Key factors in managing your studies

Attend all lectures and tutorials to keep up-to-date with course and assignment information. Prepare for classes by completing prescribed readings and activities. Note any questions to ask the teacher. Remember, once you get behind, it is hard to catch up. For every 1 hour of class time, you need to spend at least 1 hour for reading, completing assignments and exam preparation. Take notes (in class and when reading) and write down any areas you dont understand and any questions you have. Reread your notes and test your knowledge regularly to help you prepare for exams and assignments. Start to prepare for your assignments and exams from Week 1, so you are not overwhelmed later: o Read your Course Profiles and course Moodle sites; o Record and highlight due dates for your assignments and exam dates in a diary and on a wall planner; o Plan what you will need to do to start and complete your assignments. For example, if Assignment 1 requires you to write a report and reference two journal articles, you should plan for this by immediately finding out about reports, referencing and researching; o Visit the Learning Skills Unit (Metro Campus) or Academic Learning Centre (Regional Campus) to make appointments for each assessment task. Convert the information into the easiest format for you to understand. For example, if you are a visual learner create a mind map. Form a study group. Take breaks in your study. Take a 5-10 minute break after 40-50 minutes of studying. Sleep and diet are also important.

Using a time planner

A planner will help you to organise the hours of your day so that you can balance all the activities you need to do. You should firstly record all lectures, tutorials, work and other commitments. Then you should look at what times are free and schedule the best times for study and leisure. Remember: it is important to make this planner realistic, so that it works for you. It is important to schedule leisure and free-time in your timetable. Once you have a plan, stick to it!
