Letter ! Hello Mr. Michael Harvey,! Im interested in the position of Choral Music Teacher at Jarvis Collegiate Institute. ! Im interested because I have a passion for teaching and a passion for music. I am highly qualied in my eld of study and am equipped with the skills and tools to help educate high school students. Developing creativity and communication skills, and enabling students to achieve their goals is what I set out to do as a music educator, and I love to do it.! My time at University of Torontos Faculty of Music and the Ontario Institute for Studies in Education (OISE) has thoroughly prepared me for the demands of high school teaching. I have completed a 7-week practicum at Etobicoke Collegiate Institute teaching their Grade 10 Guitar, Grade 9-10 Vocal, Grade 11-12 Vocal, and Music Theatre Class and have also completed a 4-week practicum at Jarvis teaching Grade 10 Academic and Applied History and Grade 11 World History. Beyond theses practicums, I have logged hundreds of volunteer hours in other schools and in various di$erent capacities across the GTA and in the Niagara Region.! My education studies at OISE have also given me a deep understanding of connecting theory and practice. There are many fancy ways and theories for articulating a teaching philosophy, but for me, teaching e$ectively requires e$ective assessment and evaluation: diagnose what students know; teach and learn using informed and researched methods; use peer-assessment, self-reection, and continuous teacher feedback; and lastly, evaluate. Questioning students well and enabling them to masterfully articulate their answers is extremely important for me. Creating purposeful and practical assignments and projects that are taught through purposeful and practical lessons and instruction, as experientially as possible, is also extremely important for me. All of these things above in a course that has been designed with end in mind and with clear educational objectives is my ideal.! My time volunteering at Jarvis with Mary Moynihan, ECL, has given me a window into this schools diversity and culture I would love to be a part of what is going on. ! Moreover, my interest in technology, computers, and music combined, is something that sets me apart from many. Though I am a conductor, composer, and performer of music, I also enjoy recording, producing, and publishing content online, as well as blogging, and am skilled in using all forms of computer software and online resources.! My teaching experiences thus far with associate teachers and all of my students have been engaging, informative, and fun. ! I hope to bring an energy and passion for music and for learning into your school. ! Jordan Duerrstein!
