Experiment 1: Identification of Organic Compounds using UV-Vis and IR Spectroscopy The purpose of this experiment is to provide you with

an opportunity to implement the skills you have gained from the first two chapters of the Analytical Chemistry for Engineers course. In this experiment you will identify 12 compounds (A-L) using your knowledge of UV-Vis and IR spectroscopy. The following are a list of possible compounds:
OH
OH
O O

O
OH

O H2N NH2
O

Br

OH
O OH

O HO O O HO OH

OH O O

The following information will be useful in identifying the compounds:

PCC A CH2Cl2 B H2SO4 CrO3 C

+C
CH3Cl

HCl D

KMnO4 H I H2O

G FeCl3

+J

NaH
K THF

You are expected to go to the Analytical Laboratory and acquire the experimental procedure for using the UV-Vis and IR Spectrometers and submit a copy of the procedure to your lecturer prior to performing the experiments. You must submit a lab report, which is composed of an abstract, introduction, theory, procedure, results, discussion, conclusion and references to your lecturer one week after performing your experiment. In your results section you are expected to identify compounds A-L and, name them and justify your identification using the information from the experiments and the following data: Compound B UV-vis: IR: Compound E UV-vis: IR: Compound F: UV-vis: IR: Compound G: UV-vis: IR: Compound H: UV-vis: IR: Compound J: Compound L: IR: IR: max = 289 1730 cm-1 max = <210, 220 and 273 2950 and 1685 cm-1 max = <220 log10 = >3.2 log10 = >4, 3.86 and 2.86 log10 = 1.19

3430 and 1592 cm-1 max = 178 log10 = 4.84

3037 and 1480 cm-1 max = 260 log10 = 243

3033, 1501 and 730 cm-1 956 cm-1 2900 and 1463 cm-1
