Read the following passage and use the information to answer the questions.

Geography has played a key role in US history. Physical features, such as mountain ranges, rivers, water supplies, and so
forth, have greatly impacted where people migrated and settled throughout the centuries. Initially, most European
colonists settled along the Atlantic coast. As more settlers arrived and land became scarce, European colonists began
moving west. At first natural barriers like forests and the Appalachian mountains presented challenges that kept most
settlers living in eastern North America. During colonial times, the thick forests and high elevations of the Appalachians
proved too difficult for most settlers to overcome. However, the white settlers and businessmen, wanted the land, natural
resources, and freedom that awaited them beyond the Appalachians. Daniel Boone was hired to forge a route through the
Appalachian Mountains to what eventually became Kentucky.

The Ohio River and its surrounding territories make up the Ohio River Valley. Few regions have played a more important
role in US history. Long before any Europeans arrived, Native American peoples inhabited the area for generations.
Following colonization, both French and British settlers desired the territory because of the rich land and resources it
offered. Tensions between the two nations grew after King George II of Great Britain authorized more British settlement in
1749. Hoping to gain an upper hand, both sides worked to form alliances with Native Americans in the region. Eventually,
France and Great Britain went to war. The French and Indian War raged from 1754 until 1763. It was part of a world-wide
conflict fought between Great Britain and France. Eventually, the British won and gained control over the Ohio River
Valley. . After the war, tensions between British colonists and Native American grew. King George III issued the
Proclamation of 1763 in which outlawed settlement and placed the region under the control of his army. The king wanted
time to improve relations with Native Americans who did not trust white settlers. British colonist, however, resented the
king, and many ignored his proclamation.

FACTS:
Following the American Revolution, Congress passed the Northwest Ordinance in 1787. The law
divided the land north of the Ohio River (known as the Northwest Territory) into smaller areas
and provided guidelines by which they could one day become states. In the 1700, many white
landowners had slaves. Slavery was a system in which blacks in the US were owned like
property. The Northwest Ordinance made slavery illegal north of the Ohio River (slave owners
living in the territory prior to the law, however, did not have to give up their slaves). While this
encouraged many free blacks to move into the territory, it also concerned white settlers who
did not want to compete with African Americans for land and work. As a result, white
authorities passed a number of laws making it difficult for blacks to move in, such as making
them pay money if they did not own land.

The Mason-Dixon Line served as the boundary between the slaveholding South and the North,
where slavery was illegal. The Ohio River Valley became a hotbed of conflict as blacks fled
slavery in the southern portions of the Ohio River Valley for freedom across the river. Both
before and during the Civil War, the Ohio River Valley played a major role in the Underground
RR. The Underground RR was not really a RR, but rather a series of secret stops along a
pathway taken by escaped slaves as they headed north. More slaves fled the south through the
Ohio River Valley than through any other are of the country.

Perhaps no river has been more important in US history than the Mississippi River. The Mississippi runs south from
Minnesota to the Gulf of Mexico. Traditionally, people view the Mississippi as a natural dividing line between the
eastern and western US. For centuries, the river has played an important role in travel and trade because it allows ships
to sail back and forth between the Gulf of Mexico and the interior of central North America President Thomas Jefferson
recognized the importance of controlling access to the Mississippi River. He bought New Orleans, the port city at the
mouth of the Mississippi, and a vast amount of territory west of the Mississippi River from France in 1803. The deal
became known as the Louisiana Purchase and made New Orleans an important US city. When the United States went to
war with Great Britain in 1812, it understood the need to defend New Orleans. Whoever controlled the city controlled
the Mississippi. At the Battle of New Orleans in 1815, General Andrew Jackson won a key US victory. The US forces
suffered only 8 deaths while the British suffered over 700. Although a treaty had actually been signed ending the war
prior to the battle, the victory gave people in the US great pride and made Andrew Jackson a national hero.

The Lewis and Clark Expedition played a major role in opening up the Rockies and the regions beyond the western
settlement. President Thomas Jefferson commissioned Meriwether Lewis to find a water route to the Pacific Ocean.
Lewis chose William Clark to help him. Their expedition set out from St. Louis, Missouri, in 1804. It followed the
Missouri, Yellowstone, and Columbus Rivers west, crossing the Rocky Mountains in Modern day Montana and Idaho.
Lewis and Clark conducted the first scientific study of the mountains. They collected plant specimens, studied wildlife,
and gathered samples of rocks and soil. The publicity they received and their tales of adventure made US citizens aware
of the abundant land and resources in the Oregon Territory (region of North America that covered what is today the
northwest US). Lewis and Clarks route west became known as the Oregon Trail.
