Abstract

In this work we study a macroscopic traffic flow model known as Lighthill, Whitham and
Richards (LWR) model using a closure nonlinear density-velocity relationship which
yields a quasi-linear first order (hyperbolic) partial differential equation. We present the
derivation of the macroscopic traffic model and the analytic solution of the model by the
method of characteristics. We report the existence and uniqueness results of the
model. We also study the finite difference scheme as a numerical method for the
solution of the quasi-linear first order partial differential equation and study the stability
and error analysis of the numerical scheme. We discretize the traffic model by finite
difference method which leads to formulate a first order explicit upwind difference
scheme for the traffic flow model. We present the stability and well-posed-ness of the
traffic flow model. We project the traffic flow of a highway based on the explicit upwind
difference scheme for the traffic flow model, where the velocity and flux is modeled as a
nonlinear function of density. We perform numerical experiments by implementing the
numerical scheme and verify some qualitative behavior of the traffic flow for various
parameters.
