The implementation of policy of using endek as uniform for students of SMA Negeri 1 Denpasar BACKGROUND SMA Negeri 1 Denpasar

is a public school which is located in the center of capital city of Denpasar. SMANSA, as how we usually call it, is well-known for its diverse aspects of education and culture. Denpasar as the capital city of Bali is painted as the face of Bali. It has to represent the multicultural life of Balinese people as a whole to the country, or in a bigger picture, to the world. Therefore, Denpasar is currently promoting the program of using endek in every governmental institution. This program then started to expand to every public school in Denpasar area. One of its purpose is to enhance the existence of Bali through its unique, one-of-a-kind type of clothing, endek. As part of active participation from SMANSA, weve started using endek as uniform since 2013 for all of the students. Endek is a handmade Balinese traditional piece of clothing. All process of its production, starting from colouring and making the pattern are all manual, without machine. Endek is frequently used during traditional ritual in many big temples in Bali. During the old days, about 18th-19th century, endek was a symbol of social status. It was used only by the royal families or wealthy people. The pattern was also specially made. Nowadays, it is usual to see endek used as uniform by Balinese governmental workers. The first areas to use it were Klungkung, Gianyar, and Karangasem, but now every region of Bali is using it proudly. REASON Pro: 1. Indonesia has a large variety of cultures. Each and every province has its own unique culture which makes them stand out among other areas in Indonesia. Bali as a part of Indonesia has made itself known to the world through its culture, custom, and tradition. As part of those tremendous cultural aspects, we have endek, which is a very unique type of clothing. 2. Endek can be a potential product to strengthen local economy. Endek is not only famous in national scope, but also to international countries. Using endek as everyday clothing can help promoting it to the people. 3. It is an easy way to increase the awareness of young generation to participate in sustaining cultural legacy. In general, many youngsters think that traditional Balinese culture is something old or boring. By using the various colours and patterns of endek as school uniform, we hope that young people will get familiarized with endek, thus they will take part in maintaining traditional culture. Contra: 1. In SMA Negeri 1 Denpasar specifically, the program of using endek as school uniform was started from 2013. If the program was to be implemented to every students, the third year students would only get to use it for a short term. It resulted in rejection from them, cause it

would only be a waste of money. The school representative then allow them to be excluded from the program. But then the second year student also protested using the same reason. They then talked to the teachers, and they granted their wish. In the end, only the freshmen use endek as school uniform. 2. There is also an argument about the importance to maintain the basic and nationally used uniform, which is the combination of white shirt and grey skirt/trousers. It was said that the uniform mentioned before is the common and widely used by high school students in Indonesia.

EVIDENCE 1. Ever since 2012, SMA Negeri 4 Denpasar or FOURSMA had been holding an event called fashion day. It was an event to find the proper pattern and style for the students new uniform. It was held on every Friday. During the day of the event, the students would wear national costumes with various materials, such as endek, songket, or batik. The purpose was to compare the variety of colours and designs, from which the official school uniform would be chosen. In the end, the decision fell upon endek to be used as student uniform. Artha Wibawa (head of student council) said, endek is very appropriate to use as student uniform since it was cultural legacy of Bali. Moreover, using endek in everyday living can promote local product in national and international scope. 2. SMP Negeri 1 Denpasar is one of the first schools that implement the curriculum of 2013. Its headmaster, AA Gd Rimbya said that curriculum of 2013 is the perfection of the previous year one, the difference lies upon its emphasis in manners and character (tata krama and budi pekerti) subject. The underlying reason is that young generation nowadays tend to lose their character and cultural interest. Through this curriculum, it is expected that we can create a generation with awareness to sustaining cultural legacy. The other purpose is to increase local economy through promoting local product. CONCLUSION: Endek is a handmade Balinese traditional type of clothing which is widely known to the country and the world. We have to take part in maintaining the existence of it as a cultural legacy. The program of using endek as office or school uniform has been started in Bali started from the year of 2012. Denpasar as the capital city of Bali also take part in this program. SMA Negeri 1 Denpasar has also started to implement the program since 2013. There are some different opinions regarding this program. Some thought that it was good to take part in maintaining the Balinese cultural legacy as the young generation of Bali. But specifically in SMA Negeri 1 Denpasar, there are opinion that it would be a waste of money if the program was to be implemented to third year students, because they would use it for a really short term.
