Strategies for Active Learning / Procedures: Students will be introduced to the assignment and asked to complete the attached project, which entails them working collaboratively and individually to produce a class newscast. The project includes a daily breakdown of components students should complete each day. In addition, students must keep a daily journal (on a chart they will be given) that requires them to log everything they have accomplished each day in detail. The content of each video will vary from sports, news, weather, entertainment, breaking news, etc. (roles listed for students to sign up for on the project handout). Students will work as a class to plan the newscast, individually to complete their sections, and collaboratively to pull
them together in a single newscast. The newscast will be shown on the last day. Project details, assignments, rubrics, schedule, etc. are listed below. Materials Needed: Project Sheets; Daily Record Sheets; Video Cameras; Editing Software; Computers; Internet; Projector; Props students may want. Assessment: Students will receive a project grade based upon their final product and the rubric outlined below. In addition, daily grades will be taken based upon students completion of each step listed on the project sheet and their journaling on their daily record sheets. I will informally assess students work and learning by actively working with the class to create the newscast and through their daily record sheets. Formal assessment will take place through the final newscast by using the attached rubric. Reflections: This project went phenomenal, and students had an absolute blast completing it. I have never seen a funnier newscast! There were very serious moments in the newscast as students reported on issues, such as the new healthcare law. However, there were also very funny segments, such as one reporters abduction by an escaped gorilla. Students worked very hard on this project and had an enjoyable experience. In addition, they also learned many skills - mainly how to use a green screen for filming and editing. Students were also able to continue improving their video producing and editing skills. There is no doubt this was a great project and certainly one I plan to use when I begin teaching. Due to an incredible amount of snow days, canceled classes, and delays, the project spanned several days. However, it was definitely worth it!
