Topic:
I. General Information:
Topic: Dispersion in different fiber types Name: Ahmad Assere (119) Date: 16/03/2014
2. Curriculum Analysis:
The lesson is based on the curriculum of the TVTC Department: Communication Techniques Major: Telecommunication Course title: Transmission Lines Optical Fiber This course covers the principle of operation and types of transmission lines optical fibers and their technical specifications. Also covered are methods of connecting optical fibers, transmission characteristics of optical fibers, light sources and photo detectors, fiber optic measurements and testing. Time: The credit hours 6.Contact hours in week, 4 hours for lecture and 2 hours for practice. COM 240

3.Objective:
a. General learning objective:
The trainees:
1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. Encouraged to help each other. (Affective) Ask questions about the topic. (Affective) Write clearly on the whiteboard. (Psychomotor) Interact with the teacher. (Affective) Cooperate and work together. (Affective) Summarize a lesson. (Cognitive)
The trainees:
1. 2. 3. 4. 5. Define what is dispersion (Cognitive) Realize types of loss in optical fiber. (Cognitive ) Define what is dispersion in optical fiber (Cognitive) Realize types of dispersion in optical fiber . (Cognitive ) Draw a Sketch for types of dispersion in optical fiber . (Psychomotor)
4.Didactic Analysis:
Opening: Motivate the trainees by asking some (open question) to them about the lesson , and put some pictures or video to linked and make it related for my lesson.
Body: - I will start my lesson by asking about optical fiber the question will be" what are you know about optical fiber" Then, I will get the answers from the students and compare it with the answer that I have in lecture. In my opinion that will make the students active . -Then I will ask them about the reasons for the loss in fiber optic and I'm sure that most of the students have prior knowledge about the fiber optic. - I will compare the answers with the lecture and tell the student that we will focus on dispersion which is one of the reasons for the loss in fiber. Then I will discuss with them what is dispersion and types of dispersion. - After discussing the dispersion and types of dispersion I will explain to them the first type of dispersion and the students will discuss together the second and third type in group work, Then the students should write the result on the whiteboard, The results should be explained to the material dispersion and waveguide dispersion and drawing the sketch for them .
Closing: I will asked trainees what we learned in this lesson. I will give them short review about main ideas in lesson.
5.Content Analyses:
The various losses in the cable are due to: - Absorption - Scattering - Dispersion - Bending
What is Optical Fiber Dispersion: Dispersion is the spreading out of a light pulse in time as it propagates down the fiber. Dispersion in optical fiber: Dispersion in optical fiber includes model dispersion, material dispersion and waveguide dispersion.
Model Dispersion in Multimode Fibers: Multimode fibers can guide many different light modes since they have much larger core size. Each mode enters the fiber at a different angle and thus travels at different paths in the fiber.
Since each mode ray travels a different distance as it propagates, the ray arrive at different times at the fiber output. So the light pulse spreads out in time which can cause signal overlapping so seriously that you cannot distinguish them any more..
Model dispersion is not a problem in single mode fibers since there is only one mode that can travel in the fiber.
( Figure 1)
Material Dispersion Also known as spectral dispersion or chromatic dispersion. Results because of variation due to Refractive Index of core as a function of wavelength, because of which pulse spreading occurs even when different wavelengths follow the same path. Waveguide Dispersion Waveguide Dispersion: Whenever any optical signal is passed through the optical fiber, practically 80% of optical power is confined to core & rest 20% optical power into cladding. Since fiber cladding has lower refractive index than fiber core, light ray that travels in the cladding travels faster than that in the core.
