Health Risk Behaviors Drugs/Alcohol

Understandings: U Alcohol and tobacco have detrimental effects on the human body on both the consumer and those close to that person. The way you treat your body affects its ability to function appropriately. The misuse of food and/or legal substances may compromise overall health.

Essential Questions:

How does my body work? What am I trying to change/improve? What is my strategy?

Established Goal: G 6.1.d refusal strategies related to alcohol, tobacco, and other drugs; 6.2.d the relationship of drugs, alcohol, tobacco, inhalants, and other harmful substances to body functioning; 6.2.e the positive and negative effects of prescription and over-the-counter medications on body functioning; 6.6.d interpretation of the contraindications for prescription drugs and over-the-counter medicines. VBOs: 6.4 Assess the harmful effects of substance abuse on the body. (SOL 6.1.d, 6.2.d, 6.2.e, 6.6.d) 6.4.1 Evaluate strategies for avoiding alcohol and tobacco, and outline appropriate refusal skills. 6.4.2 Select/infer reasons why adolescents would use alcohol or tobacco. 6.4.3 Identify potency, expiration, absorption and elimination rate and their meaning in regards to medicine use. 6.4.4 Evaluate the health risks of use/misuse of prescription drugs and over-the-counter drugs. 6.4.5 Identify the role of the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in relation to over-the-counter drugs. 6.4.6 Explain the meaning/effects of hallucinogens, designer drugs, narcotics, stimulants, depressants, and cannabis. Take Roll - Seating based on squads / groups BR REVIEW: How many drugs can you name? LIST ALL on flipchart. Identify legal v illegal. Remind students that it does not matter if it is legal or not, drug abuse can be defined as MISUSE and still have harmful effects on the body.

We have discussed drugs such as alcohol and tobacco in the last few days. Using Ch. 9-3 work in your group to complete Concept Map 40. Fill in on Flipchart. DISCUSS: The use of illegal drugs and ABUSE (mis-use) of legal drugs can have immediate, harmful effects on you and your body! The most common type of drug found in homes is usually in the form of medicine. Identify and explain the difference between prescribed and OTC. Students will complete notes fill in on their chart. Using the flipchart, introduce to students parts of a prescription label. Once they have finished updating their graphic organizer, provide them with a sample to analyze. Provide students with different medicine (OTC/prescription) labels. Move group to group to provide feedback. Formative Check: WHOLE GROUP -Flipchart Vocabulary (Odd One Out and Cloze) SQUAD GROUP - Heads Up Game. Students may work in their squad groupings to guess the vocabulary terms as their partners call out clues. Quiz: Reading a Medicine Label.
