LIVERPOOL JOHN MOORES UNIVERSITY SCHOOL OF THE BUILT ENVIRONMENT

6102BEUG ADVANCED STRUCTURAL DESIGN Coursework: A New Workshop and Office

Clients Requirements 1. The client requires a new workshop and office building to be located on part of a large site in a light industrial area. See figure 1. The client has a strong preference for the use of steel and composite concrete elements where possible. As much natural lighting as possible is required in the office and workshop. 2. The ground floor workshop area is to provide a 24 m by 22 m area with no internal columns. Stairs locations are as shown in figure 1. A 15.5 m wide office area is required at first floor, running along the entire length of the building. 3. Clear headroom of 4.6m is required for the workshop and 2.84 m for the office. No part of the structure shall be higher than 10 m above the ground level. 4. Perimeter columns shall not be spaced closer than 4m (centre to centre) Variable Actions (Imposed loading) 5. Roof 1.25 kN/m2 Office floor 4.0 kN/m2 Workshop ground floor 21.0 kN/m2 Imposed loadings include allowance for finishes, services and partitions. Site Conditions 6. The site for the workshop is level and open. 7. Basic wind speed is 50 m/s based on a 3 second gust; the equivalent mean hourly wind speed is 25 m/s. 8. Ground conditions Ground level-1.5 m Top soil and very soft silty clay Below 1.5 m Limestone, allowable bearing pressure 300kN/m2 The highest recorded ground water level is 6 m below ground level.

Omit from consideration 9. Design of the access stairs to the office, which are non structural and shall not be used to provide lateral stability to the building. Also ignore wind actions Project Tasks: Section 1 (35 marks) Prepare a design appraisal with appropriate sketches indicating two viable structural solutions for the proposed scheme. Indicate clearly the; functional framing, load transfer and stability aspects of each scheme and justify the reasons for your preferred solution .

Section 2 (65 marks) For the solution recommended in section 1: a. Using EC3 & EC4, prepare sufficient specifications and design calculations to establish the size of the steel deck and the laterally restrained composite steel beams supporting the office building. Illustrate your answer where appropriate with neat annotated diagrams and sketches. Make sure your design satisfies the required capacity checks and requirements of the EC3 &EC4 codes. (45 marks)

b. Prepare general arrangement plans, sections and elevations to show the dimensions, and layout of the structural elements for construction purposes. (20 marks)

Submission date: 25 February 2014, on a paper format and submit at the Students Zone, Avril Robarts LRC, Transaction Desk.

Marking criteria
Section 1 35% Prepare a design appraisal with appropriate sketches indicating two viable structural solutions for the proposed scheme. Indicate clearly the; functional framing, load transfer and stability aspects of each scheme and justify the reasons for your preferred solution. 20% The design concepts are developed in a clear and professional manner using the project brief prepared. Your design is clearly justified on your design sheets and is a successful and workable

solution to the brief in terms of the briefing criteria. 10% The 2D drawings are presented to professional industry standard using your preferred CAD package. Professional & high quality hand drawings are acceptable. 5% Where appropriate show the details of references and the report is well written with minimal spelling and grammatical errors. Section 2 (a) 45% (a) For the selected structural solution in 1 above, use EC3 & EC4 prepare sufficient specifications and design calculations to establish the size of the steel deck, shear connectors and the laterally restrained composite steel beams supporting the office building. Illustrate your answer where appropriate with neat annotated diagrams and sketches. (b) Make sure your design satisfies the required capacity checks and other requirements of the EC3 & EC4 codes of practice. 15% The loads and actions are clearly calculated, with full details of the area carried by each element supported by the composite beams. 20% Use EC3 & EC4. Provide appropriate calculations to show that your design satisfies the codes of practises requirements at both construction and services stages. Identifying issues like details of cross-section, cross-section classification, size and details of; profiled steel decking, shear connectors, capacity checks at construction. Moment of resistance, shear resistance and deflection at ultimate limit state. 10% Provide details of the final layout of the steel composite section, including cross sections and elevations and make sure your design satisfies the necessary requirements of the EC3, EC4 and building regulations. See relevant reference for completing your calculations and presenting your findings. Section 2 (b) 20% (b) Prepare general arrangement plans, sections and elevations to show the dimensions, and layout of the structural elements for the solution recommended for construction purposes. The drawings are presented to professional industry standard as for design drawings using your preferred CAD package. Search for relevant reference for completing this section and presenting your findings. Professional & high quality hand drawings are acceptable.
