What is Fatigue?

Customer Training Material

Fatigue damage is the initiation and/or growth of a crack under fluctuating loading
component seems to lose strength after multiple load applications
appears to get tired, hence the name fatigue

cracks are caused by cyclic plastic deformation in localized areas failures occur at stress levels insufficient to cause failure in a single application

Why Assess Fatigue?

Customer Training Material

Almost all structural components are subjected to some type of repeated or varying loading Difficult to detect progressive deterioration during fatigue process
damage is cumulative and unrecoverable catastrophic failures can occur without warning

1982 Battelle study estimated that between 80-90% of all structural failures have a fatigue mechanism
estimated annual cost in the US was $1.5B
30 years ago!

more recent cost estimates are in the order of $400B annually

Example of Fatigue Failure

de Havilland Comet - first jet airliner (1949)
flew higher than previous planes suffered two tragic in-flight fatigue failures

Customer Training Material

cracks initiated at sharp corners and propagated to failure failure of pressurized fuselage caused total structural collapse
68 people killed
