(Okra) fruit extract on Alloxan-induced hyperglycemic male albino Mus musculus (mice). Abstract Objective: This study determined the effect of 100% Abelmoschus esculentus (Linn.) (Okra) fruit extract on Alloxan-induced hyperglycemic male albino Mus musculus (mice). Design: Experimental design. Locale: The study was conducted in Tuliao's resident at Bahak, Liloan, Cebu. Subjects: Thirty-three male albino mice, weighing 25-27 grams, approximately 11-13 weeks old, selected by purposive sampling and were randomly allocated through fish bowl method to the experimental, positive, and negative control groups. Procedure: After 7-days' acclimatization, the mice were made to fast for 12 hours, after which, the initial fasting blood glucose levels were determined. Alloxan was then administered orally

with a dosage of 1.69 mg in 0.338 ml distilled water. Six hours after the administration of Alloxan, baseline blood glucose levels were determined to see if hyperglycemic state was achieved, after which oral treatments for each group were started. The experimental group were treated with 1 ml 100% okra fruit extract; the positive group with Gliclazide with a dosage of 0.27 mg per 26 gm mouse body in 1 ml distilled water; and the negative group with 1 ml distilled water. After the respective treatments, blood glucose levels were determined at 3, 6, 9, 12, 15 hours. Results: Mean initial fasting blood glucose level in the experimental group was 99.27 mg/dl 4.82, in the positive group 98.9 mg/dl 5.49, in the negative group 99.45 mg/dl 3.78. The mean baseline blood glucose levels for the three groups were 147.36 mg/dl 11.32, 148.82 mg/dl 10.92, 148.36 mg/dl 10.98 for the positive control group, negative control group and experimental group, respectively. After the treatmen of each group, the blood glucose values obtained are the following: on the 3rd hour, the results are 103.92 mg/dl 10.28, 161.09 mg/dl 11.55, and 130.36 mg/dl 20.62 for the positive control group, negative control groups, and experimental groups, respectively On the 6th hour, the results are 107.77 mg/dl 11.54, 166.55 mg/dl 19.08, and 113.73 mg/dl 23.52; on the 9th hour, the results are 119.64 mg/dl 16.97, 190.09 mg/dl 16.26, and 120.27 mg/dl 23.261; on the 12th hour, the results are 123.00 mg/dl 14.65, 197.09 mg/dl 18.43, and 127.45 mg/dl 20.86; and finally on the 15th hour, the results are 126.64 mg/dl 12.82, 149.36 mg/dl 11.76, and 127.36 mg/dl 24.94. Paired t-test showed that the blood glucose levels obtained after the treatment of different groups significantly from the baseline blood glucose levels at each time intervals. ANOVA showed a significant difference in the mean change of the blood glucose levels among the different groups at specified time interval after the treatment. Duncan's Multi-Range test showed a significant difference in the mean change in the blood glucose levels between the Experimental and Negative Control Group, whereas there was no significant difference between the Experimental and Positive Control Group at all the specified time intervals. Conclusion: This study was able to establish the comparable effect of 100% okra extract to the positive control hypoglycemic agent Gliclazide. Thus, in conclusion, the 100% okra fruit extract had a significant lowering effect on the blood glucose levels of alloxan-induced hyperglycemic male mice.
