ICONIS centralized control systems give railway infrastructure managers and their agents complete control over their network operations. The unified ICONIS platform can integrate ATS (Automatic Train Supervision), SCADA (Supervisory Control And Data Acquisition), INFOTAINMENT (Passenger Information) and SECURITY as well as optional functions according to each customer's needs. A single screen set displays constant, simultaneous supervisory information on all trains and stations, giving controllers the best basis to make crucial operating decisions.

Each ICONIS system is customized to present the information most important to your specific context. The ICONIS stateof-the-art, service-proven system is event driven: events are processed as they happen. A fully customizable display of objects and diagrams delivers necessary data to all controllers simultaneously, allowing them to assess the situation as it arises and quickly concur on the most appropriate response.

AUtOMAtIC ROUtING FOR ROUtINE WORK

ICONIS fully automatic path management requires no operator intervention. Referring to the time table and real-time updates, it improves the efciency of daily trafc operationsespecially useful on large networks with dense trafc.

SMART OPERATIONS & INCIDENTS TRACKING

ICONIS manages and tracks daily routine operations and incidents. It allows mitigating actions to be taken more rapidly. With this intelligent tool: controllers can continuously pinpoint a problem, monitor events and refer back to incident data recorded stage-by-stage to determine best practices. ICONIS records events with total time accuracy, crucial in improving post-incident analysis and operator training.

SCALABLE AND CONFIGURABLE

ICONIS local and central trafc control systems share the same core software and data base, affording greater transparency. The architecture may have dozens of servers and can handle more than 200,000 inputs/outputs. The system may be distributed into multiple servers according to customer requirements. This distribution is fully transparent to the operator.

FASt PROBLEM-SPOttING AND SOLUtIONS

ICONIS detects potential trafc conicts as soon as they arise and offers operators resolution options, minimizing delays. This program has allowed network capacity to be increased by 15% in Bologna area, Italy.

the project's commissioning. The operator is free from routine operations a part from unscheduled trains, allowing them to focus on quickly processing trafc disruptions or incidents.

ADAPtING tHIRD PARtY MODULES MAINtENANCE MANAGEMENt SYStEMS (MMS)

To monitor the varied rail system equipment, ICONIS provides the support function of Alstom interlocking and train control. These MMS tools are based on ICONIS together with an ad hoc application adapted to the product it serves. In terms of software, Alstom's approach is to use what exists: Commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) software. ICONIS architecture is designed to work with COTS, with the help of an adaptor that allows them to be plugged into the ICONIS software backplane.

NO RISK OF DAtA LOSS

Unique to ICONIS is its dual active server. Two systems run continuously but only one is authorized to issue commands. If one fails, the other is given command authority, ensuring that operations remain continuous and that no data is lost during the switch-over.

UPGRADABLE tECHNOLOGY
Alstom offers customers options and modules to upgrade their system to the most current version of ICONIS. Customers also benet from upgradability to new functions.

SERVICE-ORIENtED ARCHItECtURE (SOA)

To federate incompatible proprietary software modules, ICONIS implements SOA technology, which activates the modules using a common display interface across the overall system.

LARGE-SCALE INtEGRAtION, NO SERVICE DISRUPtIONS

With no disruption to commercial service, the ICONIS Centralized Trafc Control was integrated into Bolognas control center, replacing a system installed in the 1950s. The number of lines, the high trafc density and the network complexity set Bologna as one of the most important CTC developed in Italy and Europe. The CTC offers the most sophisticated functions for a control center including Automatic Route Setting, path automatic allocation, full timetable and conict management. The control desk ergonomics is based on a new design with very large LCD video (46).

Working under a very tight deadline, Alstom supplied an integrated ICONIS solution within a turnkey system for the new 40 km Ergose suburban main line rail link between Athens International Airport and city center, in time for Greece's 2004 summer Olympics.
