McClary April 21, 2014 Classroom Description I was assigned to do my field experience at Brookdale Elementary School with Mr. Burgess 5th grade class. Mr. Burgess Classroom is located on the left hand side as soon as you enter into the hallway by the Main Office. Mr. Burgess room is pretty large compared to the other teachers classroom I have been in. He keeps his classroom very neat and well-kept together. In his classroom, there are a total of 19 students ranging from ages ten to eleven.10 of these students are males and 9 of those students are females. All of the students in Mr. Burgess Class are African American. When you walk into Mr. Burgess Classroom on the left top wall are the classroom expectations students need to abide by. Beside the expectations is a poster of the Grading Scale Brookdale Elementary School follows. Also on this wall is their daily writing rubric. Moving to the middle of the wall there is the Smart board, where students are able to see visual examples of the work that is being done in the classroom. They can watch videos as well as come to the board to work through different examples Mr. Burgess may have on the board for them. Above the Smart board are many posters to help students with adding and subtracting fractions. There are a lot of strategies students can use such as the SLAMS (sentences, line, answer, math, support) strategy, the CUBES (circle, underline, bar, evaluate, solve) strategy and last the RICE (read,

illustrate, compute, explain) strategy. Behind and beside the Smart board is the dry erase board, which always has the dry erase lesson plan template. If you were to walk in and look to your right, you would see a file cabinet, where Mr. Burgess keeps his safety contracts, worksheets and different activities for students. Next to this file cabinet are four computers that students can get to complete assignments given. Beside the computers is a file cabinet that contains information on his students. Above the computers is a Math Word Wall. Students can look up on this wall to see different terms they have learned during the lesson content. Beside the Math Word Wall are posters that help students with multiplying decimals and analyzing fractions and graphs. In the middle of the classroom are the students desks. They are usually all forward, facing the Smart Board. The desks in the classroom are in four columns, with one students desk right by the Smart Board (for learning purposes) and another students desk beside the door. Beside the students desks, is a bookshelf that holds their science and math materials. This bookshelf also holds their book bags. Next to this shelf is the window, heating and air unit and another shelf that hold a lot of Mr. Burgess science books and other binders. In the back of the classroom is the sink and water fountain for the students. In front of the sink is the meeting table for Mr. Burgess and his students. This is usually where he helps students when they are struggling with any lesson content they may be discussing in class. Beside the meeting table is Mr. Burgess Desk. He rarely sits at this desk due to the fact that he likes to walk around and monitor his students. Behind Mr. Burgess Desk is another bookshelf and book bag hanger. On the floor next to this bookshelf are math manipulative tools and science

kits. Beside all of these items is a storage case that has calculators and other science and math materials for students to have during a lesson.
