Fragment

Every sentence must have a subject and a verb and must express complete thought. A word group that lacks a subject or a verb and that does not express a complete thought is a fragment. For example, After I learned the price of new cars. I decided to keep my old Ferrari. Fragment Types !. "ependent#$ord Fragment %. &ing and to Fragment '. Added#"etail Fragment (. )issing#*ubject Fragment

Dependent-Word Fragment:
A "ependent#$ord Fragment is one which starts with a dependent word like after, as, though, even if and it cannot stand alone. +t depends on another statement to complete the thought. $hen the writer does not follow through and complete a thought, a fragment results. *ometimes the dependent words who, which, that or where appear not at the very start, but near the start, of a group, and fragments often results.

For example Tommy made an appointment. Which he did not intend to keep. orrecting a dependent-word fragment: ,y attaching it to the sentence that comes after it or the sentence that comes before it. !ommy made an appointment which he did not intend to keep. Eliminate the dependent word by rewriting the sentence. !ommy made an appointment. "e did not intend to keep it. -se a comma if a dependent#word group comes at the beginning of a sentence. .owever, do not use comma if "ependent#$ord group comes at the end of a sentence.

-ing and to Fragment:

$hen an &ing word appears at or near the start of a word group, a fragment may result. *uch fragment often lacks a subject and part of the verb. For example !rying to find a garage to repair my car. Eventually + had to have it towed to a garage in another town. orrecting #ing Fragment: Attach the &ing fragment that comes before it or the sentence that comes after it by using comma !rying to find a garage to repair my car, I had to have it towed to a garage in another town. Add a subject and change the &ing verb part to the correct form of the verb. I had to have the car towed in another town until I found a garage to repair it. /hange the 0being1 to the correct form of the verb be 2am, are, is, was, were3. Wrong: +t being the only time he could sit unbothered and dream about his future. orrect: +t was the only time he could sit unbothered and dream about his future.

Added-Detailed Fragment:

Added#"etailed Fragments lack a subject and a verb. They often begin with one of the following words also, except, including, especially, for example, such as For example + love to cook and eat +talian food. &specially spaghetti and pi''a. orrecting Added-Detailed Fragment: Attach the fragment to complete thought that precedes it by using comma with the second words group. I love to cook and eat Italian food, especially spaghetti and pi''a. ,y adding a subject and a verb to the fragment. I love to cook and eat Italian food. &specially I like spaghetti and pi''a. /hange words as necessary to make the fragment part of the preceding sentence. I love to cook and eat Italian food namely spaghetti and pi''a.

The truck skidded on the rain#slick highway. *ut missed a telephone on the side of the road. orrecting (issing-)u%$ect Fragment:

$hen a subject is missing in sentence then it results into fragment. For example

,y using a comma to attach the fragment to the preceding sentence. !he truck skidded on the rain-slick highway, %ut missed a telephone pole on the side of the road. ,y adding a subject which can often be a pronoun standing for the subject in the preceding sentence. !he truck skidded on the rain-slick highway %ut it missed a telephone pole on the side of the road.
