State Policy Analysis A. What are the goals of the legislative bill? What does it hope to achieve?

The goal of house bill 826 is to allow local school systems the ability to deal with violations of school safety zones with their discretion. Under this bill schools will no longer be required to expel students who have a fishing nife or baseball bat in their cars on school campuses. The current consequence for carrying these weapons would be automatic suspension along with a felony charge. Allowing the school system to deal with these scenarios on a case by case basis will eliminate a students record and or image from being tainted from an offense that was an innocent misunderstanding. Creating an opportunity for children to avoid undeserved punishment. B. What specific services or benefits will come from the proposed solution? e.g.! new"amended programs! e#tended access to services for marginali$ed groups! new monetary benefits! including ta# credits% are proposed to address the defined problem? The benefit of the proposed solution is that student with innocent and honest intentions will not be harshly disciplined. This will allow students a second chance without having a criminal record or missing days of school due to suspension. !arents will be relieved that their child has been given a fair chance at the future. "chool officials will also be able to learn what students pose a potential threat. #ith everyone wor ing together it will create a better alliance between to students$ school officials$ and parents. C. Who is eligible to receive benefits"services? What groups will be e#cluded from receiving services"benefits! and why?
