The Lions Roar
Presidents
Message. . .
I`m pleased to hear from Lions
Tawnya, Kim and Karen that they have
all recovered from their recent illnesses.
Our best wishes go out to Lion Elma for
improvement to her health as she
continues to cope with Lion Ben`s health
challenges.
I`ll represent our club at the Chamber
of Commerce Biz after Biz meeting
tonight, April 17th, prior to our Dinner
meeting.
We had four members present with
members from the Mt. Brydges,
Melbourne and Strathroy Lions at the
Zone cheque presentation to the local
VON on April 3rd. Our Bulletin Chair,
Lion Barry is attaching a Youtube video to
this Bulletin. There was also a good
photo in this week`s Focus newspaper.
Four members attended the club
ofcer training at the District convention
while two other members were registered
but could not attend due to illness.
Two members supported the Sarnia
Lions Dining in the Dark on April 12th
but another two missed the evening due
to illness.
Four members attended an informal
interclub meeting at Strathroy Lions with
members from Mt. Brydges and
Melbourne Lions, at the invitation of
Zone Chair Don Geddy, on April 16th to
discuss the District rezoning.
We will visit the dynamic Mt.
Brydges Lions club on April 21st and I`m
sure it will be a great evening.
Our plans are complete for our Info
booth at the Town Home and Leisure
show on April 26th.
Our club will again participate in the
Heart and Stroke Big Bike ride on May
12th. Continued page 2

4 We Serve!
Hi, my name is Karen
Lyle. I moved to Strathroy
last November to pursue a
new career opportunity. After
living in Alberta all my life I
am looking forward to a
beautiful summer in Ontario.
I have worked for the past 15
years in the Pharmaceutical
manufacturing industry.
Previous to that, I worked as
a Rehabilitation practitioner
with people who have mental
and physical disabilities.
All of my family lives in and
around Edmonton. I have
two sons, six grandchildren,
my parents and brothers all
back home. I am looking
forward to them coming to
visit and tour around this
beautiful province this
summer.
Over the years I have been
involved with many different
volunteer opportunities. I
was the sports mom and all
that entails, I have been on
different school committees
over the years, a Girl Guide
leader, Training Ofcer with
the Army cadets and other
volunteer positions in the
community.
I have always enjoyed
helping others and doing
activities that benet my
community. I look forward to
being a part of the Lions
organization and working
with all of you, giving back to
this community.

VISION: Cataracts
A cataract is a clouding of the
lens inside the eye which leads to
a decrease in vision. It is the most
common cause of blindness and is
conventionally treated with
surgery. Visual loss occurs
because opacication of the lens
obstructs light from passing and
being focused on to the retina at
the back of the eye.
It is most commonly due to
biological aging, but there are a
wide variety of other causes. Over
time, yellow-brown pigment is
deposited within the lens and this,
together with disruption of the
normal architecture of the lens
bers, leads to reduced
transmission of light, which in
turn leads to visual problems.
Those with cataracts commonly
experience difculty in
appreciating colors and changes in
contrast, driving, reading,
recognizing faces, and coping with
glare from bright lights.
Signs and symptoms vary
depending on the type of cataract,
though there is considerable
overlap. People with nuclear
sclerotic or brunescent cataracts
often notice a reduction of vision.
Those with posterior subcapsular
cataracts usually complain of glare
as their major symptom.
Age is the most common cause.
Lens proteins denature and
degrade over time and this process
is accelerated by diseases such as
diabetes and hypertension. With
the passage of time, environmental
factors including toxins, radiation
and UV light have a cumulative
effect. These effects are worsened
by the loss of protective and
restorative mechanisms due to
alterations in gene expression and
chemical processes within the eye.

Dining in the Dark
The Sarnia Lions Club held an
invitational evening to raise
awareness in Lions and their
guests about living with vision
limitations.
Voluntarily, participants were
given blindfolds to wear while
they were eating their dinner.
The server put the plate in front
of you with the only instructions
being: the chicken is at 6 oclock,
the potatoes are at 3 oclock, the
vegetables are at 12 oclock. After
that, you had only the facilitator
at each table to keep an eye on
you so that you didnt do anything
dangerous, like spilling your drink
all over the table, grabbing your
neighbours buns (not those buns,
Lion Elma), or spilling sauce down
your front. Eating by feel is
certainly slower.
After the meal, guests heard
presentations by Alex Deans, 16,
and his surgeon father, Robin
Deans.
Alex Deans spoke about a
device he has invented and is
presenting to the International
Science Fair competition (very
bright fellow - worth investing in
him if hes offering a stock
venture).
His father Robin provided an
overview of eye surgery past,
present, and possible future (with
alternative funding models).
Pediatric Cataract
Initiative
Lions International is involved
in providing eye care funding in
other countries. About 1.4 million
children in the world are blind.
Lions Clubs International
Foundation and partners are

First Place in District A-1
Each year the District Governor asks each club in the District to send him / her their
newsletters. This helps keep the D.G. aware of the clubs activities.
Clubs are asked to also send copies to an experienced Lion (Bill Fell of Petrolia Lions) to
review them and select exemplary publications using specic criteria.
Lions Elma and Barry have consulted on topics and information to be included each month
for the information of our members. Consultation works!
