Baptism in the Name of Jesus

This article is to educate (apologetics) those who are baptized into the name of Jesus. It's from the book entitled alling on the Name of Jesus. This material is not cop!righted and permission is gi"en freel! b! the author (Jason #. $eatherl!) for all to use.

I was baptized %in the name of Jesus hrist for the remission of sins% on &ebruar! '( )**). That is trul! a da! that I will ne"er forget+ ,ince that time baptism in the name of Jesus has been a "er! important sub-ect for me to stud! and teach. ."er the last twent! In fact( in the past !ear I ha"e taken the labor of m! stud! and compiled it into a book entitled alling on the Name of Jesus.

1! book( alling on the Name of Jesus( deals specificall! with the teaching of orall! in"oking the Name of Jesus during baptism. It has been understood for o"er )*00 !ears( b! both Trinitarians and .neness belie"ers( that the phrase %baptized in the name of% refers to an oral in"ocation of the Name o"er the person baptized.

It was not until the )*20s with preacher name 3. 4. $allace from the church of hrist denomination that an!one taught a %no5formula% doctrine for baptism. Those who argue strongl! for a background of rabbinical usage o"erlook the fact that eis to onoma is not found in the #JJ "ersion of the .ld Testament. Therefore( it could be argued that 8abbinical (Talmudic) usage was influenced b! the common commercial language of 9ellenistic (3reek5speaking) Jews. The fact that the ma-orit! of the New Testament was either written b! a 3entile (#uke) or was written to predominatel! 3entile congregations( would suggest that eis to onoma should be understood with a 9ellenistic (3reek) commercial background. The 3entile con"erts would not ha"e been familiar with the 8abbinical (Talmudic) usage of eis to onoma. 9owe"er( it is apparent from 6cts and the Hpistles that eis to onoma was a phrase that would ha"e been common to the intended readers.
