanted to meet her to share that their mothers name was Marion, and that she had just died a few hours before. During prayer with the family the realization that God used this young womans voice and her music as a healing salve touched all in an amazing way.
