Setting: The story of Uncle Toms Cabin takes place during the 19th Century in the United States of America. Throughout the book, the setting changes from the Shelbys plantation in Kentucky, to the Northern States of America and Canada, to the Southern States of America, specifically New Orleans. The reason for the major diversity in the settings throughout the book is caused by the change in focus over the main characters in the book: Uncle Tom and his journey, Eliza and her journey, and the remaining family on the Shelbys plantation. The narrator in Uncle Toms Cabin uses the third person and the second person omniscient point of views. This allows the narrator to share the inner thoughts of characters and follow specific adventures with some of the characters, Uncle Tom, Eliza, etc.

Main Characters:

Uncle Tom- Tom is an old slave who is extremely religious and close with Jesus. He is always honest and seeks to do the right things; he tries to lead others to Jesus whenever he has a chance too. The book follows Toms journey the most, and he is loyal and nice

to every owner he has. Tom was originally Mr. Shelbys slave, and favorite, but Shelby sold him to lessen his debt. Tom, after waiting to go back home to the Shelbys plantation for a couple of years, was sold again by his second owner to a mean slave owner, Simon Legree, who eventually beat him to his death. Eliza Harris- Eliza is a beautiful slave woman to the Shelbys household; she is Mrs. Shelbys favorite servant. Eliza is very religious, and she is loyal to the Shelbys. On their journey, Eliza reunites with her husband and they all reach freedom in Canada. George Harris- George is a very intelligent slave who invented a successful machine in a factory. He is also married to Eliza and has a son, Harry; he is very skeptical of God but ends up finding him with the help of Eliza. Once George was admired and respected at the factory, his real master takes him away and forces him to work hard due to jealousy. George refuses this disrespectful treatment and runs away (leaving his wife and child behind not wanting to) to seek freedom in Canada. George eventually reunites with his family and they all escape to Canada to freedom. Evangeline (Eva) St. Clare- She is a very beautiful girl; the daughter of Augustine and Marie St. Clare of New Orleans. She is the kindest and most religious character in the book, and she becomes very close friends with Uncle Tom. Eva becomes extremely sick and eventually dies, but she influenced all the people around her very much before she died. Augustine St. Clare- He is a wealthy plantation owner of New Orleans; he is married to Marie and has a daughter, Eva. Augustine doesnt really love Marie for she is selfish, mean, and a terrible wife. He is skeptical of God throughout the book, but it is believed he found God before he dies. He died do to a wound received by a knife stab one night at a caf. Augustine had an anger towards slavery and thought it was wrong, but he never did anything about it because he felt he couldnt make a difference in society. Simon Legree- He is a very mean and hateful plantation owner of Louisiana. He abuses his slaves and threatens them all the time. He hates Tom and his ways, and one day orders Tom to beat a slave woman named Cassy. Tom refused and was in turn beaten himself. Eventually, Simon hated Tom so much that he beat Tom to death.

Mr. Shelby- He is a kind plantation owner of Kentucky; he is married to Mrs. Shelby and has a son named George. Mr. Shelby treats his slaves well and takes care of them, but one day because of his massive debt, he decided to sell two of his slaves, Tom and Harry. He felt terrible about this arrangement and was upset the remaining of the book. Mrs. Shelby- She is a very nice and religious woman; she is married to Mr. Shelby and has a son named George. She loves her slaves and treats them very well. She hated Mr. Shelbys decision is selling Tom and Harry and became disappointed in him. She was happy of Elizas escape, and she wanted to go off and work to raise money to eventually buy Tom back. She had a firm belief in treating slaves well, but she also hated the concept of slavery.

Problems Created by Slavery throughout the Book: Family SeparationEx. 1) Tom is taken from his family on the Shelbys plantation: Haley whipped up the horse, and, with a steady, mournful look, fixed to the last on the old place, Tom was whirled away (Stowe 101). Ex. 2) George was forbidden to see his wife Eliza anymore with them being on two different plantations: and he (master) says he wont let me come here any more, and that I shall take a wife and settle down on his place (Stowe 20). Ex. 3) Mr. Haley takes a child away from a slave woman named Lucy, and he sells him while she is sleeping: Lucy, your childs gone; you may as well know it first as last. You see, I knowd you couldnt take him down South; and I got a cha nce to sell him to a first-rate family, thatll raise him better than you can (Stowe 131). Death from MistreatmentEx. 4) The slave girl, Prue, that brings rolls to the St. Clares died from being mistreated by her master: Prue, she got drunk agin,-and they had her down cellar,-and thar they left her all day,-and I hearn em saying that the flies got to her,-and shes dead! (Stowe 220). Ex. 5) Uncle dies from being beaten by his master Simon Legree: A sudden sinking fell upon him; he closed his eyes; and that mysterious and sublime change passed over his face, that told the approach of other worlds (Stowe 421).

Uncle Toms Cabin Assignment Slaves Run Away-

Ex. 6) Eliza runs away from the Shelby plantation after learning about Harry being sold away: A few last words and tears, a few simple adieus and blessings, and, clasping her wondering and affrighted child in her arms, she glided noiselessly away (Stowe 42).

Questions: 1) Mr. Shelby and Mr. Haley are very different from each other. Mr. Haley is coarse, illmannered man who doesnt really care about how he does his business. Mr. Shelby is a kind man who cares about his work and hates that hes in debt. Mr. Shelby treats his slaves nice and with respect, while Mr. Haley treats them with prejudice and is not respectful of them. 2) George and Eliza do not have the freedom to marry each other, to see each other, or to raise a child together. Slaves were not allowed to have natural rights that white people had. 3) Whenever people read her novel, there is a great deal of emotion involved. The book gives a firsthand account on what life was like with slavery, and it shows what different characters views on the subject were. Some of the experiences the characters encounter in the story can connect some of the readers to the characters feelings and make them feel for them (Ex. A slave woman loses her child in a slave auction). Her goal was to show the moral issues in slavery and to highlight the cruelty of slavery. You can see different types of peoples viewpoints on slavery throughout the story. 4) Andy and Sam catch small hints from Mrs. Shelby to delay their departure to search for Eliza as much as they can. They act clumsy and cause the horses to get wild, and they play a prank on Mr. Haley by placing a beechnut under his horses saddle; the horse throws him off when he sits down. Later when they are actually travelling to town to search for Eliza, Andy and Sam also trick him into taking the longer route to town giving Eliza more time to escape. Sam also gives a secret warning to Eliza to alert her shes in danger when the search crew arrived at the Inn she was at. 5) Stowe was trying to show how religious and loyal a slave could be towards the action of slavery. Uncle Tom didnt like slavery; however he had a loving heart and wanted to influence his masters towards Jesus. He was following what the Bible says and was also trying to bring others to Jesus instead of causing trouble. 6) Yes, Senator Bird is a hypocrite. Bird voted in favor for the Fugitive Slave Law; however, he broke the very law later that night when he helps Eliza. He knew he was breaking the rule, but he saw it as the right thing to do and didnt care anymore .

7) Ms. Marie talks of the sermon at church and says the text was: He hath made everything beautiful in its season: and says the preacher proved th at all social orders come from God. Tom uses the quote "Bear thou, like him, in patience, and labor in love; for sure as he is God, 'the year of his redeemed shall come.'" to refute slavery and give himself hope. 8) Slavery was against their moral and religious beliefs, so they wanted to do what was right. Yes it is historically accurate; Quakers did help slaves escape during this time period. 9) When the St. Clare family (all but Augustine) returns home from church, Marie tells Augustine how the sermon was great and it supported slavery. He disagrees with this and believes that the Bible can be used to argue against anything. He thinks that people look to the Bible differently and find ways to support their own views towards slavery. 10) Augustine feels that he cant make a difference in society even if he wanted to. He did hold bad feelings towards slavery, but he didnt want to be one of the only plantation owners in the South to stand out for the abolishment of slavery. He also doesnt want to break the laws that the U.S. was starting to enforce. 11) They both talk of how slaves are below them. Henrique beats his slave boy, Dodo, and treats him terribly. Eva confronts him about it and he tells Eva that he feels he cannot love servants. Alfred, in talking to Augustine, spoke of how all men are definitely not born equal and that slaves are at the bottom of the classes; therefore, they dont deserve the nice and equal treatment. This shows that both Henrique and his father have views towards slaves deserving the treatment of slavery. They feel that the system of slavery is not wrong since slaves are considered the bottom class. 12) She feels that slaves are not the same as her even though they are human just like her. She lets their skin color and the acceptance of them being slaves get to her; she has been raised with these beliefs. Yes this is historically accurate; the Northern states were still prejudice and were racist towards blacks. The Northern states just didnt believe that slavery was right. 13) Stowe shows the importance of acting on your convictions throughout the book. She was trying to show people how acting on a conviction quickly or not could change the future events in ones life; its better to act sooner than later. An example of this is when Eliza decides to leave the Shelby plantation immediately after hearing the possibility of Harry being sold. If she chose not to leave at that time, the next morning Harry would have been taken from her and her whole family wouldnt go on to receive freedom in Canada like they did. 14) At the slave market, whites come and view slaves that are being displayed for sale/auction. The whites would usually examine slaves they were interested in just like they would animals at an animal auction. If the whites are interested they will buy that

slave to take home with them, and they will now hold their ownership. In most cases, mothers and their children are separated, because buyers wouldnt buy families altogether most of the time. At the slave market in Uncle Toms Cabin, Emmeline was separated from her mother. 15) Simon Legree has the motivation of wanting to change Tom and his religious beliefs. He tries to be cruel to Tom for a start, but he sees that Tom wasnt changing so it becomes a goal of his. Simon does not accomplish this goal however; Tom dies happy and forgiving of the people that beat him and even helped them become Christians. 16) The fugitives, and slaves, he was just chasing after to catch ended up being kind to him. Loker had fussed at them and shot at them, and then after he received his major injury, George, Eliza, and Phineas ended up transporting him to a Quaker village to be nursed. He probably realized that slaves are normal people just like him and that they dont deserve the terrible treatment they receive. 17) This story would have made me feel bad for the slaves and not want to treat them terribly. I would want to befriend slaves and take part in trying to help them. Im a strong supporter of Christianity and believe what the bible says; I would love the slaves like I am supposed to and work to do the morally correct thing at the time, support freedom for the slaves.

5 Important Slavery Quotes: 1) George Harris: Yes Eliza, it's all misery, misery, misery! My life is bitter as wormwood, the very life is burning out of me. I'm a poor, miserable, forlorn drudge; I shall only drag you down with me, that's all. What's the use of our trying to do anything, trying to know anything, trying to be anything! What's the use of living? I wish I was dead. (Chapter 2, pg. 18) - This quote shows the feelings that slaves could have towards slavery. Stowe uses this to show the reader of how bad slavery can make a person feel. George Harris, in this quote, is wishing that he was dead because he hates his current life so much. 2) Mrs. Bird: You ought to be ashamed, John! Poor, homeless, houseless creatures! It's a shameful, wicked, abominable law, and I'll break it, for one, the first time I get a chance; and I hope I shall have a chance, I do! Things have got to a pretty pass, if a woman can't give a warm supper and a bed to poor, starving creatures, just because they are slaves, and have been abused and oppressed all their lives, poor things! (Chapter 9, pg. 82)

This quote shows of how some whites had the right opinions and thoughts towards slavery. The reader understands of how important opinions of slavery can be, and that some people have good ones. Mrs. Bird, in this quote, is fussing at her husband, Senator Bird, for supporting the Fugitive Slave Law and saying that she will break it. She feels for the slaves and wants to help them.

3) George Harris: We don't own your laws; we don't own your country; we stand here as free, under God's sky, as you are; and, by the great God that made us, we'll fight for our liberty till we die. (Chapter 17, pg. 199) - This quote shows another opinion that slaves could have towards slavery. Some slaves become so passionate in their beliefs that they are willing to die trying to gain their freedom; they feel they deserve it, which they do. In this quote, George Harris is speaking out against Tom Loker whenever they are being chased down as fugitives. He is telling him that they have just as many rights as whites do and that he will fight until death for his freedom. 4) Prue: I looks like gwine to heavenant thar where white folks is gwine? Spose theyd have me thar? Id rather go to torment, and get away from Masr and Missis. (Chapter 18, pg. 218) - This quote shows the intense hatred some slaves had towards slavery. Some slaves can be scarred internally from incidents that have happened to them; Prue has been mistreated very badly all her life by her masters. Prue says that she would rather go to Hell and suffer than go to Heaven and be around her masters 5) A drover: Treat em like dogs, and youll have dogs works and dogs actions. Treat em like men, and youll have mens works. (Chapter 11, pg. 109) - This quote shows the reader the beliefs of a drover that owns slaves; some slave owners could be great to slaves. He treats his slaves very well with respect and gives this advice to people. Most people didnt treat their slaves very well; he was trying to make things better for slaves.
