Ecos Organic Paints offer a completely solvent free range of decorative finishes with performance characteristics similar to solvent based paints. They are designed specifically to protect the health of the user and to protect the environment whilst maintaining the highest technical and decorative qualities. Rooms painted with Ecos are safe to live in, play in and sleep in and can be put back into use straight away with no cause for concern as the paints are pollutant and odour free. Please see page 51 for ordering and carriage charges. If you are ordering a large amount of paint, we suggest you order cautiously as paint may not be returned. Coverage will always depend upon porosity.

Ecos colour chart and sample pots

Due to the printing process actual paints may not exactly match the colours shown. We recommend the hand painted colour chart as it shows the true colours including a range of neutrals not shown on the colour chart opposite. Colour sample pots in Matt emulsion and sample pots for allergy testing in White Emulsion, Gloss, Eggshell, Clear Varnish and Plaster Sealer are 2.50 incl p/p. The Heritage and Tropics colours, especially the Acid Yellow, Tango and Lime Green will only be true if painted on top of a white coat.

Plaster sealer
For sealing new interior plaster prior to painting or wallpapering. This colourless, water based acrylic solution hardens and binds to the plaster structure. Ensure adequate ventilation to allow thorough drying. 5 litres should cover 30-70 sq m.

Atmosphere purifying paint

One top coat on walls absorbs and neutralises pollutants permanently
The special silicate ingredients in Ecos Atmosphere Purifying Paint absorbs and neutralises these pollutants permanently. The efficacy of the paint is not exhausted within the average redecorating schedules of approximately 5 years. It absorbs 98 - 99% of volatile pollutants down to approximately one part per million (gas chromatographic data). It does not clean the air of airborne particles such as dust, pollen, animal dander and moulds. For base coats use Ecos Matt Emulsion and cover with a top coat of the purifying paint. It is available in matt only in all colours. Coverage is approximately 60 sq m per 5 litres.

Matt or soft sheen wallpaint

These paints are touch dry within 1 hr, re-coatable in 2 hrs and fully hardened within 24 hrs. Excellent brush and roller application. Coverage is 13-14 sq m per litre on hard non porous surfaces. No special ventilation is required. Can be wiped with a damp cloth. Please state finish - matt or soft sheen.

Eggshell
For interior walls and ceilings, especially kitchens, bathrooms and other areas where steam and condensation are a problem. Not ideal for use on lining paper. Eggshell is water resistant and gives a fully washable low sheen finish. Best results are normally achieved with two coats. 5 litres cover approximately 50 sq m on hard surfaces.

MDF passivating primer

Just one coat absorbs and neutralises formaldehyde and VOCs in MDF and plywood
For MDF and plywood, this paint contains a special silicate which neutralises formaldehyde and other VOCs. It is made to adhere to wood surfaces and needs only one application. Apply to bare MDF or plywood. The primer absorbs formaldehyde vapours and other VOCs from MDF and plywood down to approximately one part per million. Make sure that all bare surfaces are covered. Coverage is approximately 13 sq m per litre. Slight discolouration of this white paint may occur with some grades of MDF but this does not affect its performance. The Primer can be covered with a top coat of Ecos gloss, satin gloss or Feng shui.

2 Undercoat
For use on interior and exterior primed woodwork and bare metals including iron and steel but not copper or brass. Coverage is approximately 12 sq m per litre. Cover with Ecos gloss or satin gloss.

3 Gloss and satin gloss interior/exterior

For use on interior and exterior woodwork and primed or previously painted metal. Ecos gloss will key to most finishes but a test area is advisable. On bare wood use the three tier system. On previously painted wood, bare iron or steel, prepare with Ecos undercoat. For knots treat with Shellac Knotting and for filler, treat with Ecos Filler Sealer. Coverage is approximately 10 sq m per litre on hard, non-porous surfaces. The satin gloss is slightly less shiny than the gloss. Please state gloss or satin gloss.

MDF passivating primer I am very sensitive to smells of all sorts so I was very apprehensive of having the new work surface installed in our kitchen as it is made of chipboard. We used the MDF passivating primer on the underside of all the work surfaces and we now get no smell from it at all. We find this a very useful product. A.P.M. Herts

Feng shui harmonising finish
Ecos Feng Shui is a multi-surface coating for walls and woodwork, giving a washable, smooth shell-like surface which suffuses light gently, further enhancing the effect. It gives a low sheen, washable finish and is for interior use on walls, ceilings and woodwork, including doors, skirting boards, window frames, kitchen units, bathrooms etc. but is not ideal for floors, tiles, work surfaces or for use on lining paper. Optimum hardness achieved after 10 days. Best results are usually achieved with two coats though three may be necessary on very dark colours. Coverage is approximately 65 sq m per 5 litres.

Radiator paint
This radiator paint is quick drying, non-yellowing and non-tacky when dry. It has minimal odour during application and is odour free in two hours. Gives off no fumes in use and is formaldehyde free. Use on all previously painted radiators. Not suitable for bare copper pipes. Best results with 1 - 2 coats. 1 litre covers approximately 10 sq m. Gloss or satin gloss.

Anti-formaldehyde radiator paint

Conventional central heating radiators can offgas large amounts of formaldehyde and can easily be the largest source of formaldehyde in the home. (Formaldehyde is a carcinogen and can cause birth defects.) This paint absorbs approximately 98-99% of formaldehyde down to 1ppm before it can offgas into your home or office environment. Available in matt white, this base coat is best finished with Ecos Feng Shui if a coloured coat is required. For bare metal, prime with Ecos undercoat. For bare cast iron or blast cleaned metal, please phone for advice. Use on all previously painted radiators. 1 litre covers approx. 10 sq m.

Why use titanium dioxide instead of natural alternatives? It is safe - safe enough to eat. Natural opacifiers are relatively poor quality and often need four or five coats of paint to cover properly. Why not use natural binders and resins rather than synthetic ones? Some are animal products (bone, hide) Others take days to dry (oil based) Others (resins) need solvents to function In short - there are no alternatives. Why not use natural pigments/earth colours? Some are highly toxic (Vermillion) Others are limited to subdued shades - browns, reds, yellows, black etc. Why is solvent-free important? Many paints including matt and silk paints contain solvent which are positively harmful and cause Sick Building Syndrome, Danish Painters Syndrome, asthma, allergies and chemical sensitivities.

Clear interior varnish waterproof
For use on all interior woodwork including floors. Not suitable for teak or similar oily woods. Wood must be clean and oil and wax free. Best results normally achieved with 2 or 3 coats. Coverage is 10 sq m / 1 litre. Available in gloss, satin or matt.

Filler sealer
This is not a filler but is for sealing fillers such as Polyfilla prior to painting with Gloss, Eggshell or Feng Shui.

Ecostrip
The safer, more environmentally conscious stripper
This industrial strength paint and varnish stripper can be used on wood, metal and masonry. It removes modern varnishes and multiple layers in one application. It does not evaporate and stays active for over 24 hrs. It is more efficient than conventional paint stripper. Contains glycol esters and N-methyl-2-pyrrolidone which is biodegradable.

Floor paint

Natural wallpaper paste

Holzweg Wallpaper Paste can be used for hanging all types of wallpaper on absorbent surfaces including plaster, previously painted surfaces and lining paper. It is completely free of fungicides, preservatives and synthetic resin. It is supplied in powder form for mixing with cold water. Contents: pure methylcellulose. Non-toxic. Coverage on 100 gms of wallpaper paste is 16 - 30 sq m.

Stabilizing solution
Sealer/stabilizer for exterior and interior porous soft or crumbling concrete, masonry, brickwork, render etc. For use prior to painting. 5 litres will cover approximately 30 - 70 sq m.

Woodworm treatment
This is a natural based system for eliminating existing woodworm or rot infestation in any situation where the wood is not exposed to constant moisture and for ensuring effective future protection. It petrifies the timber making it inedible to boring insects and difficult for fungi to settle on its hard surface. It has been officially tested by the Institute of Building in Switzerland. 0.75 litre of Holzweg Timber Treatment fluid treats approximately 7.5 sq metres. It is a clear liquid which will slightly darken the timber. Two coats are required for maximum effectiveness. Coat with varnish after application. Non toxic and completely bio-degradable.
