Text and level: Birds of all Kinds Level 20

Text introduction: Today we are going to be reading a new book. This book is about the different types of birds. We arent going to be reading the whole book today though, only a few parts. We will be reading about the different kinds of birds, the parts of their bodies including their feathers, how they can fly, and what they eat. Lets look through the book to pick up on some of the features in the text. Prior knowledge:

Do you see birds in your backyard or when youre walking outside? What birds do you see? Lets look at page 4 at

the different kinds of birds. Which birds have you seen? Ive seen a cardinal, a goose, and a bald eagle. But we probably wont see a penguin in real life will we? Unless we go to Antarctica. Book walk:

While finding tricky words, Ebony should write them on a sticky note and put them under the clarify box on the Fab Four chart. Page 4. On this page there is a bolded word. Can you find that word? Its perch. Birds perch, or sit, in trees. Do we need to write that on a sticky note? Page 5. On this page it says that penguins cannot fly. Did you know that? Were going to watch a video that explains why they cannot fly. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c BZJvr6zjHc Page 6/7. There are a lot of bolded words on this page! Lets read through them all. This page is about the birds bodies. Page 8/9. What are these pages going to be about? Right, the different feathers. Whats the bird at the bottom of the page with the pretty feathers? Right, a peacock. There is one bolded word on this page and its kind of tricky. Its down. This isnt the same meaning as the direction, but a type of feather. Page 10/11. These pages explain how a bird is able to fly. They have hollow bones. How is that different from

She had already seen a bald eagle, ostrich at the zoo, and a cardinal.

us? Do you think thats why we cant fly? Page 12/13. The final thing we are going to read about, if we have time, is what birds eat. Remember the crayfish are omnivores? Some birds are omnivores and some are herbivores. Now that we have found the tricky words and clarified them we are ready to read.

Predict:

Before we read, we are going to make a prediction. Lets look at the fab four door to remind us how to predict. I think I will learn. Because. Record students prediction.

Set a purpose for reading:

While you read remember your prediction and if you were right or you learn something different. Lets also record any questions you have about the text while youre reading it. If you think something is interesting make sure to point it out to me and we can write it down. Finally, if you come to a hard word and you need to clarify it, or define it, I can help you do that and we can write it on our Fab Four chart.
