Disabled Peoples Organisations

Disabled Peoples User Led Organisations (DPULOs) are organisations run BY and FOR disabled people. In February over 80 people from North East DPULOs came to a conference run by Skills for People for the Office for Disability Issues. They thought about how DPULOs can get the funding they need and decided to set up a North East Network for DPULOs. They heard about a new Fulfilling Potential Forum this is a group where DPULOs from all over the country will meet with the government a few times each year. At the meeting disabled people from all over the country met the Minister for Disabled People, and talked about what the government could change to make sure people are treated equally and included. The Minister told everyone that the Prime Minister has given him the job of talking to all the other Ministers in Government about the changes that need to be made. Disabled people at the meeting talked about the problems disabled people face, like changes to benefits, the Independent Living Fund, and Hate Crime. The Minister said that he would try and change some things quickly. Contact Liz Wright at Skills for People if you want to know more liz.wright@skillsforpeople.org.uk Phone 0191 281 8737
