Lesson Plan Topic: Section 7.1 Area of a Region Between Two Curves I.

. Goal(s): to develop students understanding of integration as an accumulation process and area of a region between two curves Objective(s): Students will o find the area of a region between two curves using integration. o find the area of a region between two intersecting curves using integration. o describe integration as an accumulation process. Materials and Resources: The teacher needs an IPad, and a projector to show students pages from the textbook. Prior Knowledge: Students need to be able to ( ) or ( ) o determine whether ( ) ( ) given two functions ( ) and ( ). o graph basic quadratic functions like and linear lines. o integrate indefinite integrals using Power Rule, Log Rule, or u-substitution. o evaluate definite integrals using the First Fundamental Theorem of Calculus. Lesson Procedure: 1. Post Do Now on the board. Do Now: Find the area of the region bounded by the graphs of ( ) and Sketch the functions and shade the region. 2. Go over questions that students have on lasts night homework. Ask for volunteers to do homework problems on the board. 3. Have a student comes up to the board to do the Do Now and let the student explains the work to the class. 4. Use the Do Now to introduce todays lesson. Ask students to think about how would they find the area of the region bounded by the graphs if we change to . Have students draw a sketch first. Redo the Do Now with and lead students to come up with the following definition. Area of a Region Between Two Curves If f and g are continuous on [a,b] and ( ) ( ) for all x in [a,b], then the area of the region bounded by the graphs of f and g and the vertical lines x=a and x=b ( )] . is [ ( ) 5. Go over how to sketch representative rectangle and what it means with students, and then work on the following example with the students.

Ex1. Find the area of the region bounded by the graphs of ( ) and ( ) and sketch the representative rectangle. 6. Tell students that the two curves do not necessary have to intersect. Use the following example to demonstrate that. Ex2. Find the area of the region bounded by the graphs of and Sketch. 7. Let students work on the following example on their own. ( ) Ex3. Find the area of the region bounded by the graphs of ( ) and . 8. Go over another example where the curves intersect at more than two points. Let students work on it first, and then ask for volunteer to do it on the board if students got it. Show them the graph. Ex4. Find the area of the region bounded by the graphs of ( ) and ( ) . VII. Closure:

Summarize what students have learned today, and give them a preview of tomorrows lesson. Assign homework, and remind students to bring in students that they have to the following class.

Accommodation(s): Clearly label everything, and highlight significant definitions and main points for students with auditory processing problems or other related disability. Assessment Formative: 1. Walk around the room and raise questions as students work in individually to monitor their working progress and understanding of the topic. 2. Specific questions during the class discussion are asked to measure students understanding of the lesson. 3. Observe students facial expressions during class discussion. 4. Provide examples for students to work on their own and tell them to post answers on the board. 5. Randomly call on students to assess their understanding of the topic and ability to make connection between ideas. Summative: Homework (pg. 452, #1-6, 13a, 17-23 odd) It will be checked the next day, and counted towards their homework grade.
