Product Description
The Problem
Due to the evolution of electronics and microprocessors in the home, we are continually challenged to provide quality (clean) power for electronic loads such as appliances, computers/ home ofce and entertainment systems. Surges (also known as transients) due to lighting, utility grid switching and other sources travel on current carrying conductors throughout the home, which can effect and destroy sensitive electronic loads.
Application Description
Two-Stage Protection
The Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers (IEEE) recommends two stages of surge suppression to provide the best protection for electronic equipment. Two-stage surge suppression should be provided for all cables entering a home, including power, Internet, coaxial and telephone.
The Solution
Eaton has developed the most comprehensive family of surge protection devices and lightning arresters installed at service entrance and point-of-use locations, providing quality power required for sensitive electronic loads.

Comprehensive Diagnostics
Our patent-pending Thermo-Dynamic Fusing System provides both safety and performance. This technology uses a fuse trace on each individual metal oxide varistor (MOV) that can sustain high surge currents and provide the necessary interruption of high fault currents (kAIC). Thermo-Dynamic Fusing System also includes a thermal fuse spring (TFS) that provides the needed disconnection from low level fault currents.
The Visor is an intelligent surge suppression device that offers advanced monitoring options. It offers improved safety and reliability from a new patent-pending technology Thermo-Dynamic Fusing. Independently tested by lightning laboratories to ensure performance, long-term reliability, and quality standards are met. Installation exibility for all low voltage distribution equipment. Worldwide customer, engineering, and application support.
Maintenance-free surge suppression. (No external test set or routine maintenance required.) The NetVisor, our premium display, allows you to monitor your surge protective device from across the plant or across the world. All monitoring display panels are completely removable and can be installed horizontally or vertically, offering four mounting positions.

Product Description
Eatons Cutler-Hammer Clipper Power System Visor Series Integrated Design Provides the Lowest System Let-Through Voltage at the Bus Bar Compared to Traditional Cable Connected TVSS Units
The Clipper Power System Visor Series utilizes a direct bus bar connection to achieve the industrys lowest let-through voltage effectively suppressing both high and low energy transients. This design provides superior suppression ratings and eliminates poor performance that results from cable connections and/or long lead lengths. Due to the integrated design, the Visor Series also eliminates:
Expensive horizontal outboard wall space. Field installation costs. Potential electrical code violations due to improper installation. Invalidation of third party certications when connecting to existing products. Other suppressor manufacturers measurements are made at the TVSS module or the suppressor terminal, not at the distribution equipment bus bar. The distance between the module or suppressor terminals and the distribution equipment bus bar is often 14 inches (355.6 mm) or more. The impedance associated with this lead length can signicantly increase the transient let-through voltage.

February 2007
When installing a surge suppressor in a retrot environment, it is important to mount the suppressor as close to the electrical equipment as possible. Keep the wiring (lead length) between the electrical equipment and the suppressor as short as possible (less than 14 inches (355.6 mm) is recommended), and twist/wire tie the conductors to reduce inductive effects. Installation lead length reduces the performance of any surge suppressor. For each inch of wiring (installation lead length), add 15 to 25 volts to the surge suppressors published let-through voltage at 400 volts and installation of 3 feet (.9 m) of cable = 1000 volts installed rating.
Application Flexibility
100, 120, 160, 200, 250, 300, 400 and 500 kA ratings are available. All units utilize our low impedance SurgePlane suppression platform to ensure surge currents are equally diverted to all suppression components, therefore extending life expectancy. All Visor Series designs have been independently tested to verify published ratings and long-term reliability.

Product Description
Cutler-Hammer Datacom surge protection products by Eaton Corporation are designed for all industries and applications. The wide range of products offer rugged surge protection in convenient, easy-to-install congurations. Exceptional performance is achieved using three-stage hybrid technology:
Gas tubes for shunting high energy. Silicon avalanche components for responsive, low let-through voltages. PTC resettable fuses for mitigating fault current. Our modular design enables customers to protect complete facilities or individual loads. Customers also save signicant time and money due to our unique plug-in components and protection modules.
The ability of a plant to ride through voltage sags can have a signicant impact on operations and competitiveness. In the United States, voltage sags cost billions of dollars in lost production, interruption, damaged materials, retooling and scrap. In addition, sags can cause: increased operating costs, the need for product reworks, safety hazards, equipment damage and/or failure, reduced product quality, increased clean-up, additional labor costs, increased scrap material and costs associated with investigations into the problem.

Feeder Breakers End User End User 2. Creates a sag event for all users on the system
EPRI conducted a two-year study of power quality levels on distribution systems in the United States. A variation event was recorded every time the voltage dropped below 90% of the nominal. The results are shown in Figure 10-17. A typical distribution system customer experiences about 50 events per year when the voltage drops below 90%, and only about two events per year when the voltage drops below 30% of nominal. The utility study concluded that sags represented almost all of the events experienced at a typical facility.
Figure 10-15. Deep, Single-Phase Sag Todays industrial and large commercial electricity customers are becoming more sensitive to power disturbances and are demanding better electric quality. However, the quality of power grids is not signicantly improving. Customers still experience power quality problems that affect plant operations and protability.

The IEEE denes voltage regulation as overvoltage or undervoltage. Voltage regulation events last from a few minutes to many hours with voltage varying by +/- 20%. Long-term regulation problems differ from short duration sags and dips, which are much deeper voltage drops.
The Solution
Prior to installing an expensive solution, Eaton encourages customers to monitor incoming voltage to determine if voltage regulation is a problem. The local utility may also be able to provide information on voltage expected at the facility. Using a meter, it can quickly be determined if a voltage regulation problem or brownout condition exists. The appropriate solution would be an Electronic Voltage Regulator (EVR). EVRs can be installed at the service entrance, branch panel or at critical loads The Cutler-Hammer Electronic Voltage Regulator is a solid-state tap changing power conditioner designed to protect against brownouts and long duration voltage regulation problems. Product Description
Electronic Voltage Regulator
The Cutler-Hammer Electronic Voltage Regulator (EVR) is the ideal solution for keeping your facility and equipment up and running during brownouts, undervoltage conditions and other power problems. The EVR can signicantly reduce the costs of equipment damage and downtime when these situations occur. The state-ofthe-art design provides rapid response time, high efciency, high inrush current capability, and operating advantages exclusive to Eaton. The EVR maintains a tightly regulated output voltage by automatically activating the appropriate transformer tap through a silicone controlled rectier (SCR). Tap changer response time is initiated at one cycle, ensuring rapid and precise regulation. Switching at zero current enables noise reduction during tap transitions.
Coordinated with standard thermalmagnetic breakers to allow motor starts. Optional 100 kA per phase surge protection. Input frequency range operation from 57 63 Hz. Not affected by load power factor. Can operate effectively in low-load applications due to unique leakage reactance technology. Failsafe bypass circuit, isolation transformer and overtemperature protection. Less than 1% THD. Monitoring panel displays rms metering, output voltage and current, kVA, under- and overvoltage, phase rotation, phase loss, rst and second stage temperature alarm, shut-off, EPO tripped and eight optional external ports.

Brownouts
In the United States, most facilities have sufcient voltage regulation. However, in some U.S. locations and many developing countries, regulation problems occur because of overstressed utility distribution systems. In some cases, due to the excessive demand on the utility system, voltage may be below 10% of nominal (-10%) during the day. This condition is called a voltage regulation or brownout. Customers may notice dim lights and reduced power. During the evening, voltage may rise above 10% of nominal (+10%) because large facilities and loads are shut down. This shutdown reduces the power demand on the grid and results in a voltage increase.

UNIPAK
Harmonic Filtering
As the world becomes more dependent on electric and electronic equipment, the likelihood that the negative impact of harmonic distortion increases dramatically. The efciency and productivity gains from these increasingly sophisticated pieces of equipment have a negative side effectincreased harmonic distortion in the power lines. The difcult thing about harmonic distortion is determining the cause. Once this has been determined, the solution can be easy. Passive harmonic ltering equipment will mitigate specic harmonic issues, and correct poor power factor as well.

Product Description
Power Factor Correction Capacitors
Power factor correction capacitors and harmonic lters are an essential part of modern electric power systems. Power factor correction capacitors are the simplest and most economical means of increasing the transmission capacity of a power system, minimizing energy losses and correcting load power factor. In addition, power factor penalties can be reduced and power quality can be greatly enhanced. There are two main reasons to correct poor power factor. The rst is to reduce or eliminate a power factor penalty charged by your local utility. Another reason is that your existing transformer is, or shortly will be, at full capacity and installing power factor correction capacitors can be a very cost-effective solution to installing a brand new service. Depending on the amount of power factor correction (number of kvar that needs to be injected into the electrical system to improve the power factor) and the dynamic nature of the load, a xed or switched capacitor bank may be the best solution. When capacity becomes a problem, the choice of a solution will be dependent upon the size of the increase needed. Like all power quality solutions, there are many factors that need to be considered when determining which solution will be best to solve your power factor problem.

Programmable to automatically add/subtract lter banks to maintain preset target power factor. Filter steps tuned for maximum efciency in reducing harmonic currents in three-phase environments with heavy 6-pulse loads. Efcient modular design for short lead times, ease of maintenance and ease of future expansion. Heavy-duty, three-phase capacitor construction with reliable, threaded terminal connections. Cool operating, 100% copper wound, thermal protected reactors are sized for worst-case, 6-pulse harmonic environment. UL and CSA listed.
Applications
Service entrance power factor correction installations requiring precise maintenance of target power factor in three-phase, 6-pulse, high harmonic environments.
Operation: AUTOVAR harmonic lters are designed to be sized the same as any power factor correction unit. In most low voltage applications where harmonics are generated by 6-pulse devices, no harmonic audit is necessary to design the AUTOVAR lter because it is already designed for the worstcase environment at the kvar size specied. Cabinet: 12 gauge steel with ANSI 61 gray, baked enamel. Lift bolts standard. NEMA 1. Power line interconnect: Rugged, copper bus bar connection with access provided for top or bottom entry. All internal power wiring connections from bus are laid out on a most direct basis with minimum bends for ease of troubleshooting. Modular tray design: Capacitor banks arranged in modular trays with capacitors, fuses, blown-fuse indicating lights, and contactors grouped in a logical easily understood layout. This permits easy access, quick identication of operating problems and ease of expandability. Fusing: UL recognized, 200,000 ampere interrupting capacity provided on all three phases of each bank. Push-to-test: Allows testing of door fuse indicating lights. AutoLocate: When door is open and bus energized, fuse circuit automatically checks for cleared fuses. If a fuse has cleared, the light at that fuse comes on for easy troubleshooting. Door interlock: Door interlock automatically turns off control circuit when engaged. Power continues to be provided to the unit until disconnect is open.
Interwiring: On-site interwiring of multiple cabinet design is made simple by prenumbered bundles and clear diagrams. Exhaust fans: Two fans per cabinet provide thermal protection for both capacitor cabinet and reactor cabinet. Dust ltering provided.
Controller
Digital display of power factor and number of energized banks. Automatic setting of c/k value. Visual display of harmonic overload. Visual indication of insufcient kvar to reach target power factor. Output relays disabled within 35 milliseconds of main power interruption. Personnel ground fault interruption provides protection in case of accidental contact with control power and ground. Control wiring standard NEC color-coded modular bundles with quick disconnect feature for ease of troubleshooting or ease of expandability.
Reactors
Tuning: Reactors tuned to the 4.7th harmonic (nominal 5th). This provides maximum effectiveness in reducing harmonic currents in three-phase systems with harmonics caused by 6-pulse devices. Windings: 100% copper windings for minimal temperature rise under load. Thermal overload protection: Each reactor includes three normally closed, auto reset thermostats that open at 145C. When thermostats engage, the contactor opens. Insulation: 180C insulation system. Warranty: One-year replacement of reactors.

TVSS, Power Conditioning, PF Capacitors & Harmonic Filters 10-53 Metal-Enclosed Medium Voltage
February 2007
General Description
UNIVAR
Applications
Commercial Customers
Many commercial customers are purchasing power from their utility at higher voltages today (2.4 kV 15 kV), and can also take advantage of medium voltage power factor correction systems. These solutions can meet the needs of large ofce complexes, hospitals and universities, among others. The benets of safety (key interlocking, no exposed live parts, etc.), and aesthetics (low prole, can be painted to match environment) both meet the needs of these applications where there are large numbers of untrained personnel in proximity of electrical equipment.
Utility Customers
Metal-enclosed power factor correction systems are fully assembled, tested and ready for installation. Very little eld assembly is required. Installation and maintenance costs for metal-enclosed systems are low compared to pole and rack mounted capacitor banks. Metal-enclosed systems and harmonic lters are less vulnerable to wildlife and airborne contaminants that can cause tracking and faults. In addition, metal-enclosed systems signicantly reduce the risks and the associated liability involving untrained personnel. All live parts are contained in a grounded, key interlocked enclosure and no internal hardware is accessible. Metal-enclosed systems are aesthetically pleasing due to their low prole, and can be painted to match the surrounding architecture. These are just some of the reasons more and more utilities are utilizing metal-enclosed capacitor and harmonic lter systems.
Features
Enclosure

Product Description
Capacitors for medium voltage, heavy-duty applications:
Industrial Customers
Large industrial power users can utilize the benets associated with medium voltage power factor correction and harmonic ltering. Medium voltage solutions usually support the scale and scope of larger services. Medium voltage applications can be found in the following types of industries as examples: automotives, pulp and paper, plastics, petrochemical, and heavy manufacturing. Individual xed capacitors provide power factor correction directly at the cause of the problem, such as a large horsepower MV motor. Medium voltage systems allow large industrials to correct power factor at or close to the point of common coupling (PCC), where the utility electrical system meets theirs. This allows correction for an entire facility, instead of having to correct at multiple locations. The Cutler-Hammer NEMA 3R design also allows the system to be placed outdoors, saving valuable manufacturing oor space. The savings can be enormous, in materials, installation costs and oor space. In short, medium voltage solutions provide a costeffective alternative to many local low voltage power factor correction units, while protecting the customers entire electrical distribution system.

Fusing
Fuses are rated 50,000 amperes symmetrical interrupting capacity. Ratings are 165% to 250% of rated current. Fuses have visual pop-up blown fuse indication standard.
UNIVAR capacitors are designed for power factor correction in applications where a xed amount of capacitance (kvar) is required. 2400 V, 4160 V, 4800 V, 6600 V, 7200 V, 12,470 V or 13,800 V. Fast economical payback. Individual units or multiple assemblies can be designed. Indoor dustproof/outdoor waterproof enclosures (NEMA 12, NEMA 3R). Floor mounting. 2- or 3-phase fused options for 2400 V 4800 V. All units above 4800 V are supplied with fusing on all three phases (see Note). NEMA 3R terminal box.
Discharge Resistors
These reduce the residual voltage to less than 50 V residual within ve (5) minutes of de-energization.
Grounding Lugs
Standard.
Operating Temperature
-40F (-40C) to 115F (+46C)
Optional Features
Note: NEC Article 460-8 (b)(1)requires capacitors to have overcurrent protection in all ungrounded conductors (except if connected on the load side of a motor overload protection device). Three-phase capacitors fused only on two phases will not provide adequate protection if a line-to-ground fault should occur in the unfused phase.
Two or three fuses (2400 V to 4800 V). Blown fuse indicating lights (2400 V to 4800 V) for external indication. NEMA 4X stainless steel. CSA testing and labels. Inrush reactors.

This allows correction for an entire facility, instead of having to correct at multiple locations. The Cutler-Hammer NEMA 3R design also allows the system to be placed outdoors, saving valuable manufacturing oor space. The savings can be enormous, in materials, installation costs and oor space. In short, medium voltage solutions provide a cost-effective alternative to many local low voltage power factor correction units, while protecting the customers entire electrical distribution system.
Product Description
The AUTOVAR medium voltage automatic power factor capacitor systems are designed for power factor correction in applications where plant power factor can be constant or changing, and an engineered solution is required. These systems can be a xed amount of capacitance with a disconnect, a number of switched capacitance stages, or a combination of both. The AUTOVAR medium voltage capacitor system can switch stages of capacitance in and out automatically based on information collected by the power factor controller on the door-in-door control panel.

Personnel Safety
Positive mechanical isolating switch with visible disconnect completely grounds and isolates the unit from the line connectors. A screened barrier protects personnel from live parts. All medium voltage doors are mechanically interlocked with the disconnect switch. Key interlocks are provided standard on all enclosure doors, and can be coordinated with upstream disconnect devices. The low voltage control section has a separate doorin-door design, and is segregated from the medium voltage sections so that an operator can work in that section safely.
Ease of Maintenance
All components are front-accessible, facilitating routine inspection or parts replacement. A viewing window is standard on all compartment doors.
Utility Customers
Metal-enclosed power factor correction systems are fully assembled, tested and ready for installation. Very little eld assembly is required. Installation and maintenance costs for metalenclosed systems are low compared to pole and rack mounted capacitor banks. Metal-enclosed systems and harmonic lters are less vulnerable to wildlife and airborne contaminants that can cause tracking and faults. In addition, metalenclosed systems signicantly reduce the risks and the associated liability involving untrained personnel.
