Lenape takes win over Seneca, 4-1 Community
garden on
its way back
for season
By MIKE MONOSTRA
The Sun
With warmer weather and
longer days, the gardening season
has finally arrived in Mt. Laurel.
For the third straight year, the
township is bringing back its
community garden at Blue Hills
Farm on Hainesport-Mt. Laurel
Road.
The garden debuted at the
farm in 2012 thanks to the efforts
of community members and the
Mt. Laurel Green Team. The
township went forward with the
idea to allow residents who do not
have an adequate outdoor space
to still partake in gardening. The
project finally came to fruition
thanks in part to a Burlington
County Parks Grant.
After a positive response from
residents the first year, the town-
ship opted to double the number
of plots in 2013.
Last week, the township said
about two-thirds of the plots had
been filled so far. Township man-
ager Maureen Mitchell said re-
sponse from the community has
remained steady since the garden
opened.

Residents can rent a full,
half or quarter plot for a fee
Sandra Carleton, a member of
Mt. Laurels Green Team and a
gardener, rents a half plot from
the township each year. She en-
joyed growing vegetables and
herbs in the backyard of her
home until she moved to a town-
house and didnt have the space to
do it anymore.
Then I moved into a town-
house and I only had a small yard
in the back, Carleton said.
When the township announced
plans for a community garden,
Carleton was involved from the
start. The Green Team did a lot of
work to help get the garden
rolling, and Carleton was able to
start gardening again.
I decided I wanted to do a veg-
etable garden, she said. I had a
smaller piece and then I expand-
ed it.
Carleton said, from a garden-
ers perspective, the 2013 season
was very difficult. Bad weather
made growing anything difficult,
and Carleton hopes things will
turn around this year.
Despite last years struggles,
Carleton and other gardeners are
forging ahead with the season.
Last week, the Green Team had
master gardener Jen Johnson
come out for a demonstration.
Carleton said the demonstration
was well attended by the commu-
nity. In addition, there are two
rain gardens on site and a wild-
flower garden is being started
this year.
The Green Team is also hoping
to use the garden for the commu-
nitys benefit. In conjunction
with the New Jersey Tree Foun-
dation, Carleton said the team is
going to try to grow potted trees
for the townships proposed
park at the intersection of Haine-
sport-Mt. Laurel Road and Elbo
Lane.
Last year, we had trouble
growing the trees with the weath-
er, Carleton said. This year,
were trying potted trees. Hope-
fully well have good weather this
time.
Applications for the communi-
ty garden are available on the Mt.
Laurel Township website,
www.mountlaurel.com. Residents
can rent a full plot for $40, a half
plot for $20 or a quarter plot for
$10. All checks should be made
payable to Mt. Laurel Township.
The township will continue to
rent plots until all of them are
full.

munity Garden, contact the Parks

Municipal taxes down, open space tax up?
By MIKE MONOSTRA
The Sun
During the passage of Mt. Laurel Town-
ships preliminary municipal budget on
March 12, residents learned the average
homeowner was going to see a decrease of
$39.22 in their municipal tax bill.
However, the same decrease is not pres-
ent for the townships open space tax.
The current tax rate for open space is
0.08 cents per $100 of assessed value. Un-
like the municipal tax rate, the open space
tax rate does not change annually.
The open space tax was set by referen-
dum, and all of the combined referendum
equate to 8 cents per $100 of assessed
value, Township Manager Maureen
Mitchell said.
With last years revaluation boosting the
value of an average home in Mt. Laurel, a
spike in residents open space tax bills
could take place this year.
Last year, the average home in Mt. Lau-
rel was worth $142,200. After the revalua-
tion, the average home value increased to
$236,952. The increase would cause the
open space tax for the average homeowner
to go up $75.88.
If the tax rate remains at 8 cents, the
township will receive about $1.9 million in
additional revenue.
At a meeting in March, Councilman Jim
Keenan spoke up against keeping the tax
rate at 8 cents, saying council needed to
look at lowering the rate if possible.
However, council does not have the au-
thority to make changes to the open space
tax rate through a resolution, according to
Mitchell.
Since the rate was approved by the vot-
ers at a referendum, we have been advised
by our solicitor that it needs to be lowered
by a voter referendum, Mitchell said.
Right now, township officials are look-
ing at how much debt service the tax will
cover and whether there will be any excess
money. Mitchell said the numbers will be
reviewed before the township considers
adding an open space tax referendum to
the November election ballot.
The townships open space tax is sepa-

he old saying is that numbers
dont lie. Numbers are what
they are; interpret them how
you will.
Here are a few for you to ponder:
Five: How many of Atlantic Citys
11 casinos lost money on an operating
basis for the first nine months of the
fiscal year, through September
One: How many Atlantic City casi-
nos went out of business this year
the Atlantic Club plus one more
Revel which is up for sale following
bankruptcy
$10.3 million: The amount of rev-
enue from online wagering in New
Jersey in February, on pace for $123.6
million for the year, well short of Gov.
Christies original $1 billion forecast.
$12 million: The estimated tax rev-
enue from internet gambling through
the end of the fiscal year in June, com-
pared to the forecast of $160 million
$235 million: The amount of gam-
bling revenue brought in by AC casi-
nos last year, a 35 percent drop from
2012, a year that included a casino
shutdown due to Hurricane Sandy
39: The number of states that offer
casino gambling, compared to two in
1988
2 million: The number of visitors
Atlantic City bused in from surround-
ing areas last year, compared to 14 mil-
lion not long ago
The numbers dont lie not only is
Atlantic City failing, so is gambling
nationwide. Even in Las Vegas, the
gambling capital of the world, gam-
bling revenue was down to only $6.5
billion last year.
New casinos in that Nevada city are
focusing on other luxurious offerings
other than gambling, such as restau-
rants, nightclubs, pools, shopping,
spas and entertainment.
Over the last few years, Atlantic
City has begun to do the same with the
Tanger Outlets, The Pier Shops at Cae-
sars and the dining and nightlife at the
Borgata.
But is it enough? The numbers
would say that its not, or at the very
least, that more needs to be done to
make Atlantic City a bigger tourist
destination, serving more than just
the gambler.
Like it or not, Atlantic City is vital
for the states economy. Lucky for us, it
has easy access, beachfront property
and plenty of name recognition to
bounce back in a serious way.
in our opinion
Did the gamble on AC fail?
If so, then the state needs to find an alternative source of revenue fast
Your thoughts
Can Atlantic City rebound without
gambling? What are your ideas for how it
can become a tourist destination for more
than just gamblers? Share your thoughts
through a letter to the editor.

Township working on
walking, bike trails
rate from the municipal portion
of the tax bill. Money raised with
the open space tax is allocated
specifically for the purchase of
properties with the intent of
making them recreation areas,
parks and historical sites.

open space project is the parcel of
land at the intersection of Haine-
sport-Mt. Laurel Road and Elbo
Lane. The township is working on
transforming the vacant land into
a park complete with walking and
bike trails.
Mitchell said lowering the tax
rate could make the purchase of
other properties more difficult in
the future. She also said the town-
ship could have a tougher time
maintaining its current open
space properties if the tax rate is
reduced.
