SUPPORTIVE SERVICE LOCATOR (SSL) AND MANAGEMENT SYSTEM FOR VETERANS AND THEIR FAMILIES

By creating a shared database, our Veterans can benefit from having information about every service organization available to them on one interactive map. A Geographic Information System (GIS) can also be used to deal with other types of information that can be linked to this map.

Store all spatial data in one location. Apply sophisticated rules and relationships between data. Build advanced geospatial relational models (Topology,Networks). Maintain integrity and assist in normalizing data. Integrate spatial data with other IT Databases. Easily scale storage solutions (Compress & Compact). Preferred method for delivering data via the web. Supports multi-user or single use editing. Allows archiving or tracking of data over time. Ability to replicate data very easily.

The SSL will use GIS to manage, analyze and present information about geographically located features to guide individuals to supportive services, some examples include:

Housing Availability and Location Veteran Support VA, VFW, DAV, Amvets, Purple Hearts, and others Service Organizations Not For Profits, Community Liaisons, Outreach Personnel, and Active Change Agents Transportation Medical Facilities Mental/ Physical Education Social Services Family Services

Geographic Information Systems (GIS) combines layers of information about locations to give Veterans a better understanding of a particular area. The attribute data will connect the individual to their specific objectives.

The geodatabase is the common data storage and management framework for ArcGIS. It combines "geo" (spatial data) with "database" (data repository) to create a central data repository for spatial data storage and management. The SSL uses this type of data structure to:

A new Veterans Administration study estimates that 22 veterans are committing suicide each day. This represents an increase from previous study, when the VA was estimating 18 suicides per day among the vet population they serve. USA Today

Answer Questions

One of the main benefits of GIS is improved management of resources. A GIS can link data sets together by common locational data, such as addresses, which helps divisions and units share their data.

GIS technology is powerful and affordable. Its strengths lie in its ability to create, access, integrate, and publish large amounts of geographically relevant information. Currently, we are in the process of assembling a thorough geodatabase filled with information that will more efficiently serve our Veterans and their families.
