AROUND ICELAND
Tilvera okkar er undarlegt
feralag. Our existence is
a strange journey. So goes
a popular lyric written by an
Icelandic poet in the last cen-
tury. Then there are the travels
within the journey of life. To
observe new places, meet peo-
ple, enjoy the view, food and
culture in new surroundings,
that is, experience new and
exciting adventures every day.
Iceland certainly has much to
offer in that regard. Whether
the road leads north, south,
east or west, all around the island or into the central highlands,
new experiences, endless variety in colorful nature and new
adventures await at every footstep, only if youre willing to let
it all into your heart.
One of Icelands qualities is the incredible diversity of nature
and landscape. The hardly touched vastnesses of the highlands,
black sands and rough lavas, surrounded by white glaciers is
a different world from the lush valleys of North Iceland or
the prosperous plains of South Iceland. The majestic Alpine
landscape of the West Fjords, East Fjords and Trllaskagi
peninsula, carved into the thick basalt stack, is one of the coun-
trys facies, the curvy hills of the ingeyjarsslur counties ano-
ther. The volcanic belt with volcanoes and lava fields is a world
apart from the soft lines of the Dalir region in the west. And
pearls rise from the ocean. Vestmannaeyjar, Grmsey, Flatey in
Breiafjrur and Hrsey, which basks during sunny days in the
mirror of Eyjafjrur, and the islands of safjarardjpwho
can ask for more on a limited piece of earth on this globe? Each
region has something special to offer in terms of landscape,
history and culture. Everywhere interesting museums and
exhibitions can be found, food products, handicrafts, design
objects; the production of each region is continuously growing.
In reality, a successful trip consists mostly of experiences. To
move between places, walk, cycle, drive, fly, ride on horseback
or sail along the coastline is only a small part of it all.
So I say: heres to happy experiences this summer, spring,
autumn and winter. Iceland is a wonderful travel destination all
year round. I know. Ive visited around 50 countries and none
of them beats Iceland in diversity and endless opportunities
to experience new adventures every day. All you need is high
spirits, the will to absorb and to treat everything and everyone
you encounter with respect and you will return full of humility
and gratefulness for existing.
Steingrmur J. Sigfsson,
Minister of Industries, Innovation and Travel
The travel guide book Around
Iceland is now published for the
38th time. It was first published
when the ring road was opened
in 1976. This travel guide has
been immensely popular and
has had a circulation of 100,000
copies annually for many years
now. This popularity is based
on the accurate and detailed
information about most things
that can be of use to visi-
tors when they travel Around
Iceland. This information has
been gathered through excellent cooperation with tourist
agents and locals all over the country. It is updated annually
with great care, in close cooperation with tourist information
offices and locals all over the country, to make sure that the
information is as accurate as possible.
The contents are arranged in order of their geographical
location, going clockwise around the country from its south-
west corner, then north and back through south Iceland.
Accompanying each chapter is a map of the area, with listings
of the main camping sites, accommodation, and swimming
pools with colours and numbers, which in turn correspond to
service listings accompanying the chapters on rural areas in the
booklet. These maps are not accurate enough to be intended
as roadmaps. You will also find maps of towns with service
listings in the book.
Over three hundred and fifty advertisers introduce their ser-
vices in the booklet, making it possible for us to distribute it in
100,000 copies free of charge to tourists. The pages of Around
Iceland are graced with beautiful photographs of Iceland by
our top photographers. These photos are for sale on our
website (www.heimur.is). At the beginning of each chapter,
you will find concise landscape descriptions and information
on the area, such as history, culture, places of interest, leisure
activities, and communications.
At the very beginning of the booklet, you will also find useful
general information on Iceland and its people. Finally, I hope
that travellers will respect Icelands fragile nature on their
journey. I wish you all a wonderful trip around Iceland and a
safe return.

AROUND ICELAND
For those looking to explore Icelands diverse natural world, the
outdoor possibilities are endless. Despite the hoards of youngsters
who venture to Iceland on a weekend stopover to explore the pubs
and cafs of Reykjavk, the number one reason why tourists visit
Iceland is its nature. Sure enough, backpackers arrive in Reykjavk by
the plane full, eager to get away from the capital and pitch their tents
some place in Icelands vast wilderness. While you dont have to be
Joe Camper to enjoy Icelands rugged terrains, it helps to have an
adventurous spirit.
From Whales to Snowmobiles Imagine yourself flying across
a glacier with nothing in front of you but white tundra and
vistas of rugged mountains. Perhaps the most popular glacier to
cross by snowmobile is Snfellsnesjkull glacier on Snfellsnes, the
westernmost peninsula of Iceland. Written about in Jules Vernes
adventure novel Journey to the Centre of the Earth, the glacier and
its surrounding area have long had a special hold on both locals and
visitors. On top of the glacier - weather permitting - you will sit
on your snowmobile and marvel at the view of the North Atlantic
Ocean, which appears, from this perch, to be lapping up against the
mountain. If the rush of a snowmobile ride is not your style, venture
out to Ltrabjarg (West Fjords) and dangle over the largest bird cliff
in the world. Perched upon this precipice are a variety of cliff-nesting
species, including the largest razorbill colony in the world. Whether
youre a bird lover, or just an interested bystander, spotting the
peculiar-looking Icelandic puffin is sure to please. There is no better
place for this than the Westman Islands, home to Icelands largest
puffin population. If you dare, shimmy up the jagged cliffs of Ystiklettur,
and net some puffins with the locals.
Whale Watching Definitely the most popular adventure activity
in Iceland is whale watching. Regardless of where in Iceland you are
at this very moment, theres sure to be a boat waiting to take you
within an arms reach of a breaching humpback or a minke whale. Of
course, Europes capital of whale watching is Hsavk, north Iceland.
After a trip with Gentle Giants or North Sailing, that owns a.o. an
old-fashioned schooner, you and your friends, giddy from having just
seen a humpback say hello with its fin, should stop off at the Hsavk
Whale Centre to enjoy its interesting exhibition.
Wild Salmon Anglers from all across the world travel to Iceland for
what is some of the best salmon fishing you can find. North Atlantic
salmon carve their way through wild rivers flowing past volcanic
moun tains, deep valleys and open farmland. Other than the massive
salmon that you can almost scoop out of the glacial rivers with your
hand just like a grizzly bear, the best thing about fishing in Iceland is that
youll be able to enjoy a long stretch of river all to yourself, or along
with your fishing friends. While the salmon season runs from around
June 20 to mid-September, the trout season varies from river to river,
although the official season is from April/May to September/October.
For those with thick blood, or a fluffy down jacket, ice fishing is very
popular here in Iceland. Anglers hungry to land bigger fish will not have
a difficult time finding companies to take them to deeper waters. Sea
fishing normally begins in late May and lasts until the end of August.
Several tournaments are located in different parts of the country.
Blazing a Trail Iceland is considered a hikers paradise. With
lunar landscapes scarred by mass lava flows, glaciers, black sand and
deep lakes, there is much to witness on foot. One hike certainly
ON THE GLACIER.
uADVENTURE ICELAND
19
AROUND ICELAND
not to be missed is a climb up Mt. Esja, Reykjavks most enduring
landmark. Accessible to even those of moderate athleticism, the peak
of Esja offers incredible views of southwest Iceland. Theres nothing
like ascending the mountain during the summer, as the sun dangles
over the horizon throughout the light night. Another must-see area
accessible to hikers is Lake Mvatn, located in north Iceland. Touring
the Mvatn area is as close as youll get to the sensation of travelling
through outer space. This volcanic landscape, scarred by many
eruptions, is where the Mars Association trains. Bird lovers will also
be happy to know that Mvatn has more species of breeding ducks
than any other spot in Europe.
Midnight Golf As strange as it may seem, Iceland is full of golf
courses. This harsh climate is a Mecca for golf during the summer,
when golfers can hit the links from morning through the night.
Come the middle of June, what was once said to be the worlds
northernmost 18-hole golf course, Akureyri, hosts the Arctic Open,
a popular tournament that tees off at midnight. For more information
on golf, contact the local tourist office. And be prepared to hit the ball
low. Its windy out there.
Swimming is by far the most popular outdoor activity in Iceland.
Strange, considering this place is called Iceland. However, the pools
are geothermally heated, so even on a very cold winters day, a trip to
the pool is a must. The swimming pools are where you can take the
pulse of the nation, as the hot pots are where Icelanders trade stories,
make deals and arrange that late-night pub rendezvous. During the
summer months, youll see Icelanders soaking up every last minute of
sunshine at one of the public swimming pools, laid out like many seals
on a warm, sandy beach. If the pools not your thing, but youd still like
to take the plunge, head on down to Nauthlsvk, the thermal beach
located in a secluded cove in Reykjavk. If you want more nature for
your soak, go to one of Icelands many geothermal hot springs, or head
to Icelands most popular tourist attraction, the Blue Lagoon.
Diving and snorkeling might not be the first thing that comes
to mind when thinking of Iceland. However, Iceland has some of
the worlds most unique dive sites. First of all there is Silfra in lake
Thingvellir, located in the National Park Thingvellir which is a Unesco
World Heritage site. The Silfra ravine is a fissure created by the
continental drift of the Eurasian and American tectonical plates. So,
you are literally diving or snorkeling between two continents. The
ravine is fed with glacial water through underground wells, that has
been travelling through lava fields for decades and is therefore as clear
as water can be. The water in this fantastic underwater landscape
made of steep rock walls is most likely the clearest you will ever dive
in. The visibility is over 100 meters.
But Silfra is not the only unique dive site in Iceland. The ocean up here
is full of life. Strtan the geothermal chimney in the fjord Eyjafjrur
is another example for great diving. During the last 12.000 years hot
springs at the bottom of the 70 meter deep ocean have created a 55
meter high chimney that is dived from a boat.
River rafting is an exciting and fun activity, giving participants
unique insight into the tremendous power found in Icelands natural
landscapes. Several locations throughout Iceland offer tourists the
opportunity to raft along raging glacial rivers in solid rubber rafts,
through rushing rapids and deep gullies, accompanied of course by
experienced guides who ensure that all safety measures are adhered
to. Varying levels of difficulty are possible, anything from easy trips for
families (restricted to 12 years of age and older) to tours aimed at
major thrill seekers.
While some might consider river rafting to be dangerous, the security
of participants is ensured through strict safety measures and the
highest quality equipment. Special wet suits, safety vests, helmets and
wet shoes are provided. Prior to heading out, guides carefully go
over all safety aspects and instruct participants in how to use their
oars. Participants are requested to bring a towel and an extra set of
underwear.
River rafting with highly experienced guides is offered on the rivers
Hvt in South Iceland, and in West and East Jkuls, in Skagafjrdur,
among others. The Jkuls rivers are rated most difficult and are
therefore popular among thrill-seekers.
Glacial tours
The Icelandic glaciers are among the greatest natural wonders of
the world. As global warming is having an effect, causing the glaciers
to retreat more and more every year, no visitor should let a glacier
experience slip through their hands when travelling to Iceland.
The Icelandic glaciers are unique because of their easy accessibility.
However, visitors should be warned NOT to enter a glacier without
having an experienced mountain guide leading the way with the proper
equipment.
One of the best ways to experience the wonders of the glaciers
is by going on a guided glacier walk. The glacier walks are a safe
but fun activity that is offered in various lengths all year long from
Slheimajkull glacier and Skaftafell in Vatnajkull National Park. With
the variety of glacier walks, it is safe to say that they are accessible for
everyone, the whole family, individuals and groups. For this simple
reason glacier walks have become one of the most popular tourism
activities in Iceland.
Iceland Its all here for you. From aerial tours and scuba diving to
jeep safaris, rafting and kayaking, Iceland offers the outdoor enthusiast
unlimited adventures. When it comes to this magical country, the only
limit to your adventure is your imagination.
