Laurel Hill Elementary School PTA

Chess Club
NO CHESS KNOWLEDGE NEEDED!!!
Wednesday mornings - POD 8:00 am 9:00 am
Winter Session: February 5th March 26, 2014

For students in Grades 2-6

Instructors from Snows Chess Academy teach chess to children as a means of improving both their academic and social skills. Chess teaches responsibility, discipline, critical thinking and problem-solving skills. Chess players learn to make the most of their opportunities and how to turn a bad situation to their advantage. They learn not to make excuses for their set-backs, and to win and lose graciously. Rules are taught to beginners, and strategy to advanced players. The club philosophy places a low priority on winning. Instead, the focus is on improving ones skills. Good sportsmanship is the key to having fun! Students will also receive information about events and tournaments throughout the D.C. Metro area. Cost for the Chess Club is $ 60.00 for the 8-week session. If your child would like to participate, complete the registration form and return it to your childs teacher with a check for the registration fee by Thursday, January 23rd, 2014. Questions? Contact Rachana Garg at 703-599-2110 or rachom@hotmail.com

There will be no Chess Club if Fairfax County schools are closed due to inclement weather.

Chess Club Policies and Registration Form Return by Thursday, January 23, 2014
Students CANNOT be dropped off before 7:55 a.m.: There are no provisions for supervising children before 7:55 a.m., and neither the Laurel Hill Elementary PTA nor the school can assume responsibility for them. Students will be supervised in the Cafeteria by parent volunteers from the time the Chess Club begins until they are allowed to go to their classrooms at 9:00 a.m. If school opening is delayed for any reason, the Chess Club will not meet on that day. There is no food consumption during class. Students MUST be on time: It is important that students arrive on time on a regular basis. Children who regularly arrive late may be asked to withdraw from the Club without a refund. The LHES PTA reserves the option of requiring the withdrawal without a refund of any child whose inappropriate behavior prevents the class from proceeding constructively despite the efforts of the instructors or parent volunteers. Parents are asked to volunteer for one week during each session to serve as a Parent Volunteer: It is required that we have two additional parent volunteers to assist the instructor each week. Please indicate any dates you are not available to volunteer below. Parents will be notified of their assigned date to serve as a volunteer the week prior to the start of the Winter Session. A parent volunteer instructional guide will be provided. Parent volunteers are expected to arrive on the morning of their assigned week by 7:50 a.m. Parent volunteers will be used to set up and put away the chess sets, check children in when they first arrive, escort children who may need to leave the cafeteria, and assist in emergency situations. Parents will not be teaching or playing chess. Parent volunteers may depart at 9:05 a.m. ************************************************************************************************************************************ ************************************************************************************************************************************ Completed registration forms must be received in the school office with a check payable to LHES PTA in the amount of $85. Full payment is required for registration. Refunds are not given after registration unless the session is cancelled. Personal checks with valid identification (name, address, and phone number on the check) are accepted. If your check is returned NSF, it may be re-presented electronically, and you will be assessed a processing fee of $20 - $30, or the maximum amount allowed by law. The check writer is also responsible for all other check recovery costs, including all attorneys fees, court costs and taxes.
