Conditions: The howitzer section is in an area of operation and conducting fire missions which can be When Ready (WR), At My Command (AMC) or Time on Target (TOT)in support of the maneuver commander. The sectionhas received a fire mission request for a precision munition. The section has digital communications with the Fire Direction Center and uses the Platform Integration Kit (PIK) component of the howitzer. The howitzer has the GPS Black Keys loaded in order to set the Excalibur to established Precision Guided Munitions (PGM) firing capabilities at the firing point. Enemy indirect fire is possible. This task will be performed during day or night operations and all weather conditions. All section personnel, equipment, ammunition, and charges are available to conduct the mission. Time is available to accomplish the fire mission. Coalition forces and noncombatants may be present in the operational environment and target area. Some iterations of this task should be performed in MOPP. Standards: The howitzer section fires the Excalibur round or is ready to fire the round within the time requirements based on the type of fire mission. For the WR mission time starts when the receipt of mission is acknowledged on the Digital Fire Control System (DFCS) and stops when the round is fired. For AMC fire missions, time starts after the completion of the do not load (DNL) phase and ends when the round is fired. Time starts for the TOT mission when the mission is acknowledged. Time stops when the weapon is at the load elevation, laid on the azimuth of fire and the READY key is depressed on the Chief of Section Display (CSD). Time standard for all fire missions is 1 minute. Unit Instructions: Resources: One M777A1/A2 Howitzer with complete BII, complete howitzer section for each howitzer with LBE, Kevlar, and CBRN equipment, voice and digital frequencies with security fills, survey control points, dummy training rounds and fuzes, TM 9-1025-215-10, and FM 6-50. Training Site: A field training area is the most complete way to accomplish the training; however any area large enough to accomplish the task with clearance for the howitzer to traverse the tube is sufficient. Unit instructions: If in a field training environment ensure the Gunnery Sergeant has reconnoitered the area to occupy. The Gunnery Sergeant has also coordinated with the BN Survey element for Survey Control Points (SCP). Ensure the DFCS was properly initialized and has current survey data. If the FDC is to be used voice and digital communications need to be established before the drill begins. Although not absolutely necessary to have a Fire Direction Center with digital capabilities for training of this drill it is advantageous to have an FDC available for dry fire verify.

Talk:

a.Orientation: Orientation: Before the beginning of the drill training, the trainer will ensure that each section member knows the purpose of the drill. The purpose of the drill is to train howitzer section in every duty position involved with Conducting a Deliberate Occupation of a M777A1/A2. To be proficient and meet the designated time standards. Upon occupation section personnel must work as a team to accomplish many tasks at the same time. Once the section knows the purpose, then the trainer will take the section members slowly and completely through the drill and when every section member is proficient in the drill they will change positions.

b.Safety: A Risk Assessment should be completed before starting the training, including any local environmental factors such as darkness, inclement weather, and MOPP. These can create hazards as well as aggravate existing hazards. The crew is briefed on the warnings and cautions as stated in FM 6-50, TM 9-1025-215-10 as well as the need for precise fires to prevent friendly casualties. Heavy steel equipment and hydraulically powered movements are inherently dangerous! A Risk Assessment should be done before the training has started, to identify unforeseen hazards or situations that the battery/platoon might occur while occupying. The utmost care should be taken at all times.

c.Demonstration: If another section has successfully performed the drill, have that crew demonstrate the drill. Describe their actions using the performance measures as a guide.

d.Explanation: The trainer should explain the duties and responsibilities of each member of the section during this drill. The trainer will read the performance measures for the drill and have the section members explain their performance measures to ensure that they understand them.

e.Unit Instructions: Resources: One M777A1/A2 Howitzer with complete BII, complete howitzer section for each howitzer with LBE, Kevlar, and CBRN equipment, voice and digital frequencies with security fills, survey control points, dummy training rounds and fuzes, TM 9-1025-215-10, and FM 6-50. Although not absolutely necessary to have a Fire Direction Center with digital capabilities for training of this drill it is advantageous to have an FDC available for dry fire verify.

Walk: 1. The FDC sends a fire mission over the DFCS. The mission will be an Excalibur, At My Command mission within 50 mils of the azimuth of lay. Time will start after the last digit of the quadrant has been announced. 2. The trainer should conduct a walk-through at a slow pace at first, ensuring every member knows what they should be doing in their job. Do not proceed until the drill is done right. After the section members demonstrate their proficiency at a slow pace, let them do it faster. Remember, however, that safety is never sacrificed for speed. Watch carefully to make sure the squad members achieved all of the standards for the drill. 3. Conduct an AAR after the walk-through answering any questions and making corrections if necessary. On the first subsequent walk-through the trainer may halt the drill in place and correct deficiencies.

Run:

a.Run-Through Instructions: The soldiers will practice this drill until they can perform the drill to standard by memory. The initial run through is conducted slowly. Once they have achieved initial standards to time, new conditions will be introduced, i.e, mopp gear, rotation of crew positions, and different environment factors such as weather, day and night occupation.

b.Coaching Point: If needed, correct the soldier after he completes a performance measure. Soldiers complete performance measures in sequence.

c.Performance Instructions: When the crew can perform this drill according to the standard, they should be evaluated by the Platoon Leader or Platoon Sergeant.
