Poverty levels decline

Statistics South Africa (Stats SA) notes that the countrys poverty levels have dropped since 2006, reaching 45.5% in 2011 when applying the upper-bound poverty line. The country has a set of three national poverty lines, namely the food poverty line (FPL); the lower-bound poverty line (LBPL) and the upper-bound poverty line (UBPL), which are used to measure poverty. Roughly 23 million people living below the upper-bound poverty line. When one looks at extreme poverty, defined as those living below the food poverty line, we can see the dramatic impact the global financial crisis of 2008/09 has had on the livelihoods of South Africas poorest. The number of people living below the food line increased to 15.8 million in 2009, from 12.6 million in 2006, before dropping to 10.2 million people in 2011. Statistician General Pali Lehohla said social grants, income growth and the expansion of credit had contributed to a drop in poverty levels.

Arrive Alive EASTER WEEKEND message by Chief Traffic Officer Victor Lekwadu

Good Friday is a religious holiday observed primarily by Christians commemorating the crucifixion of Jesus Christ and his death at calvary. It is also known as Holy Friday, Great Friday, Black Friday or Easter Friday, though the latter properly refers to the Friday in Easter week. This is the time when families and friends often take a break from their work and get together to celebrate the easter weekend. Ideally this is meant to be a time for joy. Ensure that you conduct thorough multi point safety check which includes electrical components, brakes, tyres, steering mechanism and shock absorbers before embarking on a long journey. Plan long trips with sufficient rest stops and viewing time for enjoying the beautiful scenery that South Africa is blessed with. Drive as if you are driving for others as well, be constantly aware of your surroundings and drive defensively. Road rage is a reality- do not be the cause therefore do not be the perpetrator either, it never ends pleasantly. Do not take unnecessary risks- use common sense if in doubt, distracted driving is a killer and do not text or take calls while driving. Adjust your speed according to the prevailing conditions. An advanced driver is mindful of pedestrians, stray animals, potholes, weather conditions, environmental issues and the like. Remember that your safety is our concern Dont speed or drive aggressively Dont drive under the influence Dont drive an unsafe vehicle Buckle up Dont overload your vehicle Our main objectives are to reduce accidents, fatalities and serious injuries, to create a heightened awareness of road traffic safety issues, to reduce offence rates on all key safety indices, to harmonise and coordinate common operations on all three tiers of service delivery, to contribute towards the reduction of crime in general, to maximise communications and publicity exposure on enforcement issues, to change the perception of I will not get caught to I will be caught and be punished. To avoid such, pay your outstanding traffic fines, renew your vehicle license disc on time.

Train op hope in town

Over the last two weeks the Phelophepa Train visited Burgersfort. This train delivers medical services all over the country and has won international awards such as the prestigious United Nationa Public Service Award in 2008. Since the trains inception in 1994 it has helped 14.5 million people and delivered over 500 000 pairs of glasses. The train has 40 permanent staff members and various volunteers. Archbishop Emeritus Desmond Tutu said of this train and sponsors involved in the continued care that is delivered: We sincerely salute your continued compassion and genuine concern, your strong sense of global responsibility and your financial support. We could not make this miracle happen without you. Phelophepa means Good, clean health. The train has been stopping in Burgersfort annually and over the past few days many people without the luxury of a medical aid flocked to the train for assistance. The service works on a first come, first serve basis and people in need of medical attention queued from early in the morning to make sure they will get a chance to see someone that will be able to assist them. The train has an eye clinic, a dental clinic, an educational clinic, a psychology clinic, a pharmacy clinic and a roche health clinic. The train operates 37 weeks of the year and supports existing primary health care. The Phelophepa is 14173.2 feet long and weighs just over 600 tons. Annually more than 45 000 patients register for treatment at the various clinics.

An almost impossible crossing

Mr Marcos Mosoma from GaMashamothane is a regular cyclist in the Burgersfort area. He spoke to the newspaper while the photographer was busy taking a photographs of the constant stream of vehicles from and to Burgersfort. He says that especially the

Bothashoek crossing is almost impossible to cross at certain times of the day. Taxis and some other vehicles take chances and it is very dangerous for pedestrians and cyclists. His wish for the crossing? Pointsmen to help regulate the flow of traffic.

How does your Easter weekend

This weekend is Easter weekend. Around the world Christians will remember that Jesus Christ died on the cross to pay for their sins. Christ conquered death and rose after three days. His sacrifice gives everyone who believes eternal life with God. Friday is called Good Friday and the Monday public holiday is called Family Day. Platinum Gazette asked readers how this weekend differs from other weekends in their lives. Many will be going to church while most look forward to spending time with their families.

Mr Nhlanhla Nkuna (right) said: This Easter Im working and it is also in the middle of the month so unfortunately I wont be going home and there is no money. Last year we had a nice family gathering. With him is Mr Kenny Rahlano.

Ms Dikeledi Magabane said: This weekend is different because Im going to church to pray and thank the Lord for all he is doing for me.

Mr Matsi Mabelane said: I am spending Easter weekend with my family. This Easter is about politics with this being an election year, Ill be following the politics this weekend. It will be interesting.

Mr Stephen Mphego said: I am a Catholic and we believe that during Easter God was crucified and days later rose again. We attend church and praise the Lord over this weekend. On Friday well have a night vigil and on Sunday well go to church again. The focus is on the church. It is time to praise the Lord. We will also remember those who passed away and will pray for them. It is not a weekend for braai, eating meat and indulging in worldly things. I will, myself not even be eating meat over this weekend. Mr Jeffrey Mafane said: I think this weekend should be different. People should quit drinking and go to the churches because it is Easter. It is all about remembering the death of Christ. The church is also the safest place to be.

Mnr. Willem van der Merwe s: Ek gaan bietjie weg hierdie naweek. Ek gaan myself rustig geniet.

Mr Owen Phasha said: This weekend is different because it is not a weekend to drive around. Ill go to church. Well put candles at the graves, it is the time of unveiling tombstones etc. After December, Easter is the next proper family weekend.

Mr Martiens Mabasa said: Ill be resting with my family. I work the whole week so on Easter I rest. People on the roads must be patient and drive safely. Respect the road signs and remember that God saved us and He is the only one who can keep us safe.

Mr Surprise Malepe said: This weekend is different because Ill spend it going to church and Ill remember that Jesus died for us so that we can have eternal life.

Me. Feroza Choonara en Me. Raeesa Choonara s: Dis n Christelike vakansiedag hierdie Vrydag. Dis iets baie belangrik.

differ from other weekends?

Mr Sello Mopane and Mr Dumisa Madalane said: This weekend is different because we are going to Moria where the pastor will be giving us a message. Well have a special prayer. Well be there from Thursday up to Sunday.

Me Joyce Komane s: Hierdie lang naweek is anders. Dis die tyd om te bid. Ek dink ek sal kerk toe gaan. As jy moet werk, dan moet jy seker werk, maar dan moet jy onthou van wat gebeur by die kerk.

Mr Abraham Madingwane and Mr Sipho Tshabalala said: We are going to church with the family this weekend. It is very important to celebrate Easter. Mr Vincent Mohlabe said: This is not a normal weekend. Easter is the weekend when people should go and praise the Lord and refresh their minds. With him is Hope. Left: Mr Luyanda Ntabeni and Ms Brenda Ntabeni said: We will spend our weekend going to church on Friday but the rest of the weekend will be a normal weekend. The reason for this is that we believe that you should celebrate Jesus birth and death every day. Mnr.

Mnr Sam Taba s: Hierdie naweek gaan ek Moria toe. Dis anders as ander naweke.

Me Priscilla Baird s: Paasnaweek is vir my spesiaal. By hulle is Renique en Edward. Mr Patson Sekgobela said: On Easter weekend I go to church with the family. Ill be going to Moria. We are going to pray. This is a special weekend. We must switch off from politics and other things. Now everyone must think about Jesus Christ who passed away on the cross and rose 3 days later to give us everlasting life. Me.

Visit to Mamelodi Sundowns to help develop local soccer talent

The Mokororwane Sports Academy (MSA)from Tubatse visited the Mamelodi Sundowns during an inspirational and educational trip. Some of the youngsters had never been to Gauteng and excitement was running high as they arrived at the Youth Zones centre. This was not ordinary accommodation, they boys even had access to computers and the internet! The next day the team hit the road to Thembisa where they first played against the Mamelodi Sundowns Ladies First Team. Many of this teams players are playing for Banyana Banyana. The ladies are fit and fast and is one of the toughest games the local team has ever played. The Sundowns Ladies admired the courage of the u/17 team and the final score was in favour of MSA with 3-2. MSA was the second male team to beat these ladies and the first u/17 team to do so. They were also the first team outside Gauteng to beat them. That evening the team had a braai and a motivational talk from the development coaches of Arsenal. On Sunday morning the team headed to play against Celta Vigo Development at Orange Farm. Celta Vigo is one of the few development initiatives that are producing professional players. The days game was encouraged by Simon Mablankwe, the fitness coach of Sundowns and Youth Zones Gauteng. The MSA team was motivated and wanted to leave Gauteng undefeated. They scored their first goal within the first half an hour of the game. Celta Vigo fought back, but the well trained MSA force and a good combination of middlefielders kept the defence in tact. In the 85th minute of the game MSA scored again and won 2-0. MSA is proud of their achievements in Gauteng and has been invited back. MSA would like to extend a special word of thanks to: Youth Zones, Tubatse Chrome, Sundowns Management and Celta Vigo. MSA is aiming to develop local talent and expose them to teams from other provinces to help ensure a bright future. Theyve also established a netball development initiative and is currently in need of a coach with netball experience to volunteer in coaching the ladies. MSA can be contacted through their Academy Administrator and Public Relations officer, Mr Mphogo Precious AKA Tembisa - 076 560 4771 or e-mail mphogopm@gmail.com, fax: 086 599 1525. The Modikwa Marathon Club participated in full force in the Loskop Ultra Marathon that took place last week Saturday. This race starts at Middelburg town hall and finishes at the Aventura Loskop Dam Resort. It is a favourite amongst runners wanting to better their qualifying and seeding for the Comrades Marathon. The race is 50km long and the perfect long distance before the Comrades Marathon. The days weather also played into the hands of the athletes who prefer a cool start in the morning. Peter Molapo from Modikwa finished in a time of 3:34 min. He did not run to be one the races top performers, but used the race as a tool to complete his long distance practice for the Comrades Marathon. He is already and elite athlete and will be starting the Comrades from the front. The results of the team: Stephen Moeng 3:32; Jeffrey Nkuna 3:53, Solomon Masedi 4:10; Justice Phokane 4:48, Albert Twala 4:52; Lawrence Raphiri 5:26. The 21.1km whild challenge was run by Salome Makuoa in 3:02 and Relocnation Maphanga in 3:26. Jeanette Setshabe ran the 5km fun run and finished in 1:17 while having a ball! This year Leboka Noto did not run as he will be running in Cape Town at the Two Oceans Ultra Marathon this weekend. He will be joined by Herman Mogale (novice), Jeffrey Nkuna and Sonia Makuoa (novice) from the club. The Modikwa Marathon Club would like to wish them all the best for this weekend. Their colleagues will be watching on the television - hoping for a win for Leboka. He has done very well in this race in previous years.
