Science 10 Cell Model Assignment

Outcomes
Knowledge: C20 Describe the function of cell organelles and structures in a cell, in terms of life processes, and use models to explain these processes and their applications C23 Describe the cell as a functioning open system that acquires nutrients, excretes waste, and exchanges matter and energy C24 Identify the structure and describe, in general terms, the function of the cell membrane, nucleus, lysosome, vacuole, mitochondrion, endoplasmic reticulum, Golgi apparatus, ribosomes, chloroplast and cell wall, where present, of plant and animal cells
Skills:

Communication and Teamwork: Work as members of a team in addressing problems, and apply the skills and conventions of science in communicating information and ideas and in assessing results Select and use appropriate numeric, symbolic, graphical and linguistic modes of representation to communicate ideas, plans and results Communicate questions, ideas and intentions; and receive, interpret, understand, support and respond to the ideas of others What is your role? You have been asked by a local Grade 4 teacher to come into their class and explain the function of an animal cell to their students. However, Grade 4 students are not familiar with the names of the organelles and the processes that occur within the cell. Therefore, you have decided the best way to explain the inner workings of a cell is to relate these functions to the functions that are performed in a community (making energy, getting rid of waste etc.) You are, also, aware that these grade 4 students love a good pizza party. Therefore, you are to construct a model that represents an animal out of pizza using different toppings to explain the organelles. The Assignment It is your assignment to build a pizza cell model of an animal cell using your choice of toppings. This means you may use normal pizza toppings or bizarre ones. However, the items that you choose to use in your cell must have a purpose. This means that you cannot make a mitochondrion out of clay to be the mitochondrion in your model. You have to have a reason for representing the organelle the way you did, other than because it looked like it. You must think about the function of the cell organelle and relate it to the function of your choice of topping.

However, I do realize that this is difficult so you may use the reasoning because it looked like it three times in your model so use them wisely. You must provide a rationale of why you chose the objects that you did. In your rationale, you need to describe the function that the organelle performs in the cell and describe what function is performed in a community that is similar to this organelles function. Your model cannot be larger than the pizza dough provided. A legend must be included so that someone looking at the model knows what the Cocoa Puff represents in the cell. You will be working in groups of 3 for this assignment. Final Gallery Walk On the day that the model is due, we will construct the pizza cell models and set up a gallery walk so that everyone in the class will have a chance to see what students came up with for their model. We will then bake the pizzas (at this point you may remove any toppings you do not want to bake on your pizza) and EAT them!

GOOD LUCK!

This is to be displayed beside each pizza cell model during gallery walk.

Rationale Checklist
For all the organelles in your model: ______ Describe the function of the organelle ______ Describe why you represented the organelle the way you did in your model: REMINDER: you may only use because it looked like it for three of the organelles _______ Relate the function of the organelle to a function performed in a community

Model Checklist
Your model should: _____ Contain all organelles _____ Include a legend that is displayed during final gallery walk _____ Accompanied by a rationale (handed in on the final gallery walk day)
