The font used for the title of evil dead ibold with serif details on the ends of the letters. Serif fonts date back to the romans and they came about because the used to carve letters into stone and the little flick at the ends where a natural side effect of the way the chisel moved through the rock. Therefore serif fonts are naturally associated with the past and will therefore work well with a film thats plotline focuses on possession which can be considered archaic.
The words themselves are written in bold capital letters which make the writing stand out. Capital letters are sometimes used in books when a character is shouting and that association between capital letters and shouting is something that most people are aware of and use when their writing angry emails. By using capital letters for the words Evil DEAD it makes it seem as though the words are being shouted at you. The words are written on t black background which has connotations of death and mystery whereas the writing is in red which suggsts violence. The writing also has decorative feature in the form of the black tree branches The tree branches suggest that there will be some sort of forest in the film which is an archetypal feature of Horror movies. The way the branches cross over each other is reminiscent of the crosshatching on a wooden trap or cage this could suggest that one of the characters is captured in the woods. The colour used for the branches is black instead of a more natural dark brown this could be because the colour black represents death and evil and therefore communicates to the audience that the woods in this film are not natural or good but that they are a place filled with evil.
Skyfall Title
The S in Skyfall is unusually shaped withe the bottom hall being wider than the top. This imbalance in the shape of the lettering is significant because it is a noticeable feature in the typeface and therefore must serve a purpose. In this case the imbalance in the shaping of the letter could be a representation of the imbalance of power between the good and bad that is a key feature in Bond films. The typeface is sans serif which is a style of writing that appeared 1n the 19th century which makes it much younger than serif fonts which date back to Ancient Rome. The significance of using a sans serif font is that it communicates to the audience that the film is more modern which is true in the case of Skyfall because like most bond films it is filled with Gadgets and high speed chases. Due to the bold sans serif typeface the ends of the letters appear to be blunt could suggest that the film focuses on quite serious topics. In the Opening Credits the font is white. The colour white has connotations of innocence, good ,and heaven. This could be a representation of James bond's character. However In specific areas of the font there are dark gray patches. The colour gray is commonly associated with moral ambiguity and this could suggest that characters that would typically be considered good may make the wrong choice.
Typeface One
The first font that we considered was Crime Times Six. The
font has a messy and slightly unstructured quality which is perfect for our film because it reflects the thoughtless planning of the two girls. All of the letters in the font have slight patches of white in the and uneven edges this gives the effect that the letters have been painted on very quickly. If we decide to use this font it will be in red with a black background. The colour change in conjunction with the painted on effect will be reminiscent of the marking on the homes of plague victims in 13th century England. This is significant because the film has a supernatural element to it and therefor it would be suitable to use a font the evokes feeling of a more suspicious time in which people believed in witches and demons. Some of the letters such a the S, T and X have at least one Sharply pointed edges. This suggest that the film will contain violee. alternatively could symbolise how dangerous the bag is .
Typeface Two
The second font that I considered was True Lies. This font much like the first one has a painted on effect, however the letters are longer and have cleaner edges which modernises it in comparison to the 13th century plague marker style in typeface one. This could make it more suitable because the painted style is still present which when done in red will suggest violence and evil, but the more modern shape of the letters could be better for a film set in inner city London. The The lines on some of the letters such as the L, T and E are very long which creates the effect of the words being painted on in a rush. This would work to our advantage as our film has a fast paced chase scene and the hasty way in which the title appears to have been written reflect that sense of urgency that is present in our film.
Typeface Three
Typeface three also has a painted on effect however it is messier that the first two this can be seen in the paint splatter within the U your and the the way in which there seems to be ink dripping off of the F. This could be unsuitable for our film because the messy painted on style and the splatters of ik would look like blood splatter when written in our chosen colour of red. This could look too gruesome and would probably better suited to a horror film Furthermore The R and The Lines on The E are short which makes the letters look stubby and almost as though they were written by a child . This make the Third typeface a bad choice for Our film because it does not communicate the haste that is present in the chase scene or the tension between the characters
Final Choice
After everybody In our group presented Their font Ideas we chose Crime Times Six because we felt as though its archaic plague marker style and the elongated Line on the T were effective ways of communicating the supernatural element and also hinting at the sense of urgency that is created by the chase scene in our opening sequence.
