Advance Nodal Code (ANC) is software used in nuclear industry to perform a neutronics simulation of a reactors behavior during its lifetime. The software could be used in variety of reactor designs, and help engineers to calculate reactor parameters. The calculations are essential part of safety evaluations, which ensures that a given reactor will be operated under its design criterion. ANC is the proprietary software of Westinghouse; and a copy of the software cannot be given to you. However, ANC is installed into a server in the Mechanical and Nuclear Engineering Department, and you can remotely connect to it using your PC or laptop. This instructions set is designed to assist you with the initial connection to the server and running the program. You will need ANC to perform your final projects in NUC E 403, Advanced Reactor Design, and NUC E 431W, Synthesis of Nuclear Systems classes. Complete input deck will be provided to you, but you would need to change it to meet criterion of your projects. These changes might involve reshuffling of core loading pattern or introducing burnable absorbers into fuel assemblies. Analysis of the changes will be based on the output data of your run.

Note:
Make sure that you have full administrative rights of your operating system. If you do not have the rights, then visit this forum link, which explains how to restore your administrative rights: http://www.sevenforums.com/software/176660-full-administrative-rights.html

1. Go to https://sslvpn.engr.psu.edu, and sign in using your PSU credentials (e.g. xyz1234) and choose full_tunnel_realm

Note:
Ensure that you have the latest version of Java software before proceeding to the next step. If you do not have the software, then go to: http://www.java.com/en/ and install it.

2. Download (by clicking Start icon) and install Junos Pulse program

3. Run the program and login using your PSU credentials through full_tunnel

4. Go to https://downloads.its.psu.ed u/, download and install SSH Secure Shell (for Windows) program under File Transfer Tab

5. Run the program and click to Quick Connect: a. Host Name put either pliska.mne.psu.edu or levski.mne.psu.edu b. User Name put your PSU Id (xyz1234) c. Leave other settings as default d. Click Connect

6. Enter temporary password, which is temp_pass (no quotation marks), then change the password as the program requests

7. Open File Transfer Shell through SSH Secure Shell

8. Locate your directory, which should be under /home/nuce_431w/xyz1234

9. Copy necessary files for your project from /home/nuce_431w/referenc e_cores to your own directory (e.g. xyz1234)

Note:
Ensure that file name for your input deck ends with .job (not .txt) and saved in ANSI encoding. 10. Run an input deck from your directory by typing: job -a -b -c -i input.job where input.job is name of your input deck.

Warning:
If you inadvertantly delete any of the documents from your directory, then the documents are deleted permanently. Therefore, you should always make duplicate of your files and save it on your computer or on external memory device.

After start of the run, wait until this line pliska:/home/nuce_431w/xyz1234: shows up again. At this point, the software computes the output file, which is located at your directory and named input.out. You can modify your input deck and run the simulation again.

Note:
You cannot start several runs simultaneously.

>%)&?,.#/))$("0*
Your computer should be connected to the server at all time, when the run is being performed. If your computer gets disconnected from the server for any reason, then your output document is not complete. Thus, you have to reconnect to the server, delete old outputs, and run the simulation again.

Tip:
If you want to delete a folder, you have to delete all files inside of the folder first, and then delete the folder.
