Before watching the video, students will be prompted with two questions to think about: How did apartheid affect the lives of the Africans? How did apartheid affect the lives of the Afrikaaners? After the video, students will discuss the two questions, which segue into a

discussion of how perspective informs how someone will view something. By framing the discussion with the two questions, which have starkly different perspectives, students are better able to see how apartheid affected the Africans and how this informed their opinion on apartheid. After their short discussion, students will be introduced to Stephen Biko, who was a nationalist leader in South Africa that wanted to end apartheid. This introduction will frame how students complete the work session activity. Work Session Students will be given excerpts of statements made by the officers and witnesses who were involved in Bikos death as well as lyrics from a song written in memorial of Biko. Many of the excerpts are contradictory and are informed by that particular persons perspective of the incident. https://docs.google.com/document/d/1S8gFaPOHaRodOyYxkVllMvWqVZz_sbZM0qqMRq3c5k/edit Students must analyze and make inferences about the incident from these multiple perspectives in order to formulate their own informed perspective. While reading the excerpts, students will answer accompanying questions in order to help organize their thoughts and summarize key points. https://docs.google.com/document/d/1VNlZfG32LH543fkP3pIBWJfPkjdjSy7B -_67hC8OwHw/edit Once they have completed the assignment, students will find their own verdict in the case as well as answer the following question: How do the different perspectives of apartheid affect how people view Biko and the incident?
