These are all questions and many more that were answered at Prairie Valley Jr. and Sr. High School in Gowrie on Monday, March 31st. Our state teams won, lost but they gave us thrills

But I didnt notice a pendant from Iowa Central Community College. On the menu is Dan Gables homemade breaded pork tenderloin, but I had a simple breakfast. Meanwhile, things are winding down in Arizona for the snowbirds. Pastor Jim Glesne said goodbye to Victory Lutheran Sunday and drove back to Decorah, Iowa on Monday. And everything is perfect in His time.

Plant Operator, Gowrie, IA

I dont follow college basketball like I once did, but I certainly check out our state teams when it comes to the NCAA tournament and March Madness. It was disappointing to see Iowa miss the tournament, but Iowa State was doing well and made it to the Sweet 16. The Cyclones lost a key player via injury and although they fought valiantly they couldnt quite make it to the elite eight. Im originally from Ladysmith, WI, so I was delighted to see Wisconsin qualify for the Sweet 16, and eventually they made it to the Final Four. I watched the games with my brother Denis, an avid sports fan, and my mother. There was nothing sweeter than winning that thriller against Arizona by just a single point. Frank Kaminsky was named the regional MVP and the Badgers were in the Final Four for the first time since 2000. It was ironic that we were cheering on the Badgers while living in Arizona where all the local residents were pulling for their Wildcats. The Badgers played Kentucky so well in the Final Four. It appeared that Wisconsin would prevail as we watched the first half, and then after enduring a Kentucky rally in the second half, the Badgers made a run of their own to tie the contest and then take a very narrow lead. With 16 seconds remaining a Badger guard, Tramon Jackson, made two free throws and it appeared Wisconsin would go to the championship. But alas, Kentucky made a clinching three-pointer to win the game by a single point. Ouch. Well, that is life. There can be jubilation for great moments, and there will be disappointments. Hopefully Iowa State, Iowa and Wisconsin will all be back in the tournament again next year. The next day, after church, I went to the Iowa Cafe (Higley near Brown), hoping it would make me feel better I guess. Inside there was the big map of Iowa, and a push pin was on Gowrie and I knew that was placed there by Don and Kay Miller of Gowrie. But then I noticed that someone from Farnhamville had dined at the Iowa Cafe. (Patrons from Iowa can show their hometown by placing a push pin on the Iowa town where they are residents). So who from Farnhamville was here I wondered? And now there were also single push pins over Paton and Somers. Who were these people? At the Iowa Cafe there are pendants from all the Iowa schools displayed: University of Iowa, Iowa State, UNI, Drake, Iowa Wesleyan, Morningside, Briar Cliff, Upper Iowa, Wartburg, Grinell, Cornell, Buena Vista, DMAAC, Dubuque, Central and more.

Is the tour ended?

Those of you who still can make the climb, come with me to the second floor of the Boxholm Consolidated School Building and remember as it was 68 years ago. Since we were at that end of the first floor last week, lets go up those south set of stairs. As we land on that floor, almost straight ahead is the cloak hall for the high school boys. I notice there are now lockers instead of coat hooks and shelves. On the southeast corner was our fifth grade room, the one where we would have our first experiences on that floor. Miss Williams was our teacher. I may have mentioned before that she rarely smiled. I dont remember her ever raising her voice to us but I think her rare smile and the lack of much expression on her face were what may have ruled us or kept us in line. Directly across from the fifth grade room was Miss Mortons sixth grade class room. Miss Morton smiled and I think she controlled us with her caring attitude that must have come across to us. This room would be our last in a room set aside just for a particular grade. We were growing up! As we went north, to our left was the boys restroom, directly above the first floor one. Those restrooms are only thing that has stayed in same place. To the right as we went north was the typing room. Some of us opted to take a second year of typing along with shorthand classes. Mrs. Leo taught English, shorthand and typing. Her husband had been in the war and had health problems related to his service and was in the Veterans Hospital in Des Moines for a long time. One day toward the end of the day the principal came and got me out of study hall. Would I please come to the sixth grade room and monitor them for the last hour or so of the day. Mrs. Leo had gotten a message her husband was very bad and Miss Morton, her special close friend, would drive her to Des Moines. Mr. Leo lost his battle. The typing room had served for years as the boys lunch room. Other rooms on down the hall were primarily the English room, special grammar, other related subjects room and the History room where social studies of various stages were learned. I remember both Miss Phipps and Miss Maude Moffett teaching those subjects, both being very capable. As we journeyed on north up that hallway we come to another alcove across from the north stairway and that was the girls cloak hall. There was still that segregation of cloak halls and lunch rooms. The room at the end on the northeast was the band/music room and if you recall my telling it, a hoped for dance venue. Now of all the things I remember, I am not sure if this continued to be a lunch room after we got the hot lunch program. Do any of my readers remember? It seems we may have brought our food back up there as some still brought their lunch, especially if we didnt want what was on the menu for the day. There wasnt a lot of room in the Home Ec. Room either. Across from the band/music room was the lab. I dont know how much of a lab they actually had in there but do remember once in a while smelling something like rotten eggs or rotten onions wafting through the doors cracks. Every science class couldnt be taught each year (lack of faculty or faculty specialty) but were alternated, thus kids from both eleventh and twelfth grade might be sharing the classes. I was fortunate that the only required science subject for high school was general science and that was taught in a regular classroom, thus no lab work or experiments done. I took that in ninth grade as did my other classmates and then was glad to have commercial classes and/or English/composition and speech classes available in addition to required social studies which I liked pretty well. The girls restroom was near the north stairway, above the first floor one. The end of the hallway north room was the Superintendents office. It also was the schools secretarys office and where the mimeograph (remember that smelly purple stuff that got all over your hands?) machine was kept. During my senior year as part of my typing/shorthand credit I was assigned to Mr. Roskens as a helper. I typed some of his tests, hoping not to make too many mistakes that had to be fixed and then running them on the mimeo machine. Others may have been assigned the same tasks with other teachers. Living in town I could do that work after school hours. The small room at the south end of the hall between the fifth and sixth grade rooms was, at one time anyway, the sick room. If a student didnt feel well they could go in there and rest for a while or until a parent could come to get them. Also, occasionally the County nurse would come around and we would have to go up there to have our temperatures taken and I suppose our throats, eyes and ears checked. But let us go back to the middle of the hallway to the West. There was our beloved assembly hall, entered/exited by three doors. It was supposed to be a study hall when you had no class or sport activity. I think a few actually studied in there. We had the individual desks with the drawers under the seats for our books and papers. I have reported on this room before, especially as seventh graders feeling so grown up to be in there with the upper classmen. It seemed so large to me then, even with the stage and side rooms up front. If those walls could talk. If the ghost of that old stage could come back and tell about all the plays, operettas, musical programs, childrens programs, special events and most of all graduations that graced it what a book it could make. But, it has to remain in the memories of those of us who were in that room, on that stage, in that building those years ago. Are yours as good, as precious as mine?

Routine screening saves life of Rockwell City man

SMCH re-released this article with a small correction in bold. Like many people who generally feel in good health, John Van Ness put off getting a colonoscopy even after he celebrated his 50th birthday. I knew that after age 50 I should have the screening, but every time I scheduled it, something would come up, recalls Van Ness who is a licensed counselor and social worker who counsels inmates at the North Central Correctional Facility in Rockwell City. Last fall, Van Ness says the recommendation from his doctor, Dr. Derek Duncan, to get a colonoscopy started to sink in. I scheduled the procedure at Stewart Memorial Community Hospital in Lake City. Dr. Duncan found a dozen different polyps in Van Ness colon. For Van Ness, the results of his colonoscopy served as a wake up call. I now tell all of my friends to get the screening done. It is worth the time and effort. I am very fortunate to be the patient of a doctor who collaborates with me to be proactive with my health and it saved my life.

Letter to the Editor

Im writing in regards to your March 26th article on the slaying of Everett Warden 70 years ago. Mrs. Ruth Warden (I didnt know her maiden name), after many years became my mother-in-law. Ruth married Axel Freed and was married a number of years. John Freed, her brother-in-law, also after many years lost his wife, so the two married and lived in Dayton. Charles Freed, my husband, and son of John, Ruth, his aunt, now became his step-mother. I knew Ruth as a very kind and friendly lady. We moved to California in 1953 and my husband worked for Star-Kist Foods for 30 years, retiring as Supervisor of Corporate Accounts. He died in 1997 and Max and Elayne Palmer were in the area and attended his memorial service. I moved to Florida 5 years ago to be closer to my son and his family. Triton Softball to play at Warrior Field, Sat. April 26

On Saturday, April 26, the Iowa Central Triton Softball Team will play Kirkwood Community College at Warrior Field in a double-header. Game times are 1:00 and 3:00 p.m. with no admission charges. If you are a fan of softball this will provide an opportunity to see two of the best Division II community college teams go at it. Kirkwood is currently ranked #4 in the country at 42-5 overall and 15-1 in the conference while the Tritons are in 2nd Place in the conference with records of 36-8 and 13-3. Anytime these 2 rival programs play each other, the intensity level tends to go up a notch, so it should be fun. will be particularly beneficial to minority students and kids from low-income families. Reports show that fewer students from low-income families who attend preschool require intensive intervention after they enter kindergarten. The children were less likely to drop out of school, repeat grades, need special education or get into trouble with the law. By the fall of 2012, almost 21,500 Iowa preschoolers (55 percent) in 314 school districts were getting the benefits of our statewide program, which provides at least 10 hours per week of ageappropriate instruction. SF 2351 will now help get even more of Iowas 41,000 preschool-aged kids into the classroom if their families want to send them.

Motion carried unanimously. Engineer Randy Will informed the Board that on April 16, 2013 the Board approved the purchase of two tandem axle trucks with snow plow equipment from OHalloran International, Inc. in the amount of $384,724.00. Bids were also received from Interstate Motor Trucks, Mason City, Iowa in the amount of $392,460.00 and a bid from Rees Trucks, Fort Dodge in the amount of $409,500.00. The Road Departments Fiscal Year 2015 new equipment budget includes purchasing two new tandem trucks with snow plow equipment identical to last years, but with the following changes: deleting shoes on front plow and installing parking jack; and switching from front mounted wing to 9 feet mid mounted wing. OHalloran International and Hiway Truck Equipment recently informed him that they will honor the same pricing as last year until April 16, 2014, minus the deductions, so the total amount of two trucks is $384,724.00, minus $3,578.00 or $381,146.00 with delivery in approximately six months following approved order. Therefore, Engineer Will recommended that the Board approve the purchase of two new tandem trucks from OHalloran International, Inc. in the amount of $381,146. Moved by Dencklau, seconded by Campbell to approve County Engineers recommendation to purchase two tandem axle dump trucks with snow equipment from OHalloran International in the amount of $381,146.00. ITC came to the utilities and put a monitor on at the substation, which showed a 17% swing in the voltage. Until then ITC believed that the problem was just Gowrie Municipal Utilities problem. GMU has disconnected the low voltage side, which seems to have alleviated some of the problems, but they wont go away entirely until Alliant finishes the upgrades to the line. According to the information given to Chuck, with the new wind farm going up, we may always see more fluctuation in our voltage, but are hopeful that an upgrade to the relay system will keep it under control. No new bids for heating the engine room. Chuck is not worried about it as much with warmer weather coming. Chuck talked to a man from McGuire Iron about painting the water tower. His estimates were $95,000 for the exterior and $50,000 for the interior. The paint from Tnemec can be expected to last twenty-five years. Boerner moved to donate 400,000 gallons to the pool, second Lane. Carried-all ayes.
