Lander University Lesson Plan Teacher Candidate: Morgan Chambers Subject/Grade: Math/2nd Lesson # __3__ Date and Time

of Lesson: March 24, 2014 10:30

Learning Objective: The students will be able to write and tell time using both digital and analog clocks. They will be able to match time given on a digital clock to the correct time on an analog clock. Alignment with Standards: Common Core 2.MD.C.7 Measurement & Data 7. Tell and write time from analog and digital clocks to the nearest five minutes, using a.m. and p.m. Developmental Appropriateness or Cross-curricular connections: Cognitive- Prior knowledge needed for this lesson includes the ability to: know the difference between the minute and hour hand on an analog clock, know the meaning of half past, a quarter past and a quarter till, and be able to tell time on both a digital and analog clock. Physical- The students will be moving around the classroom towards the end of the lesson while they are participating in the matching puzzle clock game. Social- Students will be interacting throughout the lesson. Most of the social interaction will take place during the matching puzzle clock activity where the students will be finding the student who has the puzzle piece that matches their clock. Emotional- All students will be actively involved throughout the lesson. Assessment(s) of the Objectives: Lesson Objective Assessment of the Objective Use of Formative Assessment The data received from the assessment will be used to further guide instruction. Any areas of concern will be reviewed again.

Students will be able to write and tell time using both digital and analog clocks with at least 80% accuracy (C.C. 2.MD.C.7)

At the beginning of the lesson, as a class, the students will show different times on their individual clocks. To go along with this, students will then complete a time worksheet working on half past and quarter times. To end the lesson, students will participate in a matching activity where they will match the time on an analog clock to the correct time on a digital clock.

Accommodations: Students who finish early will be allowed use this time for silent reading. Students who may be working at a slower pace will have the option of having an early finisher help them if they so choose. For a student who may be struggling with the lesson, I will allow them to work with their neighbor for help if they need to. The students will also be able to use their individual clocks to help them with their worksheets if they desire.

Materials: Pencils Erasers Clock worksheet Individual student clocks (24) Matching puzzle clock game Procedures: Motivation techniques- To gain the interest of the students I will start the lesson off with a hands-on activity where each student will be able to work with either on individual clocks. I will also let the students know they will be participating in a matching puzzle activity at the end of the lesson, but they have to finish their clock worksheets first. Instructional strategies1. Each student will be given their own individual clock, and they will show certain times on the clock as I ask them. 2. Once we they have been able to show multiple times correctly, each student will complete a worksheet on time. 3. After the students have completed their worksheets, we will go over and check their answers. If there are any problems that the students are having difficulty with, we will redo them as a class. 4. Once this has been completed, the students will play a matching clock game. In this game the student with the analog clock puzzle piece will have to find the student with the digital clock puzzle piece that matches to their piece. Probing questions- How many minutes is half past? How many minutes is a quarter till? How many minutes is a quarter past? When counting the numbers on a clock, what do you count by?

Activity Analysis: Activity 1- Each student will be given their own clock and they will use the clock to show certain times as they are asked. This activity supports the lesson objective because it allows the students to manually show time on a clock and allows the students to be hands-on with telling time. This activity stems from the students need for hands-on manipulatives and be able to see and feel first-hand how a clock works. There will not any use of technology in this lesson, due to the hands-on activity. Instead of using the promethean board as a whole class, students will work individually with their own manipulatives. Activity 2- Each student will complete a time worksheet on telling and writing time with analog clocks. This activity supports the lesson objective because the students will be telling and writing time with an analog clock and then the students write the time, they will write it in digital clock format. This activity stems from the students need for practice on writing and telling time. It also stems from the students interest, because there are many students in the class how really enjoy math. During this activity, there will be no technology used because the students will be completing this worksheet on their own at their desk. Activity 3- After going over the students worksheets, the students will play a matching puzzle clock game. In this activity the student with the analog clock piece will find the student who has the matching time on their digital clock piece. This activity stems from the lesson objective because the students will be telling time on both an analog and a digital clock. This activity stems from the students need for hands-on activities, as well as the need for incorporating movement into the lesson. There will not be any technology used in this activity either, because the students will be using the clock puzzle pieces as they move around the classroom to find their match, so technology is not needed.

Lander University Lesson Plan References: The worksheets used in this lesson were provided by Mrs. Cobb and the matching puzzle clock game was borrowed from the curriculum lab of the education department.
