OBSERVATION ONE FRIDAY, JANUARY 24, 2014 TIME: 8:00AM-8:45AM

NOTE: EVEN THOUGH THE MOVIE I AM OBSERVIING TAKES PALCE OVER AN ENTIRE DAY I WILL BE GIVING ACCOUNTS OF WHAT I AM OBSERVING IN REAL TIME AS I SEE IT HAPPENING. OBSERVATION SETTING: A GHETTO IN LOS ANGELES CALIFORNIA, MAINLY IN FRONT OF CRAIGS HOUSE ALTHOUGH GOING TO DIFFERENT PARTS OF THE NEIGHBORHOOD AT TIMES

Figured World- A place in which a few or many different discourse communities come together and co-exist.
The figured world that I am going to be observing is the movies Friday, Next Friday, and Friday After Next. These movies cover a man as he tries to navigate through life the best way he knows how. The purpose of this figured world is basically survival, doing whatever it is you have to do to make it to the end of the day. With multiple things going on constantly and the unknown of what could happen everyone must stay aware all the time. It has everything from drug dealing and shooting to parting and just relaxing with friends, a hectic place to some people but home to others. In this world just about anything goes; gambling, fighting, drinking, smoking anything you want as long as you are not caught by the wrong people; you can be as loud and seen or as quiet and sneaky as you want to be. People interact and communicate with other people here in many different ways it is up to the individual to determine if is acceptable or not and deal with it how they see fit. Depending on the individuals involved some things may be more acceptable than it would be with others. The only universal rule to follow is not disrespecting anyone that you are not going to want to have problems with other than that it is your own direction. The discourse communities I would expect from this world would be the smokers, the thugs, the cops, the elders and countless others.

Actors- a person made from and participating in the figured world Craig: Neighborhood resident. Main focus of the story. Recently fired from his job for allegedly stealing boxes. Craigs role is the clear headed friend who has your back through it all. Smokey: The best friend of Craig. Is the neighborhood weed dealer and pothead. He is certain that weed fixes everything, even his friends current jobless situation. His role is to live carefree and sell weed small time. Deebo: Neighborhood bully. Takes what he wants when he wants and feels as if he is untouchable. Deebos role is to intimidate everyone.

Debbie: Craigs love interest. Local beauty. She likes Craig but doesnt want to interfere with his relationship. Her role is the good Girl. The one that is different from the norm.

Artifact- Something significant used to mold a certain person into a certain way or used by them. It can be something physical, verbal, or otherwise. Weed: Is used throughout the movie as a way of dealing with your problems or relaxing. Reds Bike: Deebo stole this bike from Red and rides it everywhere he goes. The squeak from the gears lets people know when he is coming. Smokeys Name: Lets everyone know what he is about and what he does. The local weed man and smoker. Deebos Knife: Even though he is the biggest guy around he still has a knife as another means of intimidation. He uses it to break into places and will use it to harm if need be.

Discourse Communities- Are certain group of people who have a shared view and think and act along the same lines. Smokers: Smokey, Hector, and Craig: All these people smoke weed throughout the movie as a way of interacting and having fun or just relaxing. Advisors: Craig, Mr. Jones, Mrs. Jones: These people give some good and/or really deep advice sometime in the story. Delinquents: Deebo, Felisha, Big Worm, Ezal, Lil Chris: These actors all cause some type of mischief rater it was small like always asking to borrow something up to causing pain and trouble to others.

Literacy Practices- The ways of communication used by the actors such as talking, joking, body language, or anything to get what they want across. Deebos bullying: He will get in your face, yell at you, and hit you or whatever it takes for you to fear him. Like when he punches Red over his bike or gets in Smokeys face when he snatches Red chain and says What Chain. Joking: Used to get though a tough situation like when Smokey didnt have all of Big Worms money or when they are high and relaxing just for fun. Story Telling: Ways of putting something into perspective by talking of something in the past like while smoking weed Smokey tells Craig all types of stories from his life

My Observation: 8:00am Craig hears knocking at the door, he sees that it is Jehovah witnesses and slams the door in their face 8:02 Craig wakes his sister up asking her to fix him up with Debbie 8:05 Craig tries to fix himself a big bowl of cereal only to find that there is no milk for it. He attempts to throw it away until stopped by his dad and given a talk about wasting. 8:08 Craig finds his mom in the kitchen cooking up some good food only to find out she was only making it for herself. 8:10 Mr. Jones calls Craig in the bathroom to talk about him getting fired and him finding a new job 8:12 Craigs girlfriend calls with drama about her hearing he was with another female all while she had another man sleep in her bed 8:13 Smokey bust through Craigs window to wake him up and Craig talks junk and shows Smokey his new gun 8:14 Smokey sees Big Worm while waiting on Craig to get ready. Big Worm checks Smokey to make sure he is doing what he is supposed to be doing and not playing with his money 8:16 Craig tells Smokey the story of how he was fired from his job for stealing boxes 8:18 Smokey tells Craig that he is going to get him high for the first time today saying Its Friday, You aint got no job, you aint got shit to do 8:19 Smokey tells story of Deebo knocking Red out over taking his bike and Red and his father getting into their car and driving off fast 8:20 Mrs. Jones tells Craig his girlfriend keeps playing on the phone and she is tired of it 8:20 Smokey and Craig go to Smokeys house so he can smoke because Craigs mother is still home. Smokeys mom yells at him for banging on the door because he left his key at home. Then she makes him go to the store to get her some cigarettes but doesnt give him enough money but tells him to make it enough 8:23 Craig and Smokey see Ezal at the store and he has Smokey buy him a beer in exchange for him washing Smokeys car later 8:25 Craig and Smokey see Mrs. Parker watering the lawn in skimpy clothing while they are walking back to Craigs house 8:26 Craigs mom leaves to go to work

8:27 Smokey has Craig get him something so that he can roll a joint of weed to smoke 8:28 Pastor shows up while Smokey is rolling the joint, Craig tells him to put it away but Smokey says he probably smokes too which through funny word exchange its found out that he does smoke as well 8:29 They all look at Mrs. Parker bend over and the Pastor decides to go over and pray with her and is almost hit by Hectors car 8:30 Smokey tells story of smoking with Hector and why he doesnt like him 8:31 Craig and Smokey run and try to catch Lil Chris for knocking over the neighborhood trashcans every week but he gets away from them on his bike 8:32 Deebo shows up and they both take off all of their valuables so Deebo will not try to take it from them 8:33 Deebo makes Smokey break into Stanleys (The next door neighbor) house and makes Craig be the lookout 8:34 Mr. Parker comes home to catch the Pastor in the bed with Mrs. Parker. He chases him outside and throws a brick through his car window 8:35 Stanley comes home so Craig whistles to alert Deebo and Smokey to get out of the house 8:36 After Deebo leaves Smokey rolls another joint and talks Craig into trying weed for the first time 8:37 Felisha shows up begging and they both tell her to leave 8:38 Craig starts to feel the effects of the weed and thinks that he can hear his own heartbeat and slightly bugging out having Smokey second guessing giving him the weed 8:40 They go inside Craigs house to make sandwiches and Kool-Aid but realize that Craig doesnt have any sugar so Smokey has to go and get some from his house 8:41 Debbie comes by to see if Craigs sister (Dana) was home, Smokey ask her about the friend she was going to set him up with so she gives him her number and he goes to call her meanwhile Craig tries to flirt with Debbie 8:43 Mr. Jones comes home early from work with a dog bite on his butt and Smokey starts to make jokes about it so Mr. Jones makes them go outside 8:44 Big Worm shows up to check on Smokeys progress and is not happy. He gives him until 10pm to have the money that he owes him

OBSERVATION TWO

FRIDAY, JANUARY 31, 2014 TIME: 9:00AM-10:20AM

NOTE: EVEN THOUGH THE MOVIE I AM OBSERVIING TAKES PALCE OVER AN ENTIRE DAY I WILL BE GIVING ACCOUNTS OF WHAT I AM OBSERVING IN REAL TIME AS I SEE IT HAPPENING. I AM ALSO DOING A SLIGHTLY LONGER OBSERVATION IN AN ATTEMT TO GIVE BETTER CLARITY. OBSERVATION SETTING: RANCHO CUCAMONGA A NEIGHBORHOOD AWAY FROM CRAIGS HOUSE. HIS UNCLES HOUSE IS THE MAINSTAY OF MOST OF THE MOVIE BUT OTHER PLACES VISITED INCLUDE DAY-DAYS JOB (PINKYS RECORD STORE), AND THE JOKER BROTHERS HOUSE. IT IS SOMEWHAT OF A NICE CHANGE FROM WHERE HIS FATHER LIVES, THE HOUSES ARE BIGGER AND THEY SAY THE AIR SMELLS AND TASTE BETTER.

FIGURED WORLD: Although the scenery changed a little the rule and regulations for this figured world remain the same ACTORS: Craig: Main focus of the story. Is visiting his uncle while things with Deebo cool down. Craigs role is still the clear headed friend who has your back through it all. He will do whatever he can to help you. Day-Day: Craigs cousin whose family won the lottery and moved to the suburb. His role is the jokester and introducing his cousin Craig to the suburb and the people. Uncle Elroy: Craigs uncle who won the lottery and is taking Craig in while he is in Rancho Cucamonga. He feels as if he is the boss of the neighborhood and constantly says that he is better than his brother Mr. Jones. He sees himself as the man every other man wishes they could be. Joker Brothers: Consist of Joker, Lil Joker, and Baby Joker. They are the neighborhood thugs that sell drugs. They were recently released from prison and took over their mothers house. Their roles are to be the tough guys of the neighborhood. Karla: Craigs love interest. She is the sister of the Joker Brothers. She is also interested in Craig but her brothers make it hard. DWana: Day-Days ex-girlfriend who acts as if she is pregnant by him. She has a sister that she uses as a way of scaring Day-Day. Her role is to cause drama in Day-Day life. ARTIFACTS: Day-Days Car: He treats his car like his baby. It hurt him when his ex keyed it and he wouldnt even sell it to help pay the taxes.

Uncle Elroys Ego: He always throws how much better he is than everyone especially his brother. He also feels that he is the king of his neighborhood. Weed: Is still being used throughout the movie as a way of dealing with problems that arise or just relaxing. DISCOURSE COMMUNITIES: Smokers: Craig, Day-Day, Uncle Elroy, Roach- All these actors smoke weed throughout the movie and it is the norm to them. Trouble Makers: Joker Brothers, DWana, Baby D- always causing problems and doing something to someone. They see nothing wrong with using violence to get their point across. LITERACY PRACTICES: Threatening: Threats are used as a way of trying to get what is wanted out of other actors such as DWana saying she is going to get Baby D. Bragging: Bragging is used to try and make other actors feel lower than some. Uncle Elroy brags a lot about his lifestyle to try and make himself seem more important.

MY OBSERVATION 9:00AM Shows Deebo laying on the ground after Craig beat him up. Craig also gives a rundown of what has previously happened. 9:02AM Deebo and his little brother break out of jail. 9:03AM Craig is rolling up a joint in the bathroom and is getting ready to go to his uncles house. 9:05AM A dog takes a dump in the front yard of the Joness house 9:06AM Mr. Jones comes outside and falls in the dog dung 9:06AM Deebo sits outside and waits for Craig 9:07AM Craig explains that Smokey went to rehab to try and stop smoking 9:07AM Mr. Jones and Craig leave for Rancho Cucamonga 9:08AM Deebo and his little brother jump out in front of the truck and demand a rematch 9:08AM Mr. Jones punches the gas and hits them with his truck 9:09AM Craig smells the dog feces that his dad has fallen in and starts to complain 9:10AM They arrive at Uncle Elroys house and Mr. Jones talks about his dislike for his brother. He also give Craig some advice about not changing

9:11AM Day-Day and Uncle Elroy come out of the house to greet Craig 9:13AM The Joker Brothers pull up across the street and Craig asks Day-Day who they are. DayDay takes a minute to show Craig his car which he love more than anything 9:16AM DWana Shows up to their house and keys Day-Days car 9:16AM Uncle Elroy introduces his girlfriend Suga to Craig 9:17AM Day-Day goes outside and tries to deal with his ex-Girlfriend who he has a restraining order on, which gets him massed in the face 9:18AM Uncle Elroy comes outside and runs water on Day-Day face then he shows Craig the rest of the house 9:20AM Day-Day explains the situation with DWana to Craig 9:23AM Deebo makes Tyron call and leave Mr. Jones a message that Craig was in trouble and to come quick 9:25AM Deebo and Tyron hide in Mr. Joness truck 9:26AM Craig sees Karla and runs over to talk to her 9:27AM Joker Brothers see Craig talking to their sister and dont like it so they send the dog Cheeko after him 9:28AM Craig and Day-Day jump on top of Day-Days car and Craig fends off Cheeko with his belt 9:28AM Day-Day leaves for work 9:29AM Craig walks back into the house and smokes with his uncle and Suga 9:30 AM Uncle Elroy drops to the ground from the smoke, then Craig takes a hit and also falls out 9:32 AM Everyone wakes up from being passed out and Uncle Elroy and Suga go upstairs to have sex 9:35AM The delivery man delivers a tax notice to the house 9:38AM An African man walks into Day-Day job and is mad and acting stupid. Craig walks in and throws the man to the floor 9:40AM Craig gave Day-Day the tax notice and after he opened it they realized that $3,900 was owed 9:41AM DWana and Baby D show up and Craig tries to lie and say Day-Day is not there 9:43AM Baby D chases Day- Day around the parking lot until he makes a deal with her to set her up with Craig

9:45AM Craig and Day-Day run inside so DWana has Baby D throw a brick in Day-Days car window 9:47AM Craig feels bad for what has just happened to Day-Day so he gets him high at work 9:49AM The boss Pinky shows up to the store and thinks they are being robbed by Craig and gets into a fight with him 9:54AM After finding out that Craig was Day-Days cousin he fires him and Roach 9:56AM Day-Day gets home and shows his father the tax letter and explains he just lost his job 9:58AM The Joker Brothers pull up and run over Roaches skateboard and Craig sees them remove something from their car that he believes contains money 10:02AM The Joker Brothers are having a party with some females so Craig uses this as a chance to steal the money 10:08AM Craig almost gets caught by one of the brothers 10:10AM Craig accidently popped up in Karlas room and had to come up with a story about trying to see her 10:12AM Day-Day and Roach go to the Joker Brothers door to see if they have Craig and are taken inside themselves 10:14AM Mr. Jones Shows up and realizes that there was no message sent to him about Craig 10:17AM Craig tells his dad and uncle that Day-Day and Roach are in the Joker Brothers house 10:20AM They come up with a plan to go and get Day-Day and Roach back

OBSERVATION THREE SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 1, 2014 TIME: 8:00AM-8:45AM

NOTE: EVEN THOUGH THE MOVIE I AM OBSERVIING TAKES PALCE OVER AN ENTIRE DAY I WILL BE GIVING ACCOUNTS OF WHAT I AM OBSERVING IN REAL TIME AS I SEE IT HAPPENING. OBSERVATION SETTING: AN APARTMENT SHARED BY CRAIG AND DAY-DAY AND THE STRIP MALL WHERE THEY WORK IN THE GHETTO OF LOS ANGELES CALIFORNIA FIGURED WORLD: They are now back closer to Craigs original neighborhood but again the rules remain the same

ACTORS: Money Mike: A local business owner who acts like a pimp. He is a funny man but serious about his money. His role is thinking he is the biggest pimp out when actually nothing about him is big not even his height Donna: Money Mikes girl but Craig is really into her. She work at the store that Money Mike owns but acts as if she is unhappy in her current conditions both business and personal. Damon: He is the son of the landlord and was recently released from prison. He is big and uses his size for intimidation but is also always making advances at other men. He lives with his mother and helps collect on the rent. ARTIFACTS: Day-Days Position: As soon as he got the job he felt he was the most powerful person on earth. He was ready to protector of the whole world but also wanted perks he felt should come with the job Whistles: The whistles given to Craig and Day-Day to do their job but dont really help in any way Bros Bar-B-Que: This is the restaurant that Mr. Jones and his brother now own. It is an important place because it is somewhat of a good come up for Mr. Jones but at the same time it is a step down for his once lottery winning brother DISCOURSE COMMUNITIES: Smokers: Craig, Day-Day, Uncle Elroy, The Police- These people enjoy smoking weed Wrongdoers: Ghetto Santa, The Police, Damon- These people want to cause harm to people by stealing or inflicting pain

MY OBSERVATION

8:00AM Everyone is asleep except for a drunk ghetto looking Santa roaming the streets 8:02AM Ghetto Santa breaks into Craig and Day-Day apartment and steals everything 8:03AM Craig wakes up and catches him stealing and starts fighting with him but ends up losing and he gets away 8:05 Craig wakes up Day-Day and tells him that they have just been robbed 8:08AM The cops show up and Craig explains what happened during the robbery and what was taken 8:10AM Day-Day asks Craig if they are still going to have their Christmas party 8:11AM The cops find a weed plant but instead of arresting them they just take the plant 8:12AM The apartment manager shows up and asks about the rent money that they owe and informs them that her son Damon is now out of prison 8:14AM Craig and Day-Day start to leave for work 8:15AM They run into Damon outside who tells them that they better have the rent money when they return home 8:17AM As Craig and Day-Day leave for work the cops are seen smoking the weed that they just took from them 8:18AM Craig give Day-Day a rundown of how this new job is going to go but Day-Day has his own plans 8:19AM As they are walking into their parents restaurant they mistake Mr. Jones for the ghetto Santa and jump on him 8:21AM They talk about the new job as security guards with their family but no one will say what happened to the old guards 8:23AM Mr. Jones introduces them to their new boss who give them a quick tour of the place but still will not answer about the previous guards 8:28AMCraig and Day-Day go into the security booth where Craig hopes nothing happens and Day-Day just wants some action 8:30AM Day-Day starts yelling at elderly women who are singing on the corner 8:32AM Day-Day tries to make a woman give him her number before he would allow her to park 8:33AM Craig takes Day-Day to the alley and makes him smoke a joint in an attempt to calm him down 8:34AM Uncle Elroy scares them while they are in the alley

8:35AM Ghetto Santa shows up and robs them in the alley 8:36AM After robbing them Santa runs and Uncle Elroy chases him but he gets away 8:38AM The apartment manager sneaks into their place while they are gone and is bitten by Cheeko while trying to take some weed 8:39AM Uncle Elroy reports the robbery to the police who really couldnt care less 8:40AM Craig goes and talks to Donna but is interrupted by Day-Day who thinks he has a chance 8:43AM Some thieves try and steal out of the pimp store but Craig and Day-Day catch them as they walk out 8:44AM Uncle Elroy doesnt want to wear the reindeer costume for the Christmas get together for some children at the restaurant but does it anyway 8:45AM Money Mike tries to come cut the thieves but is stopped by Craig who talks some sense into him

Interview Questions for the Character Craig 1. Explain the role you feel you hold in your neighborhood. 2. How would you define the relationship between you and Smokey? 3. Do you feel that he is a good/bad influence on you? 4. Tell me a few of your regrets. 5. Can you explain an important lesson you have learned growing up in your neighborhood? 6. Give me an example of something about your neighborhood you would change. 7. How has your life changed since you have started smoking? 8. Do you feel this is a good change? Why? 9. Looking back would you change your decision to start smoking? 10. Give some advice that you feel would have been helpful to you.

A1.The role I feel I play is one of the guy that tries to get along with everybody. I dont mess with nobody and I dont want nobody to mess with me, lets all just chill and do our thing simple as that! A2. Smokey is my boy, he been down with me since day one. He funny as hell and he keep everyone around him laughing. He might have some things to work on but we all do and he still going to be my boy. A3. Im a grown man! Im not easily influenced if someone tries to get me to do something I choose for myself if I will do it. So to answer your question I dont feel that he is a good or bad influence he is just my friend.

A4. A few of my regrets lets see. Dating Joi, Waiting so long to get with Debbie, not smoking sooner, but other than that any mistakes Ive made I say made me who I am today and I cant regret who I am. A5. One important lesson that I have learned is to always be aware of your surroundings. No matter what you always have to watch your back, you cant be too late to react. A6. I would change the violence that goes on day to day. The amount of violence is out of control and is unnecessary. A7. Nothing too much has changed, I snack a little more. Other than that I smoke to relax. A8. Like I said nothing has really changed, I mean it helps me wind down so I guess that is a good change. A9. No. I dont feel it had a negative impact on my life so I dont regret starting just maybe waiting so long to try it. A10. Do what you have to do when you are younger so when you get older you can move away and get your own instead of still living at home.
