EXERCISE 1:

TRANSIENT METHOD
BDA 40303

Dr. Izzuddin Zaman

The left and the right ends of the structure is fixed. An impulse force is applied to this structure at the location in between material 2 and material 3. The function of this impulse force is shown in next Figure.

You have to investigate the displacement by using all available solver algorithms in two locations: (a) at node between material 1 and material 2 (Node 2) (b) at node between material 2 and material 3 (Node 3)
Compare the results by plotting in a single plot

Analysis Type>1D > Dynamic Response >General.

Model> Global Properties> General tab> Number of Time Steps: 12 and Timestep:0.28 Model> Global Properties> Solvers tab> Newmark Method

Define 3 material properties Geometric> General section

Create 3 elements only use line2> assign material

Create constraints at end nodes displcx=0

Apply Load- select node 3> Time Step Load List> insert 12 load data of forcex Solve the model Post processor - go to Table > extract displacement x for node 2 and 3 .. Tick on include time and rows

EXERCISE 2: SPRINGBACK SIMULATION

BDA 40303

Dr. Izzuddin Zaman

A cantilever beam has material properties Youngs modulus E = 200GPa, Poisson ratio = 0.3, density = 7860 kg/m3. The theory says that whenever an elastic material is loaded, then the loading is released, the deformed part will return back to its original shape. The loading is applied only 6 seconds then after that the loading is released. The simulation time is set 10 seconds (see next Figure).

Dr. Izzuddin Zaman

Using the previous model, but now you have to apply initial condition without any loads. At the tip of the cantilever bean, an initial velocity 10 m/s is applied (downward direction).
You need to investigate the behavior of the structure every 0.001s (1 ms) for the duration of 0.05 s.

TASK 4: VIBRATION ON BRIDGE

BDA 40303

Dr. Izzuddin Zaman

The elements of a bridge structure have E = 200GPa and the cross section area A = 10 10-4 m2. The mass density of the material is 8000 kg/m 2. As a design engineer you are requested to provide an information in regard the vibration characteristics of the preliminary design of the bridge.

TASK 4: VIBRATION ON BRIDGE

BDA 40303

As a design engineer you are requested to provide an information in regard the vibration characteristics of the preliminary design of the bridge. 1. Provide the first 5 natural frequencies and the corresponding mode shapes 2. Your report must not only plotting the mode shapes but also to described technically so the reader could understand the mode of the vibrations without looking at the animation 3. If your client is not satisfied with the first natural frequency and wants to have higher natural frequency of the first mode, what will be your recommendation. Your recommendation must be convincing and based on the data that you have.
