Composition Basics: Perspective & Depth

The WHY: Perspective is the appearance of objects in space, and their relationship to each other and the viewer. A heightened sense of depth through strong perspective tends to improve the viewer's sense of being there in front of the real scene. The HOW: For each of the following compositional themes you will take 10-20 shots of whatever subject you think appropriate. The WHAT: Copy and paste your 2 BEST photos for each compositional theme below and tell me briefly why you think it works for that particular theme. What to HAND IN: You will hand in a copy of this worksheet and a contact sheet made in PS6 of ALL the photos taken for this assignment, (there should be at least 30). ASSESSMENT

Linear Perspective: Linear perspective is characterized by converging lines. These lines are, in most scenes, actually parallel, like the edges of a road and the top and bottom of a wall, but if they recede from the camera, they appear to converge toward a vanishing point. The line of the cars headlights and the highway lines appear to converge and meet at a certain point in the distance, though they are in reality, parallel to eachother.

The lake is relatively straight towards Oyama from the camera, but the mountains on either side appear to converge and meet at the end.

Diminishing Perspective: This is related to linear perspective. Imagine a row of identical trees lining a road. A view along the road would produce the familiar convergence in the line of trees, but individually they will appear to be successively smaller. This is diminishing perspective, and it works most effectively with identical or similar objects at different distances.

The feet of the music stands get smaller and fuzzier.

The line of asparagus bottles becomes less focused and smaller with distance.

Aerial Perspective: Atmospheric haze acts as a filter, reducing the contrast in distant parts of a scene and lightening their tone. Hazy, misty scenes appear deeper than they really are because of their strong aerial perspective.

The atmosphere between the camera and the far mountains creates depth in the picture

The light pollution above Kelowna creates a hazy atmosphere and reduces the contrast of the farther objects
