. 23 at 10:00am in DGD Instructions: Write MAT 1348 (A or B) and DGD session (1 or 2) in the top left corner of the rst page. Also write your TAs name. Put your rst and last name and your student number in the top right corner of the rst page. Clearly denote the homework number. Please write the solutions to the problems in the order they are assigned. Submit the homework to your TA in the DGD. Late assignments will not be accepted. 1. Write each of the following statements as a compound proposition using correct logical connectives. You must clearly dene the propositional variables you used in your compound propositions. (Note: The brackets in the last proposition will help you with the bracketing of the compound proposition.) (a) There is lots of snow on the ground when it is cold. (b) You are able to go skiing on Mont Tremblant and you do not have lots to study only if it is a holiday. (c) For you not to be able to go skiing on Mount Tremblant it is necessary and sucient that it is not cold or there isnt lots of snow on the ground. (d) In order for you to be able to go skiing on Mont Tremblant, it is sucient that there is lots of snow on the ground and you do not have lots to study. (e) If it is a holiday and there is lots of snow on the ground, then (you are able to go skiing on Mont Tremblant unless you have lots to study). 2. The table below is a truth table for two mystery compound propositions A and B . Each of these consists of atomic propositions p and q , and logical connectives. p T T F F q T F T F A B T F T F F T T T

(a) Write a DNF formula (Disjunctive Normal Form) for each of the compound propositions A and B . (b) Write a formula for each of the compound propositions A and B using only logical connectives and . 1

(c) Write a formula for each of the compound propositions A and B using only logical connectives and . 3. Consider the following compound propositions: (i) (p (q r)) (p (q r)) (ii) (p q ) r (iii) ((p q ) r) (p q ) (a) Determine for each of the compound propositions above whether it is a tautology, a contradiction, or a contingency. (b) For each contingency, give all truth assignments of the propositional variables for which the compound proposition is false. (c) Which pairs of compound propositions (if any) in the list above are logically equivalent? (d) Determine whether the given set of propositions is consistent. Clearly explain what feature of the truth table supports your answer. 4. On the Island of Knights and Knaves you meet two natives, A and B. Given their statements below, what can you determine about their identities? Fully explain your reasoning. (a) A says:B is a knave only if 2 + 3 = 4, and B says nothing. (b) A says: Either I am a knight or B is a knave, but not both, and B says: If I am a knight, then A isnt.
