Maryn Observed February 20th- February 25th Mathematics Counting and Quantity On February 20th, Maryn was rated

at a level 5 for counting and quantity. Maryn was able to count easily from 1-19. After 19, Maryn said, I dont know any more. She is not able to count any higher at this point in time. On February 20th, Maryn was asked, Which is more, 2 or 5? She answered 5. Then, she was asked if 19 or 15 were less. Maryn said, 19, no wait, 15. Next, Maryn pulled out 10 markers from the art shelf and counted them as she pulled them out. Below, you can see Maryn writing her numbers on February 20th. Many of Maryns letters were formed in the wrong direction. She wrote up to 10, with her only question being, How do you write 9? As she was writing her numbers, she had to count through her numbers as she wrote to remember what came next. Maryn understands the concepts all, none, some, most and least. She is able to use these is sentences, such as, all of my blankets are over here and most of the children are in the room.

Computation Maryn is a 4 for computation. On February 20th, Maryn had 10 markers infront of her. Then, she was asked to make the amount of markers smaller and she took away 2 markers. Next, she was asked to make the amount of markers larger and she added 1 marker. On February 20th, Maryn was able to describe addition situations for numbers less than 5. She was asked, If we have 5 markers and took away 2, how many would we have left. By observing the markers, she was able to answer, 3. After additional examples of addition and subtraction, she answered them all correctly. However, she is unable to answer subtraction and addition questions above 10. In the picture below, a circle was drawn for Maryn. Then, she was asked if a line was drawn through the middle and one side was taken away, how much would be left. She answered, half, so is familiar with the terms half and whole. Also, on February 25th, I put 10 blocks in front of Maryn and asked her to divide them into two. She was able to remove five from the group.

Time On February 20th, Maryn was rated between a 4-5. She is able to sequence events. When asked what happens first and last and school, she said, First we play in the back two rooms and last we get picked up. Maryn was unable to tell what January and February are and what Monday and Tuesday are called. However, during naptime, Maryn asked, How much longer of nap? 5 minutes? When the response was. 15 minutes, she said, Is that long? She is familiar and uses the terms minutes and hours, but does not yet understand the flow of time and how long each truly means. Also, Maryn understands today, tomorrow, and yesterday. Maryn frequently tells lead teachers what she did yesterday and asks what they are doing today. Location Maryn is a 5 for location. Maryn is familiar with her surroundings and is able to direct teachers and other students to various things around the room. On February 20th, Maryn was asked where the Kleenex box was. She said, It is by the blocks. It is above the blocks and near the window. She is familiar with these prepositions and uses the frequently. Also, Maryn is able to compare and support items in the classroom. Length, Capacity, Weight, and Temperature Maryn was rated as a 4 for length, capacity, weight, and temperature. Maryn was able to tell which line below was the longest and which was the shortest. She used a ruler to measure of the length. Next, Maryn is able to tell which items in the classroom are heavier than others. She compared the different size blocks to tell which ones weighed the most. Also, two cups were filed with different amounts of water and Maryn was able to distinguish which cup held more water. Next, Maryn was able to use the thermometer in the refrigerator. She read the number in degrees, but asked, what are degrees? Finally, on February 20th, Maryn weighed the rocks in the science room and was able to tell by the scale which rocks weighed more.

Sorting and Classifying Objects On February 20th, Maryn was rated a 5. Maryn was given a large box of foam blocks and was asked to sort them. Initially, Maryn said, How do you want me to sort them? By color, by shape, by size? Then, she was able to group all of the items by their shape. Next, she sorted the items by their size. She was able to group and give reasoning for why she chose each type. The morning of February 25th, Maryn put the dominos in a color patter (red, blue, yellow). Then, she put them in another line (red, blue, yellow, black, blue).
