Introduction
In haiku the main idea, or topic, of the poem is usually about something in nature. Haiku does not have
to rhyme. It contains 3 lines with 17 syllables. The rst line has 5 syllables, the second line has 7 syllables,
and the third line has 5 syllables.
Instructions
1. Divide each line in the haiku below into syllables. Write the number of syllables.

in nature. Haiku does not rhyme. It contains 3 lines made up of 17 syllables written in a 5-7-5 syllable
pattern.
1. Brainstorm vivid nouns, verbs, adjectives, and adverbs to describe clouds.
2. Write a haiku using the words above. Remember, each line must have the correct number of syllables.

1. Brainstorm a list of four to seven topics. Write them in the space below. Circle the one you want to use
for a haiku poem.
2. Brainstorm as many words or phrases as you can think of that tell about your topic. Use a thesaurus if necessary.
3. On a separate sheet of paper or the back of this worksheet, write a haiku. Choose words or phrases that
describe your topic and t the haiku syllable pattern (5-7-5). Have a partner read your haiku and name
the topic.
