INTERTANKO builds on IMO process with policy statement on GHG emissions from shippin

Executive summary
INTERTANKO!s policy on Greenhouse Gas "GHG# emission reductions from ships$ as appro%ed by the Association!s &ouncil$ has been written into a comprehensi%e policy statement that will be used by us as we represent our Members in upcomin international fora discussin GHG emission reductions' This policy will be re%iewed and updated$ as necessary$ based on de%elopments in these international fora' (e belie%e that the IMO is the appropriate body to re ulate GHG emissions from ships and fully support the IMO process to de%elop real and sustainable GHG emission reduction re ulations from ships that will not hinder international commerce' In addition$ we stron ly support the principle that GHG re ulations should be ship)fla neutral' INTERTANKO ad%ocates measures that would result in tan ible &O * and other GHG emissions reductions from tan+ers in a positi%e$ proacti%e manner' (e reco nise the importance of wor+in with other sta+eholders to ensure the ma,imum efficiency of both new ships and e,istin ships' To this end we are wor+in with shipbuilders and others on the desi n and construction of new ships$ and with other partners in the transportation chain on the utilisation of ships in ser%ice' (e belie%e that short and lon term tar et le%els for GHG emission reductions from ships should be ambitious but realistic$ and pro%ide incenti%es for sustainably achie%in them' (e will analyse Mar+et -ased Instruments "M-I# a ainst the Association adopted principles and will report the results of its e%aluation as soon as the details of concrete proposals become a%ailable'

Climate Change INTERTANKO a rees that each industry sector$ includin transportation$ should stri%e to deli%er a si nificant contribution by reducin its Greenhouse Gas "GHG# emissions$ particularly &O* emissions' Greenhouse Gas Emissions from hipping INTERTANKO ad%ocates measures that would result in &O * and other GHG emissions reductions from tan+ers' .ome measures$ such as ship operations$ are under the direct control and thus the responsibility of tan+er operators' Howe%er$ some other measures$ such as impro%ed ship desi n$ impro%ed technolo ies and impro%ed lo istics can only be obtained throu h a close and coordinated cooperation with other sta+eholders and with o%ernments'

GHG obli ations on the basis of a %essel!s fla would fail to ma+e a meanin ful en%ironmental impro%ement' "easures for G#G emission re!uctions INTERTANKO supports the adoption of the Ener y Efficiency 2esi n Inde, "EE2I# as soon as possible' INTERTANKO also encoura es the IMO to use the EE2I formulae for an early establishment of tar et le%els for &O * emission reductions for new ships' INTERTANKO supports the adoption of .hip Ener y Efficiency Mana ement 3lan ".EEM3# by the IMO' INTERTANKO members routinely apply operational measures aimed at impro%in ships! fuel efficiency' INTERTANKO has de%eloped a .EEM3 model specifically for tan+ers which is bein made a%ailable to our Members' The uide for tan+ers facilitates a harmonised and comprehensi%e recordin $ monitorin and reportin of the results' It also pro%ides further uidance on the usa e of the Ener y Efficiency Operational Indicator "EEOI#' INTERTANKO is acti%ely in%ol%ed in de%elopin best industry practice to ether with other sta+eholders$ particularly charterers$ for a better plannin of the %oya e with the %iew of reducin &O* emissions' "ar$et%&ase!
