What percent is represented by the whole collection of rings? What percent of the collection does each ring represent? How did you arrive at that conclusion? Lexies grandma buys her another ring for her birthday. What will be the percent increase of her ring collection? How did you come to that conclusion? Exercise 1 Ryan increased his trading card collection by 5 cards. He originally had 15 cards. What is the percent increase? Suppose instead of increasing the collection by 5 cards he increased it by 1 card. Would his percent increase be the same as Lexies when she increased by 1 ring? Why or why not? Explain. Based on you answer, how is displaying change as a percent useful? Pass out cards. Example 2 A waiter says he is taking 10% off your bill because of a mistake with your order. Write down what you think this statement implies. Collect cards I pay 90% of my bill 10% will be subtracted

Lets look at these statements as equations. 90%*total total-10%*total These equations are equivelant. Why? Example 2 Ms. Bennett said she is going to reduce the number of calories she eats in a day. Her trainer tells her to start slow and reduce her number of calories by no more than 7%. She estimated she consumed 2,200 calories instead of her usual 2,500 calories. Did she reduce her calorie intake by less than 7%?

How did you show this? Exercise 2 shoulder partner The value of Trinitys checking account decreased by 10% in January. The original amount was $450. 00. What is the current value? How did you do this? If it decreases by 10% again in February, will her new value be $360.00? Why or why not? Example 3 Wyatt has earned 8 merit badges. He wants to earn 2 more badges so he will have a total of 10 merit badges. If Wyatt completes the additional 2 merit badges, what will be the percent increase in badges? Express the 10 badges as a percent of 8 badges. Does 100% plus your answer from part (a) equal your answer in part (b)? Why or why not?
