An Ideal Text for Surveying the Old Testament,
Now Including a Book-by-Book Component
Tis proven Old Testament text, with a wealth of full-color images, helps readers connect the world of the Old Testament with todays
world. Old Testament Today, 2nd Edition, newly revised, includes a book-by-book survey, new maps and graphics, and other updates
throughout.
Unique among Old Testament surveys, Old Testament Today, 2nd Edition not only provides an orientation to the world of the Old
Testament, but also builds a bridge between the original audience and modern readers, demonstrating why the ancient message is
important for faith and life today. It goes beyond basic content to help students understand what the Scriptures mean and how to
apply them personally.
Taking readers progressively through the Old Testament, this text: (1) presents the details of the content, focusing on the story line,
historical background, and literary information that address the original setting and audience; (2) focuses on theological perspectives
and on issues of the authors purpose and the universal message of the text, building a bridge between the original audience and
todays audience; and (3) develops an understanding of the relevance of the Old Testament writings to todays Christian, showing how
they can be applied in personal faith and practice.

Do we know who all of the authors of
the Bible are? The short answer to that
is no. In times past, however, it was
considered important to be able to as-
sign authorship to each book. This was
because the authority of the book was
in part reiterated by associating it with
known authoritative voices (e.g., the
prophets). Consequently, tradition is
flled with associations of books with
particular authors. Some of these offer
internal rationale (e.g., David with Psalms or Solomon with
the Song of Songs) while others offer only the most fragile of
circumstantial evidence (e.g., Jeremiah with 1 and 2Kings).
Pentateuch
The tradition of Moses as the author of the Pentateuch
is strong both in the Old Testament and in the New Testa-
ment (see Authors and Books, p. 000). The text offers strong
conrmation that Moses should at least be considered the
speaker, author, or editor of a large portion of the Pentateuch,
although occasional statements appear to require a later
hand (e.g., Gen. 12:6; 36:31; Deut. 34).
Historical Books
The historical books offer the least information about
their authorship. The traditional authors such as Samuel (for
the books of Samuel) or Jeremiah (for the books of Kings)
enjoy little ancient or textual support as authors and have
generally been so identied by nothing more than the promi-
nence of their roles. All major characters are referred to in
the third person. In addition, no later biblical literature of-
fers any suggestion as to authorship. Many today believe that
Joshua, Judges, Samuel, and Kings were all edited together
during the exile or soon after it. This group is therefore some-
times labeled the Deuteronomistic History, since it reects
the theological themes of Deuteronomy. As a result, modern
writers typically refer to authors such as the deuteronomist
(Joshua Kings) or the chronicler (Chronicles).
Prophets
It is appropriate to assume that the prophets to whom
prophetic writings were attached were the ones who delivered
those messages. That does not necessarily
mean that the prophet was the one who
wrote down the message or who compiled
the book of those messages. It should be
noted that the prophets are at times re-
ferred to in the third person. In Jeremiah
we are told that a scribe named Baruch
served as his secretary (Jer. 36:4). In
Isaiah many believe the rst ve chap-
ters to be a digest of the oracles that
stretched throughout his career. If this is
true, it would suggest a later editor. Some believe that a few
of the prophetic books may have had additional prophecies
added on at a later date, perhaps by generations of followers
of the prophet, but criteria have not been clearly established
so that such determinations could be made with condence.
Wisdom
It is no surprise that Solomon is connected to a number of
the wisdom books of Israel. Sections of Proverbs are explicitly
attributed to Solomon (1:1; 10:1; 25:1). He is mentioned by
name in Song of Songs (1:1, 5; 3:7, 9; 8:11 12) possibly as
author. In Ecclesiastes the rst person pronoun is used for
one describing himself as the son of David, king in Jerusalem
(1:1, 12), giving the strong impression that Solomon is thus
identied, although his name is never used.

The Covenant and Abram. God did not ask Abram to give up any-
thing that he was not going to replace. God asked Abram to leave his
land, and God promised to take Abram to a new land. After Abram
arrived there, God said he would give him that land. God also asked
Abram to leave his kinship group. This meant giving up the pro-
tection and security a kinship group provided. He was leaving his
roots and putting aside all that was familiar to him. In return, God
offered Abram a family that would become a great nation. Eventu-
ally God told him that his descendants would be as numerous as
the stars. The third thing God asked Abram to leave behind was
the house of his father. This could be identified as his inheritance.
In the ancient Near East, household gods were passed down from
generation to generation. There were ancestors to make offerings to
and to care for. Most important was the care of elderly parents and
eventually their burial. The inheritance one received included not
only material possessions and ownership of land; it involved taking
ones place in the family line and appropriating the blessings that
had been passed down through the family line. As Abram put all
of this behind him, God offered a threefold blessing for him. God
would bless Abram,
he would be a bless-
ing, and he would be
a channel of blessing.
The first meant that
Abram would come
under Gods care,
protection, and favor,
which would bring him
safety and prosperity.
The second meant that
Abram would provide
care and protection
to those in favor with
him. And the third
meant that God would
bring blessing to other
people through Abram
and his family.

As a part of the Counterpoints series, Four Views on the Historical Adam clearly outlines four primary
views on Adam held by evangelicals, featuring top-notch proponents of each view presenting their
positions in their own words and critiquing the positions with which they disagree. Readers will
come away with a better understanding of the key biblical and theological issues at stake and of the
implications of Adam for contemporary Christian witness and church life.

Contributors and views include:
Denis O. Lamoureux: No Historical Adam, Evolutionary Creation View
John H. Walton: A Historical Adam, Archetypal Creation View
C. John Collins: A Historical Adam, Old-Earth Creation View
William D. Barrick: A Historical Adam, Young-Earth Creation View

Each contributor focuses his essay on answering the following questions:
What is the biblical case for your viewpoint, and how do you reconcile it both with modern
science and with passages and potential interpretations that seem to counter it?
In what ways is your view more theologically consistent and coherent than other views?
What are the implications of your view for the spiritual life and public witness of the church and
individual believers, and how is your view a healthier alternative for both?

Concluding refections by pastor-scholars Gregory A. Boyd (Whether or Not Tere Was a Historical
Adam, Our Faith Is Secure) and Philip G. Ryken (We Cannot Rightly Understand the World or Our
Faith Without a Real, Historical Adam) highlight the signifcance of the topic in the faith of everyday
believers.

Tinking through Paul: A Survey of His Life, Letters, and Teology, by New Testament scholars Bruce W. Longenecker and Todd D. Still,
is a college and seminary level textbook ideally suited for courses on Pauls life and writings or for those interested in the apostles life.
Te study of Paul and his letters can be exciting, challenging, and life-changing, but only if it is done well and only if students achieve
more than a basic familiarity with the subject. Tis is exactly what Pauline experts Bruce W. Longenecker and Todd D. Still accomplish
with their new textbook. Longenecker and Still bring decades of study, and expertise to Tinking through Paul, challenging readers to
delve deeply into Pauls writings and wrestle with his richly-layered and dynamic theological discourse.
Seeking to situate their study of the apostle in proper perspective, Longenecker and Still frst look at Pauls life before and after
his encounter with the risen Christ en route to Damascus, then examine each of Pauls letters individually, and fnally synthesize the
Pauline writings to highlight the main strands of Pauls theologizingall the while keeping in mind the particular context of frst-
century Christianity. Filled with full-color images and maps, charts, and questions for further study and discussion, Tinking through
Paul is both engaging and easy-to-follow, making it the perfect choice for classrooms and for interested readers.

Four Views on the Role of Works
at the Final Judgment
ALANP.STANLEY,GENERALEDITOR
Four Views on the Role of Works at the Final Judgment takes up the age-old question: What must I
do to be saved? Four leading scholars discuss the degree to which ones works are considered at
the fnal judgment.

Contributors and views include:
Robert N. Wilkin: Works will determine rewards but not salvationAt the Judgment Seat of
Christ each believer will be judged by Christ to determine his eternal rewards, but he remains
eternally secure even if the judgment reveals he failed to persevere in good works (or in faith).
Tomas R. Schreiner: Works will provide evidence that one actually has been savedAt the fnal
judgment works provide the necessary condition, though not the ground for fnal salvation, in
that they provide evidence as to whether one has actually trusted in Jesus Christ.
James D. G. Dunn: Works will provide the criterion by which Christ will determine the eternal
destiny of his peopleSince Paul, Jesus, and the New Testament writers hold together
justifcation by faith and not by works with judgment according to works, we should not fall
into the trap of playing one of against the other or blending them in a way that diminishes the
force of each.
Michael P. Barber: Works will merit eternal lifeAt the fnal judgment, good works will be
rewarded with eternal salvation. However, these good works will be meritorious not apart from
Christ but precisely because of the union of the believer with him.
ALANP.STANLEY (PhD, Dallas Teological Seminary) is lecturer in biblical studies at Crossway
College, Brisbane, Australia.

ROBERTN.WILKIN (PhD, Dallas Teological Seminary) is president and founder of Grace

Biblical Theology for Life
Christians in an Age of Wealth
^Blbllcal1beologyofStewarusbl
CRAIGL.BLOMBERG
In Christians in an Age of Wealth, Craig L. Blomberg asks tough questions about the place and
purpose of wealth and material possessions. Tis book investigates the Bibles many references to
material wealth, work, poverty, and generosity, and applies these fndings specifcally to the Christian
church. Readers will be challenged to think holistically about the blessings of prosperity and the
associated responsibility to look after the poor.
Blomberg outlines biblical passages that teach about the goodness of wealth, as God originally
designed it, and the ways in which material blessing can function properly. Yet both the Old Testament
and the New Testament also warn against the dangers that loving ones own wealth or coveting
anothers can generate. Te key, Blomberg explains, is giving generously, even sacrifcially, to those in
need. By doing so, Christians participate in Gods original good design for abundance and demonstrate
the active love of Christ. Rather than pitting generous living against gospel proclamation, Blomberg
demonstrates that each is incomplete without the other.
CRAIG L. BLOMBERG (PhD, University of Aberdeen, Scotland) is distinguished professor of New
Testament at Denver Seminary. He is the author, coauthor, or coeditor of ffteen books and more than
eighty articles in journals or multi-author works.

Understanding Biblical Theology
^Comarlsonof1beoryanuractlce
EDWARDW.KLINKIIIANDDARIANR.LOCKETT
The popularity of biblical theology shows no signs of abating, but the variety of approaches to the
subject can be confusing and daunting. Klink and Lockett provide a landscape for understanding the
discipline by setting forth five different approaches to biblical theology. This much-needed work fills
a large gap and will be received gratefully by both professors and students.
THOMASR.SCHREINER, The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary
Understanding Biblical Teology examines the fve major schools of thought considered biblical
theology, giving a brief developmental history and exploring one contemporary scholar who
champions each method. Using a spectrum between history and theology, each of fve types of
biblical theology are identifed as either more theological or more historical in concern and
practice. A conclusion suggests how any student of the Bible can learn from these approaches.

n his sixth and final will Herod designated Archelaus as
king of Idumea, Judea, and Samaria; Antipas as ruler in
Galilee and Perea; and Philip as governor of the lands
northeast of the Sea of Galilee. However, the Romans did not
give Archelaus the title of king but rather ethnarch (mean-
ing ruler of the nation). Archelauss ten-year rule (4 BCAD
6) was brutal. It is little wonder that when Mary, Joseph, and
the baby Jesus returned from Egypt, they avoided returning to
Judea, for they heard that Archelaus was ruling in place of his
father (Matt 2:1923). Instead, they proceeded to Galilee and
settled in the village of Nazareth.
Herod Antipas (4 BCAD39) ruled over both Galilee and
Perea. Each of these territories had a large number of Jews. The
area north of the Sea of Galilee was higher in elevation and was
called Upper Galilee. To the south, Lower Galilee was much
more open to outside influence, and its broad, spacious valleys
provided good land for growing grain crops.
As Jesus was growing up, Antipas was constructing his
new capital at Sepphoris (3 BCAD 10), which may have had
a population of 5,000. This city overlooked valuable farmland

In Egypt, the Twelfth Dynasty, in the period known as
the Middle Kingdom, was a time of great prosperity. Pyra-
mids were again being built, administrative and bureaucratic
structures were in place, and the arts and letters flourished;
indeed, this was the classical period of Egyptian literature.
Commercial contacts with the Levant, especially with Byblos,
were common.
Egyptian contact with the Levant is reflected in the Story
of Sinuhe (ANET, 1823), a tale of an Egyptian who fled from
Egypt to the Levant. He first journeyed to Byblos but then

Nile occurred, and death and destruction were
everywhere.
When Abram returned to Canaan, he spent
most of his time in the Negev, with occasional
trips to the Hill Country of Judah and Ephraim.
The patriarchs raised sheep and goats and grew
graincrops (see, e.g., Gen13:2, 57; 24:35; 26:12).
Wells provided water for their families and flocks,
thoughthe control of these water sources was often
disputed. Both Abraham and Isaac had conflicts
with the king of Gerar over wells located between
Gerar and Beersheba (Gen 21:25; 26:1233).
The attempt of Abram and his clan to live
in the Bethel/Ai region (Gen 13) seems to have
been somewhat problematic, possibly because
there was not enough grazing land in the area
or because the Canaanites and Perizzites were
hostile (13:7). Lot, Abrams nephew, chose to
leave the hill country and settle in Sodom, while
Abram remained where he was.
The patriarchs visited many places in
Canaan. On one of the mountains in the region

Quality Research Papers

NANCYJEANVYHMEISTERWITHTERRYDWAINROBERTSON
This updated third edition of Quality Research Papersfast becoming a standard reference textbook
for writing research papers in the fields of religion and theologygives improvements and added
material for such things as the expanding field of online research and doing church-related research
in a professional manner.
Because so many new developments have taken place in the field of research, especially in terms
of electronic research, this handy reference explores the ways to do both traditional research and
research on the Internet, including how to document such research.
Quality Research Papers, Third Edition offers great opportunities to students today, especially in
distance learning situations, to determine which resources can be used and which should be rejected.
For this reason Nancy Vyhmeister brought in Terry Robertson, seminary librarian at Andrews
University, who teaches the masters level research course at the seminary. His expertise in library,
computers, and the Internet are invaluable to the book.
In addition to substantial current information on electronic resources and online research, this third
edition preserves all of the features of the original editions, now presented in a newly revised, more
logical order.
NANCY JEAN VYHMEISTER (EdD, Andrews University) has fifty years of experience in
teaching future pastors and professors not only in the United States but throughout the
world. She continues to have a global ministry in her retirement years. She has authored
several books, both in Spanish and English, including a Greek grammar book for Spanish-
speaking students. She was editor of Women in Ministry: Biblical and Historical Perspectives.

TERRY DWAIN ROBERTSON (MLS, Indiana University-Bloomington) is seminary librarian at
Andrews University and teaches the research methods course at the seminary.

KEY FEATURES AND DISTINCTIVES
A graphical display of each passage enables the reader to grasp quickly and accurately the main idea of the text, its development, and supporting ideas.

Identification and discussion of the main ideas of each passage occur in the graphical display, the introduction to the passage, and the Theology in
Application section. Few other series do this consistently.
Responsible interaction with the Greek text ensures that the commentary remains understandable to pastors, teachers, and students.
Though certainly familiar with the best scholarly literature on their respective book, contributors only present the most important findings when appro-

Bible Commentary
Emphasizing the historical distance between the contexts of the biblical world and contem-
porary culture, Zondervans highly anticipated The Story of God Bible Commentary series pro-
vides pastors, students, Sunday school teachers, and small group leaders with a clear and
compelling exposition of the biblical text in the context of the Bibles overarching story.
Offering a new type of application commentary for todays context, The Story of God Bible
Commentary series explains and illuminates Scripture as Gods Story, with each biblical text
examined as embedded in its canonical and historical setting, in order to foster discernment
in living the story faithfully and creatively with and for the church in the 21st century.

THEOLOGY
Michael Bird has written a clear and accessible guide to Christian
theology built around the central theme of the Gospel. He combines
the Biblical texts with frequent references to contemporary theolo-
gians in order to illustrate the continuing relevance of the Word of
God for us today. Evangelical readers will appreciate the concise
but comprehensive exposition of the great truths of salvation and
students will benefit from the leads given in each chapter to more
specialized works on particular subjects.
GERALD BRAY, Beeson Divinity School
It is rare for a biblical scholar to produce a systematic theology of
the breadth and depth of this book. Robustly biblical, doxological,
and woven through the breadth of the evangelical ecclesial tradi-
tions, this theology takes no shortcuts in offering an evangelical
theology that has everything to do with the gospel.
JASON S. SEXTON, USCs Center for Religion & Civic Culture
Unique among the current crop of one-volume systematic theologies. While championing the expositional realities of the biblical
text, Bird also keeps a keen eye toward the creedal inheritance of the church and the contributions of the theological tradition.
Broadly Reformed and self-consciously evangelical, Birds accessible and conversational style will be sure to win him a wide read-
ing among students, pastors and teachers.

Evangelical Teology is a systematic theology written from the perspective of a biblical scholar. Michael F. Bird contends that the
center, unity, and boundary of the evangelical faith is the evangel (i.e. gospel), as opposed to things like justifcation by faith or
inerrancy. In his unique approach, the evangel is the epicenter and unifying thread in evangelical theology and the hermeneutical
lens through which the various subfelds of theology need to be understood.
Using the gospel as a theological leitmotifan approach to Christian doctrine that begins with the gospel and sees each locus
through the lens of the gospelthis text presents an authentically evangelical theology, as opposed to a traditional systematic
theology written by an evangelical theologian.
According to the author, theology is the drama of gospelizingperforming and living out the gospel in the theatre of Christian life.
Te text features tables, sidebars, and questions for discussion. Te end of every part includes a What to Take Home section that
gives students a run-down on what they need to know. And since reading theology can often be dry and cerebral, the author applies
his unique sense of humor in occasional Comic Belief sections so that students may enjoy their learning experience through some
theological humor added for good measure.

Two Views on the Doctrine of the Trinity
JASONS.SEXTON,GENERALEDITOR
After a sustained drought of trinitarian engagement, the doctrine of the Trinity has increasingly resurged
to the forefront of the evangelical confession. Te second half of the twentieth century, however, saw a
diferent kind of trinitarian theology developing, giving way to what has commonly been referred to as the
social Trinity.
Socialor better, relationaltrinitarianism has garnered a steady reaction from those holding to a
classical doctrine of the Trinity, prompting a more careful and thorough re-reading of sources and bringing
about not only a much more coherent view of early trinitarian development but also a strong critique
of relational trinitarian oferings. Yet confusion remains. As evangelicals get better at articulating the
doctrine of the Trinity, and as the current and next generation of believers in various Christian traditions
seek to be more trinitarian, the way forward for trinitarian theology has to choose between the relational
and classical model, both being legitimate options.
In this volume, leading contributorsone evangelical and one mainline/Catholic representing each
viewestablish their models and approaches to the doctrine of the Trinity, each highlighting the strengths
of his view in order to argue how it best refects the orthodox perspective. To facilitate a genuine debate and
to make sure that the key issues are teased out, each contributor addresses the same questions regarding
their trinitarian methodology, doctrine, and its implications.

Five Views on Biblical Inerrancy
J.MERRICKANDSTEPHENM.GARRETT,GENERALEDITORS
Tere is little doubt that the inerrancy of the Bible is a current and often contentious topic among
evangelicals. Five Views on Biblical Inerrancy represents a timely contribution by showcasing the
spectrum of evangelical positions on inerrancy, and facilitating understanding of these perspectives,
particularly where and why they diverge.

Te present context and the viability and relevance for the contemporary evangelical
Christian witness
Whether and to what extent Scripture teaches its own inerrancy
Te positions assumed/implied understandings of the nature of Scripture, God, and truth

Christology, Ancient and Modern
LxloratlonslnConstructlveDogmatlcs
OLIVERD.CRISPANDFREDSANDERS,EDITORS
Christology was the central doctrine articulated by the early church councils, and it remains
the subject of vigorous theological investigation today. Te doctrine of Christ is a feld of broad
ecumenical convergence, inviting theologians from all denominational settings to fruitful
collaborative exploration. In the contemporary setting, it is especially crucial for theologians
to investigate the scriptural witness afresh, to retrieve classical criteria and categories from
the tradition, and to consider the generative pressure of soteriology for Christology proper.
Te frst annual Los Angeles Teology Conference sought to make a positive contribution to
contemporary dogmatics in intentional engagement with the Christian tradition. Christology,
Ancient and Modern brings together conference proceedings, surveying the feld and articulating
the sources, norms, and criteria for constructive theological work in Christology.

The Crucif ied King
^tonementanuKlnguomlnBlbllcalanuSystematlc1beology
JEREMYR.TREAT
It is one thing to plead for the integration of biblical and systematic theology (among other things);
quite another to actually do it. . . . [Treats] arguments are deeply and widely informed, the conclusions
range from provocative to elating.
from the foreword by MICHAEL S. HORTON, Westminster Seminary California
Te kingdom of God and the atonement are two of the most important themes in all of Scripture.
Tragically, theologians have often either set the two at odds or focused on one to the complete
neglect of the other.
In Te Crucifed King, Jeremy Treat demonstrates that Scripture presents a mutually enriching
relationship between the kingdom and atonement that draws signifcantly from the story of Israel
and culminates in the crucifxion of Christ the king. As Israels Messiah, he holds together the
kingdom and the cross by bringing Gods reign on earth through his atoning death. Te kingdom is
the ultimate goal of the cross, and the cross is the means by which the kingdom comes. Jesus death
is not the failure of his messianic ministry, nor simply the prelude to his royal glory, but is the apex
of his kingdom mission. Te cross is the throne from which he rules and establishes his kingdom.
Using a holistic approach that brings together the insights of biblical and systematic theology,
this book demonstrates not only that the kingdom and the cross are inseparable, but how they are
integrated in Scripture and theology.

Pilgrim Theology

MICHAELHORTON
Serving as a well-trained guide, Michael Horton offers a stunningly accessible tour of the
classic Reformed landscape. Using the markers of drama, doctrine, doxology, and disciple-
ship, Pilgrim Theology provides a compass to lead the thoughtful reader on a journey to
better understand their faith, history, and why it all matters. A wonderful and much-needed
resource that will serve us all for years to come.
KELLY M. KAPIC, Covenant College
Te 2011 award-winning publication Te Christian Faith garnered wide praise as a thorough,
well-informed treatment of the philosophical foundations of Christian theology, the classical
elements of systematic theology, and exegesis of relevant biblical texts. Pilgrim Teology distills
the distinctive benefts of this approach into a more accessible introduction designed for
classroom and group study.
In this book, Michael Horton guides readers through a preliminary exploration of Christian
theology in a Reformed key. Horton reviews the biblical passages that give rise to a particular
doctrine in addition to surveying past and present interpretations. Also included are sidebars
showing the key distinctions readers need to grasp on a particular subject, helpful charts and
tables illuminating exegetical and historical topics, and questions at the end of each chapter.
More than simply an abridgment of The Christian Faith, this new text has been
rewritten for a new and wider audience. Pilgrim Theology is an ideal text for teaching
theology to undergraduate students.
MICHAELHORTON (PhD, University of Coventry and Wyclife Hall, Oxford) is the J. Gresham
Machen Professor of Systematic Teology and Apologetics at Westminster Seminary California.

John Wesleys Teachings is the frst systematic exposition of John
Wesleys theology that encompasses all of his writings. In everyday
modern English, Oden clarifes Wesleys explicit intent and
communicates his meaning clearly to a contemporary audience.
Both lay and professional readers will fnd this series useful for
devotional reading, moral refection, sermon preparation, and
for referencing Wesleys opinions on a broad range of pressing issues
of contemporary society. Tis series of four volumes introduces Wesleys
thought on the basic tenets of Christian teaching: God and
providence (volume 1), Christ and salvation (volume 2), the practice
of pastoral care (volume 3), and issues of ethics and society (volume 4).

Doing the Right Thing
MallngMoralCbolceslnaWorlulullofOtlons
SCOTTB.RAE
In Doing the Right Ting, author Scott B. Rae proposes that there is such a thing as moral
truth, that it can be known, and that it can be put into practice.
Looking specifcally at the areas of medicine, the marketplace, and public life, Rae shows
how foundational ethical principles can guide readers into moral day-to-day decisions.
Informed by Scripture and calling for a renewed understanding of the importance of the
Christian faith in moral training, Doing the Right Ting presents a case for cultivated virtue
that can bring about both better lives and a better society.
Doing the Right Ting is published in cooperation with the Chuck Colson Center for
Christian Worldview and completes Colsons last passion project, a DVD study also
entitled Doing the Right Ting.
SCOTT B. RAE (PhD, University of Southern California) is dean of faculty and professor of
Christian ethics at Talbot School of Teology, Biola University in La Mirada, California.

GAILYNVANRHEENEN
In this second edition of Missions, long-time missionary Gailyn Van Rheenen revises and
updates his classic text on the foundational issues of Christian missions. According to Van
Rheenen, In a rapidly changing world, the central missionary vision of the church must be
constantly renewed, lest its foundations become lost in the confusion of change or its practices
trapped in missionary models of the past.
Van Rheenen helps renew the missionary vision by discussing areas such as:
The history of Christian mission, and how it affects where people are today
Spiritual formation for Gods mission
Missionary cycle
Cross-cultural communication
The character and calling of missionaries
Types of missionaries
Church maturation
Selecting mission fields
The role of money in missions
Four levels of involvement in missions
Accessible to students, practitioners, and laypeople alike, Missions provides a primary go-to
resource for understanding and becoming involved in the dynamic activity of world missions.
GAILYNVANRHEENEN(PhD, Trinity Evangelical Divinity School) is director of the church-planting
ministry Mission Alive (www.missionalive.org), adjunct professor of missions at Abilene Christian
University, and former missionary to East Africa. His website is www.missiology.org.

LEONARD SWEET
In this groundbreaking resource, bestselling author Len Sweet introduces readers to what he
terms a transductive epistemology: a new model for understanding and communicating truth
that will profoundly affect the way the church communicates to a new generation. Sweet argues
that knowing is no longer simply a linear movement from propositions (deduction) or toward
propositions (induction). He shows why older attempts that preach deductively are no longer
effective today, yet neither are inductive methods where people are encouraged to come to their
own conclusions.
Sweet offers an alternative to both approaches, showing us how to communicate the Bible as Gods
storybook, his handiworkand not just a rulebook of dos and donts or a handbook for living.
He challenges long-held assumptions about communicating the Bible, offering a fresh paradigm for
preaching and teaching in the 21st century church.
LEONARD SWEET (PhD, University of Rochester) holds the E. Stanley Jones chair at Drew University.
Founder and president of SpiritVenture Ministries, he also serves as a distinguished visiting professor at
George Fox University, and he is the chief writer for preachingplus.com. Sweet is a popular speaker and
has written numerous books, including Jesus Drives Me Crazy, SoulTsunami, SoulSalsa, Carpe Maana,
and (with Brian McLaren and Jerry Haselmeyer) A Is for Abductive: Te Language of the Emerging Church.
